A highly inbred kinship is described, in which 19 individuals were afflicted with bilateral profound microphthalmia without associated anomalies and with normal intelligence. Autosomal recessive inheritance is demonstrated. This kindred is instructive for genetic counseling since the affected individuals always have bilateral microphthalmia in the absence of other affected organ systems.

The association of joint laxity and mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has been disputed. In this study of an Arab population, the joint mobility scores of 29 subjects with MVP, 10 of whom were asymptomatic, were compared to 60 normal controls. It was found that the joint mobility score was significantly higher in both the asymptomatic and the symptomatic subjects with MVP when compared to the controls. This suggests that both mitral valve prolapse and joint laxity may be due to the same abnormality of connective tissue structure.

Infection with both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis is prevalent with patchy distribution in Taiz Province, southwest Yemen Arab Republic. The United Arab Emirates has very little data on the incidence or prevalence of fungal diseases. Using total and underlying disease risk populations and likely affected proportions, we have modelled the burden of fungal disease for the first time. The most prevalent serious fungal conditions are recurrent vulvovaginitis (~190,000 affected) and fungal asthma (~34,000 affected). This study explored the impact of steam sterilization temperature and duration on the physicochemical and emulsification characteristics of gum arabic, accompanied by proposed mechanisms elucidating observed effects. PURPOSE: To report the first series of tubulointerstitial nephritis (TINU) syndrome from the Middle East.
METHODS: We retrospectively included patients with elevated urine beta-2 microglobulin, and a diagnosis of TINU based on anterior uveitis with or without posterior involvement. Multimodal imaging, duration of follow-up, local and systemic treatment used were recorded.
