AIMS: Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDOS), a rare autosomal dominant condition caused by mutations in DLX3, is characterized by abnormalities in teeth, bone, and hair. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarized the most frequently reported dento-craniofacial features of TDOS.
METHODS: Searches were undertaken in five databases supplemented by manual scrutiny and a gray literature search. Observational and descriptive studies were included. Risk of bias was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Meta-analyses of continuous, binary, and proportion data were performed, with

We report on a 4-year-old boy with Knobloch syndrome. He has vitreoretinal degeneration, high myopia, cataract, telecanthus, hypertelorism, and a high-arched palate. He also has a defect of the anterior midline scalp with involvement of the frontal bone as documented by a computed tomography (CT) scan. The brain was normal on CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging. We present a review of the 23 published cases with this syndrome. Our patient illustrates the importance of investigating for underlying ocular and central nervous system pathology whenever midline scalp defects are present.

The maxilla and mandible give the face its proportions and equilibrium, while remaining indissociable from the skull. The harmony of these structures is established according to two planes of reference: the base of the skull in a relationship of cranio-facial interdependence, the dental arch making the occlusal relationship a decisive factor in the concept of facial equilibrium. This occlusal obligation, criterion of normality and stability, confers all of the originality of orthognatic surgery, which must also take into account the periods of cranio-facial growth and oro-facial functions. INTRODUCTION: Fronto-metaphyseal dysplasia (FMD), also called Gorlin-Cohen syndrome, is a rare syndrome initially described in 1969 by Gorlin and Cohen. Patients present skeletal dysplasia, craniofacial malformations and digit abnormalities. Craniofacial phenotype of FMD is characterized by supraorbital hyperostosis, hypertelorism, down-slanting palpebral fissures, broad nasal bridge and micrognathia. Here, we report the first adult case of craniofacial reconstruction with frontal cranioplasty in a patient with FMD.
OBSERVATION: A 21-year-old male patient presented with aesthetic requests rel

Craniofacial development consists of a highly complex sequence of the orchestrated growth and fusion of facial processes. It is also known that craniofacial abnormalities can be detected in 1/3 of all patients with congenital diseases. Within the various craniofacial abnormalities, orofacial clefting is one of the most common phenotypic outcomes associated with retarded facial growth or fusion. Cleft lip is one of the representative and frequently encountered conditions in the spectrum of orofacial clefting. Despite various mechanisms or signaling pathways that have been proposed to be the cau

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), also known as Scheuthauer Marie-Sainton Syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder, characterized by general retardation in bone ossification, hypoplastic clavicles and various craniofacial and dental abnormalities. Early diagnosis of CCD can be difficult, because the majority of craniofacial abnormalities become obvious only during adolescence. We present a rare case of CCD with neonatal manifestation and would like to promote the awareness of this rare disorder and the importance of early diagnosis.

A child with the 49 XXXXY syndrome is presented. Diagnosis was possible early in life, because of craniofacial anomalies and congenital cardiac malformations. The main symptoms are growth retardation, craniofacial abnormalities, hypogonadism, frequent bone lesions and severe mental retardation.

Little is written about the spectrum of late radiation-induced craniofacial abnormalities and the guidelines for treating these abnormalities. The clinical records of 13 patients (eight males and five females) who received childhood craniofacial radiation between birth and 11 years of age and who subsequently had reconstructive surgery were reviewed. Eleven patients had their irradiation at the age from 1 to 5 years. The other two patients received their treatment at a relatively older age (9 and 11 years). Their deformities ranged from isolated soft-tissue deficiency with no or minimal bony d

Many of the human skeletal dysplasias are accompanied by significant alterations in craniofacial growth. Several specific disorders have been discussed which show the effects of endochondral and membranous defects in the craniofacial complex. The craniofacial and other skeletal abnormalities observed in the skeletal dysplasias may indicate the sites and timing of the primary defects and provide direction to investigative efforts. In addition, a careful review of known pathogenetic and histomorphologic mechanisms in the skeletal dysplasias can provide valuable clues to the complex interactions

Given the multiple permutations in craniofacial malformations, classification of median craniofacial dysplasia or midline Tessier no. 0 to 14 clefts has been difficult and disjointed. In this review, the authors present a summary of normal embryology, prior terminology, and their proposed new classification system. Median craniofacial dysplasia has tissue agenesis and holoprosencephaly at one end (the hypoplasias), frontonasal hyperplasia and excessive tissue (the hyperplasias) at the other end, and abnormal splitting or clefting and normal tissue volume (dysraphia) occupying the middle portio

BACKGROUND: PHACE (posterior fossa defects, haemangioma, arterial anomalies, coarctation of the aorta and cardiac defects, eye abnormalities) syndrome describes a constellation of abnormalities that can occur in association with segmental craniofacial infantile haemangioma.
OBJECTIVE: To report the spectrum of clinical and imaging abnormalities seen in a cohort of children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the clinical and imaging records of all patients diagnosed with PHACE syndrome between 1998 and 2009 was performed. Information sought included patient demographics, cranio

An understanding of normal and abnormal postnatal skeletal changes can aid in the prevention, early recognition and proper surgical treatment of craniofacial deformities. Research findings may have important implications and applications in relation not only to the basic problem of change of bone form but also to the clinical problems of craniofacial operations. Precise analogies, however, should not be made between animals and human beings. Change of the craniofacial skeleton, a three-dimensional mosaic of bones and cavities, is a result of the synchronous co-ordination of the differential ac

OBJECTIVE: Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by aneurysms of the aorta, aortic branches, and intracranial arteries; skeletal and cutaneous abnormalities; and craniofacial malformations. Previous authors have reported that higher craniofacial severity index (CFI) scores, which indicate more severe craniofacial abnormalities, correlate with the severity of aortic aneurysm pathology. However, the association between syndromic features and the formation of intracranial aneurysms in LDS patients has yet to be determined. In this study, the authors evalu

Craniofacial development is characterized by reciprocal interactions between neural crest cells and neighboring cell populations of ectodermal, endodermal and mesodermal origin. Various genetic pathways play critical roles in coordinating the development of cranial structures by modulating the growth, survival and differentiation of neural crest cells. However, the regulation of these pathways, particularly at the epigenomic level, remains poorly understood. Using murine genetics, we show that neural crest cells exhibit a requirement for the class I histone deacetylase Hdac3 during craniofacia

Roberts syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by symmetrical reductive limb malformation and craniofacial abnormalities. It is caused by mutation in the "Establishment of cohesion 1 homolog 2" genes, resulting in the loss of acetyltransferase activities and manifesting as premature centromere separation in metaphase chromosomes. The affected individual grows slowly during pregnancy and after birth with associated mild to severe intellectual impairment. We present a 35-year-old multiparous Nigerian lady who had emergency cesarean section at 35 weeks of gestation following abruptio p
