BACKGROUND: Various systemic agents have been assessed for the treatment of alopecia areata (AA); however, there is a paucity of comparative studies.
OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare cyclosporine and betamethasone minipulse therapy as treatments for AA with regard to effectiveness and safety.
METHODS: Data were collected from 88 patients who received at least 3 months of oral cyclosporine (n=51) or betamethasone minipulse therapy (n=37) for AA. Patients with ≥50% of terminal hair regrowth in the alopecic area were considered responders.

The influence of methotrexate and of betamethasone on a following phototoxic reaction to 8-methoxypsoralen and long-wave ultraviolet light (PUVA) was studied in the mouse. High PUVA doses were not influenced by the two drugs tested. Both methotrexate and betamethasone tended to diminish the PUVA response when psoralen was given in a medium dose.

Of 43 women admitted with premature rupture of the membranes between 27 and 32 weeks' gestation, 27 received antepartum glucocorticoid with delivery timed to occur approximately 24 hours after the first dose of steriod. A double-blind comparison of the effectiveness of 0.25% desoxymethasone and 0.05% betamethasone 17,21-dipropionate creams was carried out in 40 patients with symmetrical, chronic psoriatic lesions. The lesions were pre-treated for 1 week with an inactive cream base and then the trial preparations were applied, without occlusion, to one or other side at random twice daily for 21 days. Overall response to treatment and the effect of the two topical steroids on scaling, induration, erythema, and pruritus were assessed at the start of and 4, 7, 14, and 21 days after the start of active treatment.

Three patients with chronic discoid psoriasis are described as having a generalized pustular eruption provoked by the topical use of betamethasone-dipropionate ointment (0.05%) over extensive skin areas for two or three weeks. All the lesions were nearly healed when the rash erupted.
