Maternal chemosensory cues are an important component of the ewe-lamb bond, yet behavioral responses to these cues and their neural correlates from the offspring's perspective remain poorly characterized. We hypothesized that own-mother odor selectively promotes filial searching behavior during maternal separation, whereas exposure to the own mother increases neuronal activity within the main olfactory bulb (MOB) in suckling lambs. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the frequency of contact allergy to lanolin (wool alcohols) in a central London teaching hospital patch-test population.

Fleece-rot was experimentally induced in-vitro by wetting and incubating Merino wool samples embedded in serum-agar. Common ingredients of vehicles such as perfumes, antibacterial agents, emulsifiers and other surface active agents, propylene glycol, lanolin and wool alcohols were tested in eczema patients over a three-year period. Perfume allergy was detected in 3.6% of the cases, sensitivity to thiomersal in 2%, to sorbic acid in 0.8%, to parabens in only 0.3%, and to wool alcohols in 1.2%. Addressing increased demand for sheep meat globally is dependent on reproductive efficiency (lambs weaned per 100 breeding ewes).
