BACKGROUND: Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a primary cicatricial alopecia that most commonly affects women of African descent. Like CCCA, fibroproliferative disorders (FPDs) such as keloids, atherosclerosis, and fibroids are characterized by low-grade inflammation and irritation, resulting in end-stage fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Hypergravitational exposures during human centrifugation are known to provoke dysrhythmias, including sinus dysrhythmias/tachycardias, premature atrial/ventricular contractions, and even atrial fibrillations or flutter patterns. INTRODUCTION: Future commercial spaceflight participants (SFPs) with conditions requiring personal medical devices represent a unique challenge. The behavior under stress of cardiac implanted devices (CIDs) such as pacemakers is of special concern. No known data currently exist on how such devices may react to the stresses of spaceflight. Wall shear stress on the pump casing cover was measured using a surface-mounted hot-film sensor. In addition, the shear stress distribution in the pump was qualitatively investigated by means of oil-film visualization. Adaptation of the vestibular system, specifically the otolith organs, to a non-terrestrial environment can result in space motion sickness-like symptoms when the human is reintroduced to the normal, 1 Gz, terrestrial environment. We evaluated the Du Pont Theophylline Assay, a particle-enhanced turbidimetric inhibition immunoassay (PETINIA) for the measurement of theophylline in human serum. The procedure was applied to the Cobas-Bio centrifugal analyzer, and was compared to an enzyme immunoassay (EMIT) method and a high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) procedure. Day-to-day precision was 3.7% (1 SD coefficient of variation) at 7.1 mg/L, 3.3% at 17.7 mg/L, and 3.9% at 27.8 mg/L. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of two density gradient centrifugation media for retrieving spermatozoa from semen samples by evaluating the total motile sperm count (TMSC) and the percentage recovery.
METHODS: Twenty-two men with different sperm counts participated in the study. The samples were divided into two equal aliquots and processed using the commercial ISolate Sperm Separation Medium (Irvine Scientific, United States) and the GV Gradiente (IngáMed, Brazil).
