With the incidence of Lyme disease increasing throughout the United States, reducing risk of exposure to the disease is of the utmost concern. In the northeastern U.S., the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the primary vector and the white-footed mouse, (Peromyscus leucopus), the primary reservoir for Borrelia burgdorteri, the bacterium causing Lyme disease. Targeting I. scapularis engorging on white-footed mice with an effective biological control agent, such as the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, could be an effective and relatively safe control technique. In 2002-2003, we performed lab

Larvae and/or nymphs of four species of ixodid ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, Amblyomma americanum (L.), Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, and Dermacentor variabilis Say, were fed to completion on laboratory hamsters or mice which had been inoculated with a West Nile (WN) virus isolate from Culex pipiens L. captured in Connecticut USA. Maximum titers in mice and hamsters were approximately 5 and two logs, respectively, lower than recorded (10 logs) in a naturally infected American crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos Brehm. WN virus was isolated in Vero cell culture from ticks and detected by TaqMan RT-poly

The male and female of Amblyomma geochelone n. sp. are described and illustrated by both scanning electron micrographs and line drawings. Specimens of this new tick species were recovered from the endangered ploughshare tortoise, Geochelone yniphora (Vaillant), in northwestern Madagascar. This relatively large tick is morphologically most similar to Amblyomma nuttalli Dönitz, which occurs in mainland sub-Saharan Africa where it mainly parasitizes other species of tortoises. However, several characters distinguish the new species from A. nuttalli including the scutal ornamentation in both sexes

The vertical transmission of Wolbachia in two species of spider mite was investigated and compared. One species, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida, was infected with a modification negative strain of Wolbachia while the other species, Panonychus mori Yokoyama, was infected with a modification positive strain. The infection showed perfect maternal transmission in the laboratory population of T. kanzawai in which Wolbachia-infected females produced infected offspring regardless of whether they mated with infected or uninfected males, and uninfected females produced Wolbachia-free progenies without re

Pinenes are bicyclic monoterpenes that contain two constitutional isomers, alpha- and beta-pinene. Both exhibit a wide range of biological activities, including fungicidal, insecticidal, antimicrobial and antibacterial effects, and are found in the essential oil of numerous plant species with acaricidal properties. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentrations of alpha- and beta-pinene, diluted in 2 % Tween 80, on the morphology of the ovary of semi-engorged Rhipicephalus microplus female ticks. For this, the ticks were immersed in different concen

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a broadly distributed tick-borne disease and is caused by the arthropod-borne Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Hyalomma ticks have been associated with the circulation of the virus in natural foci and in laboratory experiments. One of the main species, Hyalomma rufipes, is originally distributed in Africa. However, anthropogenic activities, bird migration, and domestic animal movement, could break the natural barriers that prevent its spread out of its natural area of colonization. This study explored the potential suitable areas for H. rufipes

Several species of ectoparasites, including chewing lice and mites are closely associated with their hosts. The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is globally listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and its population has been steadily declining in recent decades suggesting a potential extinction of associated entomofauna. The purpose of this study was to record the species of ectoparasites infesting three individuals of Andean condor found dead in the 'Páramo del Almorzadero' Santander Department, Northeastern Colombia. One juvenile (male) and two adults (male and female) Andean condors received for nec

Hyalomma marginatum is the main vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and spotted fever rickettsiae in Europe. The distribution of H. marginatum is currently restricted to parts of southern Europe, northern Africa and Asia, and one of the drivers limiting distribution is climate, particularly temperature. As temperatures rise with climate change, parts of northern Europe currently considered too cold for H. marginatum to be able to survive may become suitable, including the United Kingdom (UK), presenting a potential public health concern. Here we use a series of modelling m

Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are increasing in the United States. Development of tick control tools have focused primarily on the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. Application of acaricides or entomopathogenic fungal agents to kill host-seeking ticks or ticks on rodents can suppress I. scapularis abundance in residential landscapes, but evidence is lacking for impact on human tick bites or tick-borne disease. Similar studies remain limited for the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.). Other knowledge gaps include how well homeowners and pest control companies perform in the b

Studies of mites on bats in the Mexican state Oaxaca are scarce. Our objective was therefore to evaluate the richness, infestation, and specificity of spinturnicid mites on bats in southern Oaxaca, Mexico. Bats were monthly captured from April 2010 to February 2011, in four sites using four mist-nets; also, we visited natural (crevices) and artificial roosts (tunnel). Of each bat we account the number of spinturnicid mites, considering the area of the body where they were collected. Mites were preserved in 70 % ethanol and later they were mounted on microscope slides in Hoyer's medium. We capt

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae is one of the most economically important ectoparasites in hens and some species of mammals worldwide. Cases of human infestation have been reported worldwide. In this study we report infestation in three members of a family referred with pruritus and allergic dermatitis rash. They have collected very small animals and carried them to the laboratory which later was confirmed as D. gallinae. They claimed that they had been bitten with this ectoparasite. This is the first case report of human infestation owing to D. gallinae from Iran.

Assuming the existence of tick parasitism in humans in the State of Pará, an aggregate observational study was developed along a transversal line in three cities of the State, during two years. Interviews and examinations of 2,160 townspeople and tourists were carried out, without discrimination of ethnic, sex, age, or social status, and classified for effects analyzed for four bands of age, six types of activities in the society, and two sexes. Larvae, nymphs, and adults of ticks had been identified with cases of parasitism involving six species, of the genus Amblyomma, the genus Ixodes, Rhip

Amitraz, a formamidine acaricide, plays an important role in the control of the southern cattle tick, Boophilus microplus (Canestrini), and other tick species that infest cattle, dogs, and wild animals. Although resistance to amitraz in B. microplus was previously reported in several countries, the actual measurement of the level of amitraz resistance in ticks has been difficult to determine due to the lack of a proper bioassay technique. We conducted a survey, by using a newly reported technique that was a modification of the standard Food and Agriculture Organization larval packet test, to m

Developmental forms of Babesia spp. were studied in isolated salivary glands of Ixodes ricinus, subjected to the Feulgen reaction. The same ticks were also hosts to Babesia microti, which was determined by PCR amplification with primers specific to the fragment of a gene encoding the nuclear small sub-unit ribosomal RNA (SS-rDNA). Presence of Babesia spp. was recorded in the salivary glands of 59.9% of ticks collected, both in nymphs and adults. PCR reactions specific to Babesia microti were positive in 1.9% of nymphs.

The seabird tick Ixodes uriae (Acari: Ixodidae) has a bi- and circumpolar distribution and is commonly infected with Lyme disease Borrelia. Identical Borrelia flagellin gene sequences have been detected in I. uriae from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, suggesting a transequatorial transport of Borrelia. Parsimony analysis of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and a part of 16S rDNA of I. uriae from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres indicated that northern and southern I. uriae might be reproductively separated. We hypothesize that Borrelia is probably not dispersed from on

We here report the case of a storage mite, Sancassania berlesei, infestation in the external auditory canal of a 46-yr-old male. He complained of feeling a foreign body and itching in the left external auditory canal for 1 mo, with accompanying otalgia for 3 days. Considering the duration of the patient's complaint and the 8-9-day life cycle of the mite, the mites are believed to have lived in the patient's ear for more than 3 generations.

Thai tick typhus rickettsia (strain TT-118), a spotted fever group rickettsia of indeterminant pathogenicity, was isolated from a mixed pool of larval Ixodes and Rhipicephalus ticks collected from Thailand in 1962. Here we report the surprising finding of a spotted fever group rickettsia with closest sequence homology to the Thai tick typhus rickettsia in Amblyomma cajennense (F.) ticks from south Texas. Sequence analysis was performed on segments of 3 genes that differentiate rickettsial species; all 3 genes sequenced, the 17-kDa, glta, and rompA, when compared with those of other rickettsiae

Resistance to Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma hebraeum was investigated in the laboratory by infesting rabbits with adults of each of the three species followed by homospecific or heterospecific secondary infestations. Significantly lower female engorged weights and egg mass weights were taken as evidence of protective immunity. Following a single infestation with adults, rabbits developed homospecific protective immunity (resistance) to only R. appendiculatus and A. hebraeum; primary infestation with A. variegatum did not protect against secondary infestation
