A countermeasure development pipeline.

We have developed an integrated pipeline for countermeasure discovery that, under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats network, is one of the few efforts within academia that by design spans the spectrum from discovery to phase I. The successful implementation of this approach for cyanide would enable efficient proof-of-concept studies that would lay the foundation for a generalizable strategy for parallel mechanistic studies and accelerated countermeasure development in the face of new and emerging chemical threats.

Experience with Dog Sterilization Campaigns for Surveillance of Zoonotic Diseases in Ecuador: Building Bridges with Animal Organizations to Improve One Health Research.

The extensive population of free-roaming dogs poses significant public health risks in low- and middle-income countries because of their potential role in spreading infectious and zoonotic diseases. This article discusses the successful collaboration between academia and nonprofit animal welfare organizations in Ecuador to enhance One Health surveillance despite limited research resources. This collaborative model could serve as a valuable example for other countries in the Americas and globally, where community-based strategies may improve One Health policies.

Establishing a Multidisciplinary Framework to Study Drug-Drug Interactions of Hormonal Contraceptives: An Invitation to Collaborate.

Hormonal contraceptive agents (HCAs) are widely used throughout the world, and women taking HCAs are likely to take other medications. However, little is known about the clinical effect of most drug-drug interactions (DDIs) associated with HCAs. A team of interdisciplinary outcomes and pharmacometric researchers from academia and industry jointly engage in a research project to (i) quantitatively elucidate DDI impacts on unintended pregnancies and breakthrough bleeding, and (ii) establish a DDI-prediction framework to inform optimal use of HCAs.

Medication-assisted therapy for opioid-dependent incarcerated populations in New Mexico: statewide efforts to increase access.

An acute awareness of the profound social and medical costs associated with heroin and opiate addiction in New Mexico has led a group of advocates from public health, state and local governments, corrections, academia, and community activists to collaborate for the purpose of increasing access to medication-assisted therapy (MAT) with buprenorphine and methadone in New Mexico. This paper describes these collaborations, with a focus on the evolution of harm reduction approaches to substance abuse disorders and successful efforts to make MAT available to incarcerated persons.

Neurodiversity in the Minds of Students: From Perception to Campus Programming.

Neurodiversity is a social justice movement at the nexus of neuroscience, academia, and public policy. A contemporary view of neurodiversity is one that embraces neurological differences, encompassing all "neurotypes," including more specific identifiers like autistic or dyslexic. The goal of this study was to investigate student awareness and perception of neurodiversity since they are the next generation of public policy makers. Students enrolled in Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience (N=146) were exposed to different information sources (popular, academic, TED talk, or choose/find their

New developments in prosthetic arm systems.

Absence of an upper limb leads to severe impairments in everyday life, which can further influence the social and mental state. For these reasons, early developments in cosmetic and body-driven prostheses date some centuries ago, and they have been evolving ever since. Following the end of the Second World War, rapid developments in technology resulted in powered myoelectric hand prosthetics. In the years to come, these devices were common on the market, though they still suffered high user abandonment rates. The reasons for rejection were trifold - insufficient functionality of the hardware,

An Exploration of the Views of Teachers in a Dental College on the Current Performance Appraisal Framework and Promotion Policy.

Purpose The current description of performance appraisal and advancement in the academic setting in India is nebulous, leading to confusion and a lack of preparation for promotions. The current system of promotions was introduced a few decades ago to meet the demand of a rapidly growing dental education sector. There was a shortage of teachers and having a time-based eligibility for promotion ensured that these vacancies were rapidly filled. This study was conducted to investigate the perceptions of teachers in dental colleges in India regarding the performance appraisal framework. Methods The

Research sustainability: Lessons and opportunities for global biomedical research institutions.

Biomedical research and development (R&D) remains universally underinvested, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), despite LMIC investigators' significant scientific contributions. To address these challenges, various approaches aim to empower individuals and institutions to generate R&D within this ecosystem. However, limitations within these approaches persist, most notably their focus on individual capacity building and lack of a systems approach that adequately incorporates science management and operations. Considering the successes and gaps in the field, we propose resea

Bureaucratic Violence and Health Disparities Research: A Florida Case Study of Institutional Responses to Anti-DEI Politics in Higher Education.

In the second Trump administration, federal officials have pursued political priorities that conflict with public health goals, including revising vaccination and nutritional guidelines in ways that contradict established science and terminating federally funded research grants. At the state level, similar political challenges have emerged, such as efforts to suspend mandatory school-entry vaccination requirements. Less attention has been paid to how academic institutions within these contexts may also contribute to politically driven public health harms. This essay provides a case study of an

Political cost, value balance, and the optimization of university public health emergency governance: an evolutionary game and small signal analysis.

In major public-health emergencies, universities constitute core nodes within a multi-actor intersecting governance network composed of governments, universities, students, media and social-sector organizations. While uniform closed-campus management can maximize the protection of students' physical health, it frequently overlooks students' mental-health needs and value-recognition concerns, which may exacerbate tensions between universities and students. Taking political costs associated with university pandemic governance as the research subject, this study integrates systems theory and cost

Introducing the Values-Based Nurse Faculty Success Model.

BACKGROUND: Nurse faculty shortages and increased levels of reported burnout are negatively affecting the nursing workforce and impacting healthcare. Nurse faculty struggle to balance all aspects of their role, including scholarship/research, teaching, service, and practice, along with their personal values, which can contribute to feelings of burnout. PROBLEM: Traditional models for supporting nurse faculty professional development and evaluation fail to incorporate personal values and do not include practice as its own component of the faculty role. APPROACH: This article presents the quad

"When, why, and at what cost?" Towards a trauma-informed pedagogy for learning about family violence in nurse education.

Learning how to recognise and respond to disclosures of family violence is a core component of nurse education, yet this learning often occurs in classrooms and clinical environments where some students and educators may themselves be survivors. Across nursing programs, pedagogical approaches often emphasise recognising and responding to patients affected by family violence yet give limited attention to the vulnerabilities of students and academic faculty or the potential for re-traumatisation when the topic arises in educational settings. Using a trauma-informed lens, we examine the ethical d

Advancing clinical exercise physiology and integrative health policy in Tunisia: An international perspective on curriculum reform and professional recognition.

Sedentary and non-communicable diseases continue to rise in Tunisia. Yet, graduates from the country's four institutes of Sport Sciences face persistent barriers to employment and lack legal recognition within the healthcare system. Although these graduates receive academic learning and training in exercise physiology, biomechanics, adapted physical activity, and performance sciences, current legislation prevents them from prescribing exercise or working with clinical populations. Across worldwide, many countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada have established

Filling the fellowship gap: A structured program for pharmacy students.

BACKGROUND: Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate train

Use of a specific set of learner-centered evidence-based teaching practices correlates with higher exam performance across seven STEM departments.

Myriad studies support the claim that active learning improves student academic performance in STEM, yet lecture remains the dominant form of instruction. Many faculty offer multiple reasons for not using active learning with many expressing confusion as to what active learning is. In an effort to better understand how specific elements of active learning might contribute to enhanced academic performance, we used a more fine-grained classroom observation tool, PORTAAL, to observe teaching practices across 146 STEM courses. We used a principal component analysis to identify specific sets of tea
