INTRODUCTION: Recurrent aphthous ulcers are common lesions of the oral mucosa of which the etiology is unknown. This study aimed to estimate the bacterial diversity in the lesions and in control mucosa in pooled samples using a culture-independent molecular approach.
METHODS: Samples were collected from ten healthy individuals and ten individuals with a clinical history of recurrent aphthous ulcers. After DNA extraction, the 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction with universal primers; amplicons were cloned, sequenced and matched to the GenBank database.

Oral ulcerations associated with HIV infection include recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU). Whereas RAU prevalence is not increased, lesion severity is: among a group of HIV+ patients, 66% had the more severe herpetiform or major RAU. This increased severity suggests that HIV disease-related changes in the immune system may exacerbate RAU. In the peripheral blood of healthy subjects with RAU, CD4:CD8 cell ratios may be reversed and the proportion of T cell receptor-gamma delta + cells increased. HIV disease-related immune system changes are characterized by reversed CD4:CD8, lowered CD4 cell count

Leukocyte functions were investigated in patients with oral candidiasis (OC), recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) and oral lichen planus (OLP). Blastogenesis and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) activity were decreased in RAU and OLP compared with healthy controls, and lymphocytes from patients with OC exhibited the lowest blastogenesis and LAK activity. Neutrophil superoxide (O2-) generation showed the following relationship: healthy controls > RAU congruent to OLP > OC patients. No great differences in phagocytosis or natural killer (NK) activity were observed among patients and healthy control

OBJECTIVE: It was hypothesized that serum levels of immunoglobulins may play a role in the pathogenesis of oral mucosal diseases, or reflect clinical changes in these conditions, but little is known about the role of salivary immunoglobulins in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate possible alterations in salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG subclasses in patients with oral mucosal inflammatory diseases.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Levels of IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4 were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and IgA1 and IgA2 by radial i

Adhesion molecules are known to play a crucial role in the recruitment of inflammatory cells to sites of inflammation. In this study endothelial cell and keratinocyte adhesion molecule expression in recurrent oral ulcers (ROU) (n = 13) was compared with that found in normal oral mucosa (NOM) (n = 11) and experimentally induced ulcers (EIU) (n = 5) by using immunohistochemistry. Significantly greater expression of both vascular cell adhesion molecule- (VCAM-1) and E-selectin was demonstrated on vasculature in ROU compared with that found in both NOM and EIU. Induction of keratinocyte intercellu

The factor XIIIa-positive (FXIIIa+) cell is a potent antigen-presenting cell, which has been described as increasing in numbers in various chronic inflammatory conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution and frequency of FXIIIa+ cells in acute recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) lesions compared with induced traumatic ulcer (TU) lesions and with clinically healthy oral mucosa. Samples were labeled with polyclonal rabbit anti-human FXIIIa antibodies in avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) staining. Most of the FXIIIa-immunoreactive cells in TUs and normal mucosa were

The etiology of the most common intraoral mucosal disease, recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU), remains obscure. Here, attempts were made to diagnose reactivation of varicella zoster (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr (EBV) and human hepes virus 6 (HHV-6) infections from paired sera in association with RAU recurrences. The first sample was obtained within 3 days after a new recurrence (1) and the second 10-14 days later (2). The study initially comprised 18 otherwise healthy RAU patients (gr A) and 17 sex- and age-matched healthy non-RAU individuals. Values of specific antibody subclas

When activated under physiologic or pathologic conditions leukocytes adhere to one another or to other cell types. Adhesion receptors mediate these interactions. In the study reported here, the distribution of the adhesion receptors LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18), ICAM-1 (CD54), CD2 and LFA-3 (CD58) in recurrent oral ulcers (ROU) were studied. Nine tissue specimens from five female patients (mean age 33 yr, age range 21-40 yr) with ROU were studied using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method. The main mononuclear cell infiltrations were in lamina propria (LP) and the epithelium next to the bas

Infection with Herpesvirus hominis, often associated with oral ulceration, was found to be more frequent in patients with myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders than in normal populations or patients with other diseases. This increased frequency was not associated with any deficiency of the humoral antibody response, suggesting a possible impairment of cell-mediated immunity. The otherwise untreatable oral lesions appeared to respond effectively to local irradiation.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of oral lesions related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have been investigated after treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) including protease inhibitors (PI) but no data are available on the effect of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)-based therapy on incidence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) oral manifestations or impact of HAART on oral manifestations of HIV infection in Brazil. The aim of this study was to describe the effects of anti-HIV therapy on the incidence of oral lesions during 17 years
