Two restriction endonucleases (Cla I and Hpa II) produced polymorphic repetitive DNA profiles which were used in a clustering analysis to quantify the level of genetic variation among 14 North American sylvatic isolates of T5 Trichinella. Differences in genetic profiles reflected phenotypic differences in parasite reproductive success as measured by an isolate's reproductive capacity index in natural hosts. Two genetically distinct isolates of the T5 genotype and T. spiralis were used to infect white-footed mice Peromyscus leucopus for a behavioral analysis. Three behavioral characteristics we

Hepatozoonosis can cause serious illness in dogs in the USA resulting in muscle weakness and bone deformities. It is often fatal, and treatment is expensive and not curative. There are two recognized species of Hepatozoon which infect dogs, Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon americanum, transmitted by ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Amyboloma maculatum, respectively. Hepatozoon canis has worldwide distribution and H. americanum is currently confined to the USA. Wildlife reservoirs of H. americanum have not been established but coyote (Canis latrans) is suspected, and infection is c

The current systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate the genotypic distribution of canine echinococcosis worldwide. Studies published from the inception until 21 May 2021 were screened, relevant articles were selected and the random-effect model was used to draw forest plots with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Totally, 44 articles were included, mostly examined dogs (37 records), followed by wolf (8 records), jackal (7 records), fox (3 records), pump fox (3 records) and coyote (1 record). Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (G1–G3) and G6/7 cluster of Echinococcus canadensis were the

Onchocerca lupi is a vector-borne filaroid which affects wild (i.e., wolves, coyotes) and domestic carnivores (i.e., dogs, cats), and occasionally humans. This nematode causes ocular damage due to the location of adult worms embedded in the eye connective tissues. Several human cases of onchocercosis by O. lupi have been reported in Europe, Asia, north Africa, and the USA where the infection thrives in dogs and less frequently in cats. In this study, we review clinical aspects of feline infestation by O. lupi, and report the first case of this onchocercid in a cat from Romania, showing a subco

Persistence of multiple variants of rabies virus in wild Chiroptera and Carnivora presents a continuing challenge to medical, veterinary and wildlife management professionals. Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) targeting specific Carnivora species has emerged as an integral adjunct to conventional rabies control strategies to protect humans and domestic animals. ORV has been applied with progress toward eliminating rabies in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in western Europe and southern Ontario, Canada. More recently since 1995, coordinated ORV was implemented among eastern states in the U.S.A. to preven

Echinococcus multilocularis is one of the most relevant zoonotic parasites with about 18,000 human cases per year. Its detection in wild host is crucial for disease prevention. The present study aimed to determine factors affecting the sensitivity of E. multilocularis detection by PCR using DNA extracted from fecal samples of coyotes (Canis latrans). Fecal samples were screened for the presence of Taeniidae eggs through centrifugation and sedimentation. DNA was extracted from fecal samples with and without prior freeze-thawing of the sample and then subjected to PCR targeting a mitochondrial g

Rabies prevention in the United States (US) relies on a robust public health infrastructure that includes pet vaccination, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and wildlife surveillance, costing $245-$510 million annually but saving over $1 billion in avoided healthcare expenditures. While canine rabies has been eliminated from the US, wildlife reservoirs continue to pose a zoonotic threat, particularly bats, skunks, raccoons, and foxes. Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) programs targeting coyotes, foxes, and raccoons have demonstrated significant public health and economic benefits across multiple st

The causative agent of Lyme disease (LD), Borreliella burgdorferi, binds factor H (FH) and other complement regulatory proteins to its surface. B. burgdorferi B31 (type strain) encodes five FH-binding proteins (FHBPs): CspZ, CspA, and the OspE paralogs OspEBBN38, OspEBBL39, and OspEBBP38. This study assessed potential correlations between the production of individual FHBPs, FH-binding ability, and serum resistance using a panel of infectious B. burgdorferi clonal populations recovered from dogs. FHBP production was assessed in cultivated spirochetes and by antibody responses in naturally infec

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious pathogen that principally infects wildlife and domestic carnivores. Peridomestic species such as raccoons ( Procyon lotor) experience outbreaks with high mortality. Clinical signs of infection include anorexia, fever, respiratory infection, and neurologic complications. Although not zoonotic, CDV poses a high risk to unvaccinated domestic animals and the conservation of endangered species. During 2013-16, we opportunistically collected wild and domestic carnivore specimens through a rabies surveillance program in northern Colorado, US. Brains

Since 2003, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services has coordinated a multistate oral rabies vaccination (ORV) program for wildlife in a 15-state zone extending from Maine to Alabama and in Texas. The program seeks to enhance local control and prevent the spread of epizootic rabies among raccoons and, in Texas, among gray foxes and coyotes. The program uses baits containing liquid vaccinia-rabies glycoprotein (V-RG) recombinant virus vaccine. Because contact with ruptured baits can produce vaccinia virus infection in certain persons, surveillance for human and domestic animal co

An aerial baiting system was developed to deliver oral rabies vaccines to wild carnivore vectors of rabies, e.g., red fox, striped skunk, and raccoon. The bait consists of a polyethylene bag that contains either a 30-g hamburger ball or a 25-mL cube of polyurethane sponge coated with a wax-beef tallow mixture containing 100-150 mg of tetracycline as a biomarker. Attractants used with the sponge were added to the bag (e.g., liver slurry, cheeses, fish oils, or fruits). Baits (greater than 80,000) were dropped from light aircraft at densities of 18-120 baits/km2 over test areas in Ontario and Pe

The scholarly and scientific literature does not automatically correct itself. Erroneous findings may persist without correction or retraction. Following prior definitions of zombie articles that are retracted but continue to be cited affirmatively, we add another category of 'undead' articles. We define 'vampire' articles by two jointly necessary conditions. The first condition is irreproducibility, demonstrated by one or more failed efforts at replication or conditions that make replication impossible. We offer a novel typology of four categories of replication efforts. We propose a rule of

Canine and human anaplasmosis are tick-borne diseases caused by the obligate intracellular bacteria, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Anaplasma platys, respectively. In veterinary medicine, peptides derived from the immunodominant P44 protein are used to detect antibodies in serological point-of-care tests for anaplasmosis. To inform efforts to develop improved chimeric diagnostic proteins for anaplasmosis, the structure of the predicted surface-exposed domain (residues 151-308) of P44 was determined at a resolution of 1.65 Å. This domain comprises six α-helices and six short β-strands connected

The avian influenza virus is a global pathogen with significant health and economic implications. While primarily a pathogen of wild and domestic birds, recent outbreaks of the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) clade 2.3.4.4b have caused mortality in a wide variety of mammals, including members of the Canidae family, on multiple continents. Despite sporadic mortality events globally, the epidemiology and pathobiology of H5N1 HPAIV in wild canids remains poorly defined. During 2022-2024, 41 wild canid carcasses (diagnostic cases), including 23 red foxes and 18 gray foxes, wer

Wildlife are hosts of ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks that may transmit human and animal pathogens. Little is known about the ecology of many ectoparasite species native to southern Texas, or their role in pathogen maintenance and transmission. Much attention has been given to the role of nonnative nilgai antelope as cattle fever tick hosts and agents of dispersal, but little attention has been given to other ectoparasites that may utilize nilgai antelope as hosts. As southern Texas is a hot-spot for flea-borne (murine) typhus, it is important to examine flea species presence, abundance

The questions of the frequency, distance, and maximum size of the bones that carnivores, rodents, and other common taxa can disperse have been little addressed, especially in the later phases of skeletonization when individual bones are more subject to transport and loss. The present research utilized a sample of dry white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) bones in two locations in a forested urban environment dense with eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis), chipmunks (Tamias striatus), coyotes (Canis latrans), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and other potential scavenging taxa. Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of plague and is considered a category A priority pathogen due to its potential for high transmissibility and the significant morbidity and mortality it causes in humans. Y. pestis is endemic to the western United States and much of the world, necessitating programs to monitor for this pathogen on the landscape. Elevated human risk of plague infection has been spatially correlated with spikes in seropositive wildlife numbers, particularly rodent-eating carnivores, which are frequently in contact with the enzootic hosts and the associated arthropod vectors
