Development of an electronic medical record-based child physical abuse alert system.

OBJECTIVE: Physical abuse is a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality. Physicians do not consistently screen for abuse, even in high-risk situations. Alerts in the electronic medical record may help improve screening rates, resulting in early identification and improved outcomes. METHODS: Triggers to identify children < 2 years old at risk for physical abuse were coded into the electronic medical record at a freestanding pediatric hospital with a level 1 trauma center. The system was run in "silent mode"; physicians were unaware of the system, but study personnel received data on

Determinants of neonatal brain-derived neurotrophic factor and association with child development.

Using a population-based birth cohort in upstate New York (2008-2010), we examined the determinants of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) measured in newborn dried blood spots (n = 2,637). We also examined the association between neonatal BDNF and children's development. The cohort was initially designed to examine the influence of infertility treatment on child development but found no impact. Mothers rated children's development in five domains repeatedly through age 3 years. Socioeconomic and maternal lifestyle determinants of BDNF were examined using multivariable linear regression m

[Child and adolescent development: common mental disorders according to age and gender].

Despite the increase in the incidence and prevalence rates of children and adolescents' mental disorders, there are few works performed with large and representative samples of children and adolescents with psychopathological symptoms. The present work analyses 588 participants referred by first care pediatricians to a specialized unit for children and adolescents' mental health. As a result of the study, a statistically significant relation was found between age and diagnosis: a larger incidence of behavioral disorders, communication disorders, elimination disorders, pervasive developmental d

[The effect of environmental tobacco smoke during pregnancy on psychomotor child development].

The association between maternal smoking and retarded maternal condition and birth outcome is well know. Smoking during pregnancy increase risk of preterm delivery, hipotrofia, delayed developmental of respiratory and nervous system. The risk for most of thisconditions has been found to increase with the number of cigarettes smoked. The last examination shows that environmental tobacco smoke during pregnancy leads to physical problems, behavioral problems even mental retardation.

Prenatal cocaine exposure, child development, and the compromising effects of cumulative risk.

On the whole, the literature suggests that toddlers and young children who are exposed prenatally to cocaine exhibit few, if any, consistent differences in developmental functioning compared with demographically similar, nonexposed, age-matched controls. The paucity of cocaine-related findings does not mean that prenatally cocaine-exposed children are free from developmental problems. Cocaine-exposed infants may well have specific deficits that are masked by confounding factors in study designs; however, more important is the worrisome finding that the average performance of both drug-exposed

The European study of assisted reproduction families: family functioning and child development.

Findings are presented of a European study (conducted in the UK, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands) of family relationships and the social and emotional development of children in families created as a result of the two most widely used reproductive technologies, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor insemination (DI), in comparison with control groups of families with naturally conceived child and adoptive families. Mothers of children conceived by assisted reproduction expressed greater warmth towards their child, were more emotionally involved with their child, interacted more with their ch

Associations between perinatal biomarkers of maternal dairy fat intake and child cognitive development: results from the EDEN mother-child cohort.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Offspring's optimal neurodevelopment depends on maternal dietary lipids supply during the perinatal period. Dairy products are an important source of fat in Western diets. This study aimed at examining the associations between maternal dairy fat intake during pregnancy, evaluated through biomarkers in perinatal biofluids (C15:0 and C17:0) and child's cognitive outcomes. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants (N up to 1200) were French mother-child pairs from the EDEN cohort study. Biomarkers were assessed in the following biofluids: maternal red blood cells (RBC) membrane at 24

Psychometric evidence for assessing early childhood development in Brazil: the Child Development Diagnostic Form in the Criança Feliz Program.

INTRODUCTION: Child development is a multidimensional process influenced by socioeconomic conditions. The Programa Criança Feliz (PCF), Brazil's largest home-visiting initiative, uses the Formulário de Observação Inicial do Desenvolvimento Infantil (FOIDI) to monitor developmental milestones. Despite being widely implemented, the FOIDI had not previously undergone formal validation. This study evaluated configural and metric validity of FOIDI in a representative sample of Brazilian children aged 0-36 months. METHODS: A total of 183 974 assessments from 82 797 children in PCF (2020-2023) were

Quantifying brain development in the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study: The magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy protocol.

The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. The acquisition of multimodal magnetic resonance-based brain development data is central to the study's core protocol. However, application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methods in this population is complicated by technical challenges and difficulties of imaging in early life. Overcoming these challenges requires an innovative and harmonized ap

The mediating role of parent-child bonding for the prospective association of prenatal depressive symptoms with child development at 14 months postpartum.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms in the perinatal period as well as difficulties developing an emotional bond towards the child have been described as potential risk factors for poor child development. Few studies have investigated the mediating role of parent-child bonding for the association between prenatal depressive symptoms and child outcomes. Research on this association is especially scarce regarding the paternal perspective. This study investigated the prospective association between both parents' prenatal depressive symptoms and child development, taking the mediating role of parent-c

The impact of postpartum obsessive-compulsive symptoms on child development and the mediating role of the parent-child relationship: A prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The first 2 years of life are a particularly sensitive period for the parent-child relationship as well as a healthy, age-appropriate child development. Both have been shown to be linked to postpartum depressive and anxiety symptoms, while the role of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, which are also common, is still largely understudied. In addition, fathers have been neglected in this area of research. This study, which includes both mothers and fathers, aims to investigate the longitudinal associations between postpartum obsessive-compulsive symptoms and different domains of child d

The roles of peritraumatic dissociation, child physical abuse, and child sexual abuse in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder and adult victimization.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has indicated that women who experience childhood physical abuse or childhood sexual abuse are at increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adult victimization. Recently, peritraumatic dissociation (PD) has been suggested as another possible risk factor for PTSD and adult victimization. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of childhood physical and sexual abuse and PD on PTSD and adult victimization. METHOD: A sample of 467 female college students completed questionnaires about childhood and adult sexual and physical ab

Development of a Brief Psychological Trauma Intervention for Child Sexual Abuse in India.

Despite the alarming increase in incidences of child sexual abuse (CSA) in India, intervention research remains preliminary and generic. Although Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has been found to be consistently effective in addressing the adverse consequences of CSA, none of the cultural adaptations of CBT have been evidenced in India so far. Hence, the present study was conceived to develop a CSA-focused brief CBT intervention for children between 7 and 13 years of age. Intervention development progressed through four steps: 1) a systematic review of literature; 2) a qualitative study, incl

Sex differences in the canalization of child growth and development: An example of genetic regulation.

In case of a disease or nutritional deficit, the growth curve may show deviations from the percentile it was depicting, and once damage is removed, a strong regulatory force tends to restore its path. Such phenomenon is known as catch-up growth and is an example of canalization of growth. Girls are more favored than boys because, when faced with the same damage, their growth (and also their psychomotor development) shows less deviation than that of boys. Such difference is also shown in a higher prevalence among boys of growth retardation in general and some developmental disorders, including

DEVELOPMENT OF THE PARENT-CHILD PLAY SCALE FOR USE IN CHILDREN WITH FEEDING DISORDERS.

The Parent-Child Play Scale was developed as a scale that complements the Parent-Child Feeding Scale, created by I. Chatoor et al. (1997), to evaluate mother-infant/toddler interactions in two different caregiving contexts of a young child's everyday life, specifically play and feeding. This Play Scale can be used with infants and toddlers ranging in age from 1 month to 3 years and provides reliable global ratings of mother-child interactions during 10 min of videotaped free-play in a laboratory setting. The scale consists of 32 mother and infant/toddler interactive behaviors which are rated b

Development of a Measure to Assess Parent Perceptions of Barriers to Child Weight Management.

BACKGROUND: Families face many barriers related to creating or maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which likely contributes to the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States; however, no measure currently exists to examine these barriers. This study developed a quantitative measure of parents' perceptions of barriers to family healthy lifestyle. METHODS: Parents of children between the ages of 7-17 were recruited using Amazon Mturk (n = 812). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and preliminary convergent validity analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Four factors emerged in the f

Child sexual abuse and the development of psychiatric disorders: a neurobiological trajectory of pathogenesis.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is an important public health problem with long-standing neurobiological, developmental, and psychiatric abnormalities. The present review analyzes the long-term effects of CSA from a developmental, psychiatric morbidity, neurochemical and neurobiological perspective and then tries to posit a developmental neurobiological trajectory from CSA to the genesis of psychopathology in later life. The role of various neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine affected by CSA are discussed. Serotonin abnormalities have been reported in various studies among participants e
