Adult attachment and pain catastrophizing for self and significant other.

A growing body of research indicates that attachment insecurity is associated with pain-related catastrophizing. Attachment anxiety has consistently been found to be positively associated with pain catastrophizing. In contrast, the relationship between attachment avoidance and pain catastrophizing has been less consistent. The current study was designed to (a) determine whether anxiety accounts for unique variance in catastrophizing beyond that contributed by the overlapping constructs of self-esteem and neuroticism and (b) clarify the relationship between avoidance and catastrophizing by inve

Pain Catastrophizing Scale for Francophone Adolescents: a preliminary validation.

BACKGROUND: In adults, it is well known that high levels of pain catastrophizing are related to increased pain and disability as well as to heightened anxiety and depression. However, due to the lack of a measure of pain catastrophizing adapted for francophone adolescents, little is known about the role of catastrophizing in this population. OBJECTIVES: To adapt the French version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and to examine the psychometric properties and factorial structure of the PCS for Francophone Adolescents (PCS-Ado). METHODS: The French version of the PCS was modified by a

[Imagined exposure as treatment of catastrophizing in fibromyalgia: a pilot study].

INTRODUCTION: We want to assess the effectiveness of a new approach (imagined exposure) for the Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT) in fibromyalgia. STUDY DESIGN: Quasi-experimental design of a temporary nature in a single group with pre and post and with/without treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fibromyalgia (FM) patients, who met the American College of Rheumatology's criteria for FM. In this study eight people took part, seven females and one male, selected from FM Cantabria Association. The CBT consisted of 11 group sessions and lasted 15 weeks. All patients were evaluated before and af

A potential catastrophic trap: an unusually presenting sellar lesion.

A 63-year-old man was admitted to our emergency unit complaining headache, vomit and vertigo. A MR of the brain showed an expanding lesion within the sellar region. A subsequent angio-MR excluded any intracranial vascular malformations. Surprisingly, a cerebral angiography performed later on the basis of worsening of neurological signs and symptoms, demonstrated an aneurysm of the internal carotid artery. At the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a thrombosis of an intracavernous carotid aneurysm mimicking a pituitary apoplexy documented by MR and angio-MR. The treatment of a mil

Are there gender differences in catastrophic appraisals in panic disorder with agoraphobia?

Our aim in this study was to compare panic-related catastrophic appraisals between women and men with panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA). One hundred two outpatients with PDA (75 women and 27 men) participated. Two instruments for the assessment of catastrophic appraisals, Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire and Panic Appraisal Inventory, were administered before and after cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that also included pharmacotherapy in three-fourths of the patients. Female and male patients did not differ significantly in terms of their tendency to anticipate catastrophic conseque

Heart failure and nephropathy: catastrophic and interrelated complications of diabetes.

Heart failure (HF) is a major contributor to poor quality of life, a leading cause of hospitalization, and cause of premature death. Both kidney disease and diabetes are major and independent risk factors for the development of heart failure, such that individuals with diabetic nephropathy are at especially high risk. Such patients not only are likely to have coronary artery disease and hypertension but also are likely to have diabetic cardiomyopathy, a distinct pathologic entity that is more closely associated with the microvascular than the macrovascular complications of diabetes. In additio

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome complicating orthotopic liver transplantation.

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is an acutely devastating situation characterized by widespread thrombotic microangiopathy in the presence of elevated titers of antiphospholipid antibodies. We describe a 57-year old woman who underwent liver transplantation for primary sclerosing cholangitis and developed this malignant variant of the antiphospholipid syndrome.

Bioterrorism and catastrophe response: a quick-reference guide to resources.

BACKGROUND: Dentists' responses to catastrophe have been redefined by bioterrorism. Informed response requires accurate information about agents and diseases that have the potential to be used as weapons. METHODS: The authors reviewed information about the most probable bioterrorist weapons (those from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Category A) from the World Wide Web and print journals and distilled it into a resource list that is current, relevant to dentistry and noncommercial. The Web sites cited include those sponsored by federal agencies, academic institutions and profe

Clinical study of catastrophic infantile epilepsy with focal seizures.

This study investigated clinico-electrical and etiologic characteristics of catastrophic infantile epilepsy with focal seizures developed in early infancy. The patients included 15 children who fulfilled the following criteria: seizure onset before 12 months of age, presence of daily focal or secondarily generalized seizures resistant to antiepileptic drugs for at least 3 months, and exclusion of Ohtahara and West syndromes. Patients were classified into three subgroups. Three patients demonstrated progressively deteriorating neurologic symptoms associated with progressive cerebral atrophy and

Resection of the lesion in patients with hypothalamic hamartomas and catastrophic epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) often have severe refractory epilepsy, incapacitating behavioral abnormalities, and cognitive decline. Attempts to control the seizure disorder by resection of apparently epileptogenic mesial temporal or other cortical structures have failed consistently. OBJECTIVE: To report a series of 13 patients in whom the hamartoma itself was resected. METHODS: All patients underwent preoperative evaluation between ages 2 and 33 years and had subtotal or complete resection of the hamartoma. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 5.5 years (mean: 2.8 y). RESUL

Benign occipital epilepsy mimicking a catastrophic intracranial event.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the rare, dramatic, presentation of benign occipital epilepsy. METHODS: We describe three children who presented to the pediatric emergency department from 1992 to 1996 with a clinical picture of catastrophic intracranial event. RESULTS: The main signs and symptoms were loss of consciousness in all patients, apnea in two, hemiclonus in two, general hypertonicity in two, eye deviation in two, fixed dilated pupils in one, and decorticate rigidity in two. All underwent emergency intubation, brain scan, and lumbar puncture, and all were treated with antibiotics, in additio

Acute respiratory failure associated with catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome.

We present a case of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome with acute respiratory failure due to alveolar haemorrhage associated with antiphospholipid antibodies in a 42-year-old woman with a medical history of antinuclear antibody-negative systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome. Severe respiratory failure, circulatory shock and acute renal failure necessitated artificial ventilation, inotropic and vasopressor therapy, and continuous venovenous haemofiltration. A tentative diagnosis of haemorrhagic lupus pneumonitis or pulmonary manifestation of antiphospholipid syndrome was

[Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. Communication of 2 forms of presentation].

Antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by recurrent fetal loss, arterial and venous thromboses, thrombocytopenia and circulating antiphospholipid antibodies. Few patients have a rapidly progressive, fatal outcome. We report two young patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid antibodies who died after a short course of disease. Although clinical and laboratory findings differed in both patients--small vessel thromboses and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia mimicking thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura predominated in one of the patients while small and medium size vess

Catastrophizing, pain, and disability in patients with soft-tissue injuries.

The present study examined the role of catastrophizing in predicting levels of pain and disability in a sample of individuals who had sustained soft-tissue injuries to the neck, shoulders or back following work or motor vehicle accidents. Participants were 86 (27 men, 59 women) consecutive referrals to the Atlantic Pain Clinic, a multidisciplinary treatment centre for the management of persistent pain disorders. Findings revealed that catastrophizing, measured by the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS; Sullivan, M.J.L. et al., Psychol. Assess., 7 (1995) 524-532) was significantly correlated with
