Nonoperative treatment of adult acquired flat foot with the Arizona brace.

Nonoperative treatment of posterior tibial tendon dysfunction can be successful with the Arizona AFO brace, particularly when treatment is initiated in the early stages of the disease. This mandates that the orthopedist has a high index of suspicion when evaluating patients to make an accurate diagnosis. Although there is a role for surgical management of acquired flat feet, a well-fitted, custom-molded leather and polypropylene orthosis can be effective at relieving symptoms and either obviating or delaying any surgical intervention. In today's climate of patient satisfaction directed health

Flat and cavus foot, indexes of obesity and overweight in a population of primary-school children.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and overweight during the developmental years are related to certain dysmorphisms of the foot, in particular with flat foot. METHODS: The authors evaluated the incidence of this dysmorphism in a population of 243 primary-school pupils, (3rd and 4th class - age range 8-10 years) of ULSS no. 16 in Padua and, at the same time, determined the index of overweight and obesity and the extent and quality of exercise practised. From the anthropometric data collected, it was calculated that the Cole index (ideal ratio between the ideal BMI at the 50 degrees percentile of weight and

Association of Musculoskeletal Pain With Foot Type, Plantar Pressure, Physical Activity, Psychosocial Factors, and Daily Living Habits Among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, musculoskeletal pain (MSP) has gained widespread attention globally and has become a significant public health issue affecting people of all ages, especially those affected by adolescence. Many musculoskeletal problems have a biomechanical origin, often linked to foot type and plantar pressure. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to provide new insights into the multifactorial nature of MSP by exploring its associations with foot type, plantar pressure, physical activity, psychosocial factors, and daily living habits in adolescents. DESIGN: A cross-sectional obs

Effects of kinesio tape on countermovement jump kinetic variables in physically active females with flat feet before and after fatigue: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Flatfoot, characterized by a reduced medial longitudinal arch, alters lower-limb biomechanics and affects vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during dynamic tasks like jumping. Kinesio taping (KT) is often used to support foot posture; however, its efficacy under high-load conditions-such as jumping, which increases arch stress, and fatigue, which reduces muscular support-remains unclear. METHODS: This double-blind randomized controlled trial included 46 physically active females with flexible flat feet (arch height ratio < 0.221), assigned to KT or sham groups. Participants per

Incidence and Factors Associated With Nonunion following Naviculocuneiform Joint Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Nonunion following naviculocuneiform (NC) joint arthrodesis is a well-recognized complication. Most studies reporting nonunion rates involve a limited number of cases or focus on a single disease entity. Moreover, there is variation between studies with regard to the number of articular facets included in the arthrodesis as well as the fixation construct used, with no clear evidence indicating how these factors influence union. This study, using the largest cohort to date, aims to investigate the nonunion rate following NC joint arthrodesis and to identify demographic and surgical

Biomechanical Comparison of External Fixation and Compression Screws for Transverse Tarsal Joint Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Transverse tarsal joint arthrodesis is commonly performed in the operative treatment of hindfoot arthritis and acquired flatfoot deformity. While fixation is typically achieved using screws, failure to obtain and maintain joint compression sometimes occurs, potentially leading to nonunion. External fixation is an alternate method of achieving arthrodesis site compression and has the advantage of allowing postoperative compression adjustment when necessary. However, its performance relative to standard screw fixation has not been quantified in this application. We hypothesized that

Talar-tarsal Stabilisation: Goals and Initial Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While surgical stabilisation of the subtalar joint (arthroeresis) in children remains controversial in the USA, it is widely practised worldwide, with reportedly good outcomes. We are presenting a series of patients who met our criteria for calcaneal lengthening, but whose parents chose the less invasive option of talo-tarsal stabilisation (TTS). The goal of this surgery was to forestall or prevent hindfoot osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With IRB approval, we conducted this retrospective review of 32 patients (60 ft), who underwent TTS for flexible planovalgus deformity and had

The salvage of complex hindfoot problems with use of a custom talar total ankle prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: There has been recent interest in the use of a custom long-stemmed talar component for salvage of failed total ankle replacement or for management of combined ankle and hindfoot pathology. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review prospective data on patients who underwent total ankle arthroplasty with a custom long-stemmed talar prosthesis. METHODS: From November 2004 to February 2006, thirty-three custom total ankle arthroplasties were performed in thirty-two patients. The indication for this prosthesis was stage-IV adult-acquired flatfoot deformity in six patients

Suture anchor stabilization of symptomatic accessory navicular in adolescents: Clinical and radiographic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Screw fixation used in modified Kidner procedures to treat persistent symptomatic accessory navicular in adult cases is often challenging in adolescent cases with a small accessory fragment. The present study aimed to document the clinical effect of a suture anchor stabilization technique applicable to such cases where osteosynthesis is considered an ideal outcome. METHODS: Consecutive clinical cases who received this surgical treatment from 2009 to 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. The focus of interest included radiographic union of the accessory bone, changes in symptoms eval

Comfort and Ground Reaction Forces in Flat-Footed Female Runners: Comparison of Low-Dye Taping versus Sham Taping.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-Dye tape on comfort and ground reaction forces (GRF) in flat-footed female runners. A randomized cross-over study was conducted on 15 flat-footed female recreational runners. Participants ran at three speeds (9, 10, 11 km/h) under two conditions: low-Dye and sham taping. Comfort level was assessed using a 150-mm visual analog scale. GRF data were collected using an instrumented treadmill. Stance time, peak forces, and loading rates were extracted. Low-Dye taping showed a lower comfort level (low-Dye, 63.8 (24.3) mm, sham 122.0 (16.0)

Medial Double Arthrodesis: Technique Guide and Tips.

The triple arthrodesis procedure remains the historical standard to treat complex hindfoot pathology. However, in recent data, the medial double arthrodesis has been documented to provide similar benefit with decreased complication rates compared with the triple arthrodesis. Therefore, increased interest in this procedure for the treatment of complex hindfoot pathologies has ensued. We describe the technical components of the medial double arthrodesis.

Kinematics and kinetics of normal and planovalgus feet during walking.

Planovalgus deformity is prevalent in cerebral palsy patients, but very few studies have quantitatively reported differences between planovalgus and normal foot function. Intersegmental foot kinetics have not been reported in this population. In this study, a three segment (hindfoot, forefoot, hallux) kinematic and kinetic model was applied to typically developing (n=10 subjects, 20 feet) and planovalgus (n=10 subjects, 18 feet) pediatric subjects by two clinicians for each subject. Intra-clinician and inter-clinician repeatability of kinematic variables have been previously reported. Variabil

Generation of subject-specific, dynamic, multisegment ankle and foot models to improve orthotic design: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Currently, custom foot and ankle orthosis prescription and design tend to be based on traditional techniques, which can result in devices which vary greatly between clinicians and repeat prescription. The use of computational models of the foot may give further insight in the biomechanical effects of these devices and allow a more standardised approach to be taken to their design, however due to the complexity of the foot the models must be highly detailed and dynamic. METHODS/DESIGN: Functional and anatomical datasets will be collected in a multicentre study from 10 healthy parti

Risk factors for foot blisters during road marching: tobacco use, ethnicity, foot type, previous illness, and other factors.

Three hundred thirty-nine freshmen participating in cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy completed a questionnaire that asked them about their previous military experience, gender, ethnicity, injuries and illness experienced in the last 12 months, foot type, cigarette smoking habits, smokeless tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and sleep habits. They then performed a 21-km road march in about 6.5 hours. Their feet were examined for blisters before and after the march. Univariate analysis showed that risk factors for foot blisters included ethnicity (blacks at lower risk than others
