25-OH-vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and calcium serum levels in captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus): Reference values and effect of age, sex, season, and closure of long bone epiphyses.

BACKGROUND: To date, reference values for 25-OH-vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and calcium in serum of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) based on a large sample size are not available. METHODS: Serum reference values for these parameters were determined and correlated with sex, age, season of sampling, and time of long bone epiphyseal closure in captive-housed marmosets. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The 90% reference range for serum 25-OH-vitamin D is 47.40-370.4 nmol/L, for PTH 2.10-30.51 pmol/L, and for calcium 2.08-2.63 mmol/L. Lower levels of vitamin D were measured in fall compar

Striatal leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 mRNA is increased in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-lesioned common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) with L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine methyl ester-induced dyskinesia.

The level of leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (Lrrk2) mRNA expression was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in anterior striatum from normal and 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) that had L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine methyl ester (L-DOPA)-induced dyskinesia. The level of striatal Lrrk2 mRNA was increased in MPTP-treated common marmosets that had L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia compared with normal animals that did not receive l-DOPA. Marmosets that exhibited higher levels of dyskinesia had the greatest increase in

Greater occupancy of invasive hybrid marmosets compared to a threatened native species in the fragmented Atlantic Forest: implications for conservation.

Endemic to the Atlantic Forest, Callithrix aurita faces endangerment due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and yellow fever epidemics, exacerbated by the introduction of non-native marmoset species, which heightens the risk of competition, hybridization, and genetic erosion. In this study, we employed playback methods and occupancy models to investigate habitat use by C. aurita and hybrid marmoset groups (Callithrix spp.) across 15 forest fragments in Guidoval, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We examined the influence of forest connectivity and distance from Guidoval's urban center on the occupan

High infection prevalences by Trypanosoma minasense in non-human primates from the Southeast region of Brazil.

Non-human primates (NHPs) are reported as exclusive hosts of Trypanosoma minasense, whose transmission cycle remains unknown. We investigated trypanosomatid infections in 194 NHPs of nine species from the Brazilian Southeast region. We evaluated the impact of landscape composition and forest fragmentation on T. minasense infection. In the Atlantic Forest areas, Sapajus nigritus presented a higher positivity for T. minasense on the blood slides (60.9%) compared to Callithrix spp. (24.6%) and Alouatta guariba clamitans (20.7%); molecular analysis revealed higher infection prevalences in S. nigri

Histopathological Changes and Immune Response Profile in the Brains of Non-Human Primates Naturally Infected with Yellow Fever Virus.

In the history of yellow fever (YF) outbreaks in Brazil, howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) and marmosets (Callithrix sp.) have been among the most affected genera, exhibiting significant hepatic injuries similar to those seen in humans. However, limited information exists regarding yellow fever virus (YFV) infection in their central nervous system (CNS). To address this gap, an epidemiological study was conducted to assess tissue changes, viral detection, and cytokine profiles in the brains of both neotropical primate species when they are naturally infected with YFV. A total of 22 brain samples f

Molecular Surveillance of Plasmodium spp. Infection in Neotropical Primates from Bahia and Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In Brazil, Plasmodium infections in non-human primates (NHPs) have been associated with P. simium and P. brasilianum, which are morphologically and genetically similar to the human-infecting species P. vivax and P. malariae, respectively. Surveillance and monitoring of wild NHPs are crucial for understanding the distribution of these parasites and assessing the risk of zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to detect the presence of Plasmodium spp. genetic material in Platyrrhini primates from 47 municipalities in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. The animals were captured using Tomahawk-

Comparison of androgen receptor and oestrogen receptor beta immunoexpression in the testes of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) from birth to adulthood: low androgen receptor immunoexpression in Sertoli cells during the neonatal increase in testosterone concentrations.

The aims of this study were: (i) to investigate the cellular immunoexpression of androgen receptor and oestrogen receptor beta in the testes of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) during neonatal life compared with their expression at later ages; (ii) to establish whether neonatal marmoset Sertoli cells are targets for androgens or oestrogens or both; and (iii) to investigate the relationship between neonatal plasma testosterone concentrations and androgen receptor immunoexpression by abolishing the neonatal testosterone surge with a potent GnRH antagonist. Androgen receptor and oestrogen

Polyphasic identification (MALDI-TOF + ITS) of mucosal yeasts in hybrid marmosets from Rio de Janeiro.

Callithrix comprises primates popularly known as marmosets. In the city of Rio de Janeiro, the occurrence of a hybrid form of invasive species prevails. These animals, treated here as Callithrix spp., host several microorganisms in their microbiota, some of which can be pathogenic for humans. The aim of this study to describe culture-dependent yeast microbiota of the oral, rectal, and vaginal mucosae of hybrid marmosets (Callithrix spp.) inhabiting an urban–forest interface in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro. Oral, rectal and vaginal samples were collected from 12 individuals during the

Prevalence and description of dental disorders in skulls of free-living wild primates from Paraná State, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Non-human primates can present oral diseases. However, differences among the dentition of the various species make it difficult to understand their dental features and associated diseases. This research hypothesizes that the prevalence of dental disorders varies in the species studied according to distinct types of diet. METHODS: Forty-five syncraniums of the species Alouatta caraya, Alouatta guariba clamitans, Sapajus nigritus, Callithrix jacchus, and Callithrix penicillata were evaluated by visual inspection, magnifying glasses, and on cone-beam computed tomography. Nasal and intrathalamic inoculations of primates with Tacaribe virus: protection against Argentine hemorrhagic fever and absence of neurovirulence.

Callithrix jacchus marmosets were inoculated by different routes with two stocks of Tacaribe virus, one from suckling mouse brain and another from human diploid MRC5 cells. All 12 primates inoculated by nasal route developed neutralizing serum antibodies without any clinical signs. All 6 primates receiving the mouse brain-Tacaribe virus were protected against lethal challenge with pathogenic XJ strain of Junin virus, while protection was also conferred in 4 out of 6 primates receiving the diploid cell-Tacaribe virus stock. Intramuscular (i.m.) inoculation also elicited antibodies and conferred

Toxoplasmosis outbreak caused by north American genotypes in captive black-tufted marmosets in southern Brazil.

In this study, we describe an outbreak of toxoplasmosis in an enclosure of five Callithrix penicillata in Southern Brazil. The marmosets were found dead and submitted to necropsy and histopathology. Liver, spleen, and lungs were frozen and sent for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested-PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii. Necropsy revealed a liver with a lobular pattern, along with diffusely congested lungs, spleen, and kidneys, and hemorrhage in the mesenteric lymph nodes. Mild-to-moderate, multifocal, necrotic hepatitis and splenitis, mult

Yellow fever epizootics in non-human primates, Southeast and Northeast Brazil (2017 and 2018).

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever (YF) is a severe, infectious, but non-communicable arboviral hemorrhagic disease. In the last decades, yellow fever virus (YFV) infections have been prevalent in endemic areas in Brazil, affecting human and non-human primate (NHP) populations. Monitoring of NHP infection started in 1999, and reports of epizootic diseases are considered important indicators of viral transmission, particularly in relation to the sylvatic cycle. This study presents the monitoring of YFV by real-time RT-PCR and the epidemiological findings related to the deaths of NHPs in the south-eastern

Simulation of Viral Hepatitis E in Marmosets.

We developed a model of hepatitis E virus infection in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and determined optimal route of infection, duration, clinical and virological characteristics of infection in laboratory animals. Using this model, we demonstrated that replication of hepatitis E virus primarily occurs in the liver, while virus replication presumed to take place in the intestine was not confirmed in this experiment.

Epizootics due to Yellow Fever Virus in São Paulo State, Brazil: viral dissemination to new areas (2016-2017).

Beginning in late 2016 Brazil faced the worst outbreak of Yellow Fever in recent decades, mainly located in southeastern rural regions of the country. In the present study we characterize the Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) associated with this outbreak in São Paulo State, Brazil. Blood or tissues collected from 430 dead monkeys and 1030 pools containing a total of 5,518 mosquitoes were tested for YFV by quantitative RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and indirect immunofluorescence. A total of 67 monkeys were YFV-positive and 3 pools yielded YFV following culture in a C6/36 cell line. Analysis of fi

Common Marmoset Model of α-Synuclein Propagation.

The propagation of assembled α-synuclein (αS) is key to understanding the pathological mechanisms of synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Here we describe a nonhuman primate model of αS propagation using common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) with an intracerebral injection of synthetic preformed αS fibrils. This protocol enables observation of the formation of phosphorylated αS pathology and its propagation three months after the injection.

Phylogenetic analysis of rabies surveillance samples from north and northeast Brazil.

Viruses of the Lyssavirus genus are classified into several genotypes (GT1 to GT7), of which only GT1 (classic rabies virus-RABV) has a cosmopolitan distribution and circulates in Brazil. GT1 is subdivided into several antigenic variants (AgV) maintained in independent cycles with a narrow host range and distinct geographic distributions, namely, AgV1 and AgV2 found in dogs, AgV3 in the vampire bats Desmodus rotundus, and AgV4 and AgV6 in bats non-hematophagous Tadarida brasiliensis and Lasiurus cinereus, a common variant of marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), and crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous).
