Cyclic dipeptides from rhabditid entomopathogenic nematode-associated Bacillus cereus have antimicrobial activities.

The cell free culture filtrate of Bacillus cereus associated with an entomopathogenic nematode, Rhabditis (Oscheius) sp. exhibited strong antimicrobial activity. The ethyl acetate extract of the bacterial culture filtrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain four bioactive compounds. The structure and absolute stereochemistry of these compounds were determined based on extensive spectroscopic analyses (FABMS, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, (1)H-(1)H COSY, (1)H-(13)C HMBC) and Marfey's method. The compounds were identified as cyclic dipeptides (CDPs): cyclo(L-Pro-L-Trp), cyclo(L-Leu

Broad-spectrum microbicidal activity, toxicologic assessment, and materials compatibility of a new generation of accelerated hydrogen peroxide-based environmental surface disinfectant.

BACKGROUND: Concerns on human and environmental safety and label claims of many microbicides point to the need for safer, faster acting, and broad-spectrum substitutes. ACCEL TB, a 0.5% accelerated H(2)O(2) (AHP)-based disinfectant described here, is a potential candidate. METHODS: ACCEL TB was tested for its broad-spectrum microbicidal activity, safety and materials compatibility using internationally accepted protocols. Activity against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, methicillin-

Suppression of cellular immune activity following severe head injury.

Infection is a major cause of morbidity following multiple traumatic and head injury. Although immunosuppression has been demonstrated after multiple traumatic injury, the effects of head injury on immune function have not been thoroughly investigated. In a prospective study of 10 severely head-injured patients, in vitro and in vivo parameters of cellular immune activity were assessed. In vitro measurements of lymphocyte surface antigen expression following mitogen stimulation were made serially over a 3-week period in 10 patients with severe head injury. The control group consisted of 20 heal

[Chemotherapeutic effects of nitro compounds. 1. Nitroanilines].

More than 200 nitro compounds, most of them nitroaniline derivatives substituted with one or more radicals having a basic reaction, were prepared and investigated as to their therapeutic activity against bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths, viruses and tumors. Several mono-nitrobenzenes with a radical having a basic reaction showed weak in-vitro activity against gram-positive bacteria and against Crocker's sarcoma 180; they also showed systemic activity against nematodes (Aspiculuris tetraptera) and viruses. The majority of therapeutically active compounds with pronounced in-vivo activity aga

Tinea unguium in the north-west of Iran (1996-2004).

Tinea unguium is a common mycosis in many part of the world including Iran. The prevalence of this mycosis varied depending on time, health level and geographical location. To stabilise the etiological, epidemiological and risk factors of tinea unguium in North-west Iran, a study of patients with suspected dermatophyte infections of their nails was carried out between 1996 and 2004. During this study 590 (354 females and 236 males) patients with clinical presentation of fungal infection in fingernails, toenails or in the both sites, were investigated using direct microscopy and culture of clin

KP-103, a novel triazole derivative, is effective in preventing relapse and successfully treating experimental interdigital tinea pedis and tinea corporis in guinea pigs.

The therapeutic efficacy of KP-103, a triazole derivative, for 10 guinea pigs with interdigital tinea pedis or tinea corporis was investigated. Topical KP-103 solution (0.25 to 1%) was dose-dependently effective in treating both dermatophytoses. A 1% KP-103-treatment rendered all infected skins culture-negative on day-2 posttreatment. A high negative-culture rate was obtained with 1% solutions of butenafine and lanoconazole but not with 1% neticonazole solution. The follow up study performed on day-30 and day-9 posttreatment demonstrated that the relapse rates for 1% KP-103-treated animals wit

Immunodeficiency in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Seventy-one previously untreated patients with non-Hodgkin lymphomas were studied with several readilyvailable tests of immune function: number of peripheral blood lymphocytes, serum immunoglobulins, and delayed hypersensitivity to six recall antigens. The results were correlated to histology (Rappaport classification), stage (Ann Arbor classification), the presence of symptoms, and survival. As a group, 38 patients with diffuse lymphomas exhibited marked impairment in reactivity to five of six antigens (p less than 0.03 to p less than 0.001). In addition, lymphopenia and reduced levels of ser

Naftifine: A Topical Allylamine for Superficial Dermatophytosis.

Dermatophytosis is a very common public health problem with high prevalence. Dermatophytes are a highly specialized set of filamentous fungi, which are adapted to keratinized tissues of humans and animals. Dermatophytosis is the most common fungal infection worldwide, affecting approximately 20-25% of the world's population. The etiological agents of dermatophytosis, called dermatophytes, change with geography and socioeconomic status. Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) is the prime species for skin and nail infections followed by T. mentagrophytes/ T. interdigital complex. There is a shift from

Antimicrobial activity of Butyl acetate, Ethyl acetate and Isopropyl alcohol on undesirable microorganisms in cosmetic products.

OBJECTIVE: The microbiological contamination risk of a cosmetic product has to be assessed by the manufacturer, according to the composition, to determine whether microbiological testing is required. Certain ingredients in cosmetic formulations help to create an environment hostile towards microbial growth. In this study, the influence on microbial survival of some solvents used in nail varnishes was evaluated. The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was to define the thresholds to be considered for the exemption of products from microbiological testing. The second was to assess the

Phytochemical Investigation and Biological Activities of Desmodium heterocarpon Extract as Anti-Tyrosinase: Isolation of Natural Compounds, In Vitro and In Silico Study.

Tyrosinase is an important enzyme in the biosynthesis of melanin. Many skin-whitening agents that inhibit tyrosinase activity from natural sources have been identified because they are harmless and non-toxic. In this work, 114 samples of 54 Fabaceae plants were assessed for their anti-tyrosinase activity using a dopachrome method. The results found that Desmodium heterocarpon stems and roots demonstrated the highest tyrosinase inhibitory activity at 20 µg/mL (92.50 ± 1.09%), whereas the water extract of Artocarpus lacucha and kojic acid demonstrated 87.41 ± 0.61% and 95.71 ± 0.33%, respectivel

Extended Use of Topical Efinaconazole Remains Safe and Can Provide Continuing Benefits for Dermatophyte Toenail Onychomycosis.

INTRODUCTION: Efinaconazole 10% topical solution labeling for onychomycosis describes phase III trials of 12 months of treatment; the slow growth of onychomycotic nails suggests a longer treatment period may increase efficacy. We present here the first evaluation of extended use of efinaconazole 10% topical solution for up to 24 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enrolled patients (n = 101) had one target great toenail with mild to moderate distal lateral subungual onychomycosis and applied efinaconazole 10% topical solution to all affected toenails once daily for 18 months (EFN18) or 24 months (
