Towards automatic assessment of atypical early motor development?

Atypical motor development is an early indicator for several neurodevelopmental conditions, including cerebral palsy and Rett Syndrome, prompting early diagnosis and intervention. While not currently part of the diagnostic criteria for other conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder, the frequent retrospective diagnosis of motor impairments alongside these conditions highlights the necessity of a deeper understanding of the relations between motor and cognitive development. Traditional clinical assessments, while considered the gold standard, rely on movement characteristics discernible to the

Description of automatic-voluntary dissociation of breathing in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory dysfunction in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) is often attributed to respiratory pump failure, yet central respiratory drive and automatic breathing control remain underexplored. We assessed the prevalence of breathing automatic-voluntary dissociation (AVD) in PwMS. METHODS: We analyzed prospectively collected data from a tertiary care rehabilitation center observational cohort. All adult PwMS, who underwent pulmonary function testing, including a CO₂ ventilatory response test, while relapse-free for ≥ 3 months, between January 2018 and December 2024 were screen

Accurate, automatic determination of astigmatism and phase with Ctfplotter in IMOD.

Ctfplotter in the IMOD software package is a flexible program for determination of CTF parameters in tilt series images. It uses a novel approach to find astigmatism by measuring defocus in one-dimensional power spectra rotationally averaged over a series of restricted angular ranges. Comparisons with Ctffind, Gctf, and Warp show that Ctfplotter's estimated astigmatism is generally more reliable than that found by these programs that fit CTF parameters to two-dimensional power spectra, especially at higher tilt angles. In addition to that intrinsic advantage, Ctfplotter can reduce the variabil

Automatic Voice Disorder Detection from a Practical Perspective.

Voice disorders, such as dysphonia, are common among the general population. These pathologies often remain untreated until they reach a high level of severity. Assisting the detection of voice disorders could facilitate early diagnosis and subsequent treatment. In this study, we address the practical aspects of automatic voice disorders detection (AVDD). In real-world scenarios, data annotated for voice disorders is usually scarce due to various challenges involved in the collection and annotation of such data. However, some relatively large datasets are available for a reduced number of doma

Rapid automatized naming: what it is, what it is not, and why it matters.

Rapid automatized naming (RAN) has surged in popularity recently as an important indicator of reading difficulties, including dyslexia. Despite an extensive history of research on RAN, including recent meta-analyses indicating a unique contribution of RAN to reading above and beyond phonemic awareness, questions remain regarding RAN's relationship to reading. Specific questions exist regarding how PA mediates that relationship and how best to use data from RAN measures to identify risk for reading failure. Through multiple studies, we demonstrate that RAN is not merely subsumed by skills typic

Training rapid automatized naming in children with developmental Dyslexia.

The recommended rehabilitation procedures for Developmental Dyslexia (DD) are not well defined, and there is currently a large debate on which therapeutic approaches are shown to be more useful and effective. Among the trainings focused on general dysfunctional cognitive processes associated with a reading disorder, recent studies suggested the efficacy of trainings on Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) compared to others. The present study was aimed at confirming the effectiveness of RAN training (RANt) to improve the reading performances of children with DD (n = 32) compared to children on a wai

Automatic Speech Recognition in Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

INTRODUCTION: Transcribing disordered speech can be useful when diagnosing motor speech disorders such as primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS), who have sound additions, deletions, and substitutions, or distortions and/or slow, segmented speech. Since transcribing speech can be a laborious process and requires an experienced listener, using automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for diagnosis and treatment monitoring is appealing. This study evaluated the efficacy of a readily available ASR system (wav2vec 2.0) in transcribing speech of PPAOS patients to determine if the word erro

Automatic assessment of nailfold capillaroscopy software: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Capillaroscopy is a simple method of nailfold capillary imaging, used to diagnose diseases from the systemic sclerosis spectrum. However, the assessment of the capillary image is time-consuming and subjective. This makes it difficult to use for a detailed comparison of studies assessed by various physicians. This pilot study aimed to validate software used for automatic capillary counting and image classification as normal or pathological. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was based on the assessment of 200 capillaroscopic images obtained from patients suffering from systemic scle

An Automatic Method for Sublingual Image Segmentation and Color Analysis.

Automatic segmentation of sublingual images and color quantification of sublingual vein are of great significance to disease diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine. With the development of computer vision, automatic sublingual image processing provides a noninvasive way to observe patients' tongue and is convenient for both doctors and patients. However, current sublingual image segmentation methods are not accurate enough. Besides, the differences in subjective judgments by different doctors bring more difficulties in color analysis of sublingual veins. In this paper, we propose a method o

Automatic classification of symmetry of hemithoraces in canine and feline radiographs.

PURPOSE: Thoracic radiographs are commonly used to evaluate patients with confirmed or suspected thoracic pathology. Proper patient positioning is more challenging in canine and feline radiography than in humans due to less patient cooperation and body shape variation. Improper patient positioning during radiograph acquisition has the potential to lead to a misdiagnosis. Asymmetrical hemithoraces are one of the indications of obliquity for which we propose an automatic classification method. APPROACH: We propose a hemithoraces segmentation method based on convolutional neural networks and act

Attacks to Automatous Vehicles: A Deep Learning Algorithm for Cybersecurity.

Rapid technological development has changed drastically the automotive industry. Network communication has improved, helping the vehicles transition from completely machine- to software-controlled technologies. The autonomous vehicle network is controlled by the controller area network (CAN) bus protocol. Nevertheless, the autonomous vehicle network still has issues and weaknesses concerning cybersecurity due to the complexity of data and traffic behaviors that benefit the unauthorized intrusion to a CAN bus and several types of attacks. Therefore, developing systems to rapidly detect message

Automatic compensation enhances the orientation perception in chronic astigmatism.

Astigmatism is a prevalent optical problem in which two or more focal points blur the retinal image at a particular meridian. Although many features of astigmatic vision, including orientation perception, are impaired at the retinal image level, the visual system appears to partly restore perceptual impairment after an extended period of astigmatism. However, the mechanism of orientation perception restoration in chronic astigmatism has not yet been clarified. We investigated the notable reduction of perceptual error in chronic astigmatism by comparing the orientation perception of a chronic a

Automatic Coding of Facial Expressions of Pain: Are We There Yet?

INTRODUCTION: The experience of pain is regularly accompanied by facial expressions. The gold standard for analyzing these facial expressions is the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which provides so-called action units (AUs) as parametrical indicators of facial muscular activity. Particular combinations of AUs have appeared to be pain-indicative. The manual coding of AUs is, however, too time- and labor-intensive in clinical practice. New developments in automatic facial expression analysis have promised to enable automatic detection of AUs, which might be used for pain detection. OBJECTI

Automatic recognition of micronucleus by combining attention mechanism and AlexNet.

BACKGROUND: Micronucleus (MN) is an abnormal fragment in a human cell caused by disorders in the mechanism regulating chromosome segregation. It can be used as a biomarker for genotoxicity, tumor risk, and tumor malignancy. The in vitro micronucleus assay is a commonly used method to detect micronucleus. However, it is time-consuming and the visual scoring can be inconsistent. METHODS: To alleviate this issue, we proposed a computer-aided diagnosis method combining convolutional neural networks and visual attention for micronucleus recognition. The backbone of our model is AlexNet without any

Automaticity and Executive Abilities in Developmental Dyslexia: A Theoretical Review.

Cognitive difficulties are well documented in developmental dyslexia but they present a challenge to dyslexia theory. In this paper, the Model of the Control of Action is proposed as a theoretical explanation of how and why deficits in both automaticity and executive abilities are apparent in the cognitive profiles of dyslexia and how these deficits might relate to literacy difficulties. This theoretical perspective is used to consider evidence from different cognitive domains. The neuroanatomical underpinnings of automaticity and executive abilities are then discussed in relation to the under

Automatic Detection of Horner Syndrome by Using Facial Images.

Horner syndrome is a clinical constellation that presents with miosis, ptosis, and facial anhidrosis. It is important as a warning sign of the damaged oculosympathetic chain, potentially with serious causes. However, the diagnosis of Horner syndrome is operator dependent and subjective. This study aims to present an objective method that can recognize Horner sign from facial photos and verify its accuracy. A total of 173 images were collected, annotated, and divided into training and testing groups. Two types of classifiers were trained (two-stage classifier and one-stage classifier). The two-
