A novel Foley catheter made of high-intensity near-infrared fluorescent silicone rubber for image-guided surgery of lower rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Urethral injury occurs in 1-6 % of male cases during minimally invasive surgery of lower rectal cancer. A Foley catheter emitting near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence of sufficient intensity has been expected to locate the urethra during image-guided surgery. Although it has been difficult to impart NIR fluorescent properties to biocompatible thermosetting polymers, we have recently succeeded in developing a NIR fluorescent compound for silicone rubber and a NIR fluorescent Foley catheter (HICARL). Here, we evaluated its NIR fluorescence properties and visibility performance using porc

Is headless screw a valid alternative for the fixation of Chevron olecranon osteotomy? A biomechanical comparison of 4 fixation methods.

BACKGROUND: Chevron osteotomy is a popular technique for repairing complex distal humerus intra-articular fractures. However, refixation presents challenges like hardware prominence and soft tissue damage. Headless cannulated screws are gaining popularity for fixation due to better bone purchase and less irritation. This study aims to compare different fixation strategies with headless screws for Chevron osteotomy fixation. METHODS: This study utilized 32 polyurethane foam ulna specimens for biomechanical testing. The Chevron osteotomy was performed with an oscillating saw for all specimens.

Fracture Gap Closure and Reduction Are Affected by the Orientation of the Headless Compression Screw.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the impact of a variable-pitch headless screw's angle of insertion relative to the fracture plane on fracture gap closure and reduction. METHODS: Variable-pitch, fully threaded headless screws were inserted into polyurethane blocks of "normal" bone model density using a custom jig. Separate trials were completed with a 28-mm screw placed perpendicular and oblique/longitudinal to varying fracture planes (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°). Fluoroscopic images were taken after each turn during screw insertion and analyzed. Initial screw push-off, residual fracture gap at optim

Patient-specific miniplates versus patient-specific reconstruction plate: A biomechanical comparison with 3D-printed plates in mandibular reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific 3D-printed miniplates for free flap fixation in mandibular reconstruction were recently associated with enhanced osseous union. Higher mechanical strains resulting from these plates are discussed as reasons, but biomechanical studies are missing. This study aims to examine, whether patient-specific 3D-printed miniplates provide an increased interosteotomy movement (IOM) and lower stiffness compared with reconstruction plates. METHODS: Polyurethane (PU) mandible and fibula models (Synbone AG, Malans, Schweiz) were used to simulate mandibular reconstruction with a o

Sodium butyrate attenuates peritoneal fibroproliferative process in mice.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Peritoneal injury can result in a persistent fibroproliferative process in the abdominal cavity, causing pain and loss of function of internal organs. This study aimed to demonstrate the use of sodium butyrate (NaBu) as a potential agent to attenuate peritoneal fibrosis induced by a synthetic matrix. What is the main finding and its importance? Our findings provide the first evidence that NaBu attenuates the inflammatory, angiogenesis and fibrogenesis axes involved in the formation of peritoneal fibrovascular tissue, indicating the pote

Use of Suture-Mediated Closure Devices for Closure of Punctures in Prosthetic Patches or Grafts is Associated With High Rates of Technical Success and Low Complication Rates.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the increasing use of endovascular techniques in the management of peripheral vascular disease, there is little data on the safety of percutaneous closure devices in punctures of synthetic vascular material. Our paper sought to address this paucity in the literature by reviewing the incidence of complications occurring in patients in whom the ProGlide device was utilised to achieve haemostasis post-percutaneous puncture of vascular patches and graft materials. METHODS: A retrospective review of patient records was conducted at a tertiary referral centre. Patients who had u

Evaluation of Implant Stability and Trephination Depth for Implant Removal-An In Vitro Study.

Malpositioned and broken implants are usually fully osseointegrated; hence, their removal, especially from the lower arch, can be very challenging. Implant removal techniques include reverse torque and trephination. Trephination is an invasive technique that can jeopardize vital structures, cause mandibular fatigue fractures, or lead to osteomyelitis. In this study, we aimed to assess the relationship between trephination depth and implant stability by recording implant stability quotient (ISQ) readings at varying trephination depths in vitro. Materials and methods: Forty-eight implants were i

Central fixation element type and length affect glenoid baseplate micromotion in reverse shoulder arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is commonly used to treat patients with rotator cuff tear arthropathy. Loosening of the glenoid component remains one of the principal modes of failure and represents a significant complication that requires revision surgery. This study assessed the effects of various factors on glenoid baseplate micromotion for primary fixation of RSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A half-fractional factorial design of experiment was used to assess 4 factors: central element type (central peg or screw), central cortical engagement according to length (13.5 or 23.5 mm)

Surface-Catalyzed Nitric Oxide Release via a Metal Organic Framework Enhances Antibacterial Surface Effects.

It has been previously demonstrated that metal nanoparticles embedded into polymeric materials doped with nitric oxide (NO) donor compounds can accelerate the release rate of NO for therapeutic applications. Despite the advantages of elevated NO surface flux for eradicating opportunistic bacteria in the initial hours of application, metal nanoparticles can often trigger a secondary biocidal effect through leaching that can lead to unfavorable cytotoxic responses from host cells. Alternatively, copper-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been shown to stabilize Cu2+/1+ via coordination wh

Tutorial: Triheptanoin and Nutrition Management for Treatment of Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAODs) experience serious morbidity and mortality despite traditional dietary management including medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)-supplemented, low-fat diets. Triheptanoin is a triglyceride oil that is broken down to acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) and propionyl-CoA, which replenishes deficient tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. We report the complex medical and nutrition management of triheptanoin therapy initiated emergently for 3 patients with LC-FAOD. METHODS: Triheptanoin (Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical, Inc, Novato,
