Indications and complications of crown halo vest placement: A review.

Crown halo vest placement remains an option for the treatment of a variety of upper and subaxial cervical spinal fractures. While the device remains a useful non-operative option for the treatment of these injuries, it has been associated with a variety of complications. This manuscript represents an up to date narrative review of the indications, complications, and complication avoidance for the placement of crown halo vests.

Clinical and quantitative analysis of patients with crowned dens syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) is a radioclinical entity defined by calcium deposition on the transverse ligament of atlas (TLA). In this study, the novel semi-quantitative diagnostic criteria for CDS to evaluate the degree of calcification on TLA by cervical CT are proposed. METHOD: From January 2010 to September 2014, 35 patients who were diagnosed with CDS by cervical CT were adopted as subjects in this study. Based on novel criteria, calcium deposition on TLA was classified into "Stage" and "Grade", to make a score, which was evaluated semi-quantitatively. The correlation between

Multidisciplinary approach in the management of a complicated crown root fracture.

BACKGROUND: This article describes the management of a complicated crown root fracture. CASE REPORT: A young patient presented with a crown root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor with an oblique subgingival fracture line. A multidisciplinary treatment approach including endodontic treatment, orthodontic extrusion, surgical extraction and intra-alveolar repositioning was used to gain sufficient crown length of the fractured maxillary incisor. The coronally repositioned maxillary left central incisor was stabilised by sutures and a resin wire splint. A resin core was built up follo

Treatment of a crown-root fracture with concomitant root fracture.

The aim of this case report was to present a treatment strategy for severely injured teeth in children and adolescents by using periodontal surgery and adhesive techniques. A 16-year-old boy presented after a severe bicycle accident. A radiograph revealed a root fracture with connective tissue healing and displacement. Clinically, a crown-root fracture as well as an uncomplicated crown fracture of the same fragment was obvious. The root canal was prepared and filled with gutta-percha to the fracture line. A full periodontal flap was performed, and the crown-root fragment was adhesively fixed.

An introduction to the implant crown with an esthetic adhesive margin (ICEAM).

UNLABELLED: This article describes a novel technique with the addition of a pressed porcelain abutment margin capable of bonding to the porcelain margin of an implant crown restoration. This allows for supragingival margin placement, reduces the potential effect of excess cement-induced peri-implant disease, and provides a controlled environment for the bonding process. Another advantage is the matching esthetics of the crown and supporting abutment, which in the event gingival recession occurs, the restoration appears as a longer tooth without the risk of exposing an underlying abutment margi

A novel mutation in the AMELX gene and multiple crown resorptions.

Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders with regard to genetic aetiology and clinical phenotype and affects tooth enamel with no other non-oral syndromic conditions. X-linked AI is caused by mutations in the amelogenin (AMELX) gene, the only AI candidate gene located on the X chromosome. To date, 15 mutations in the AMELX gene have been found to cause AI. We identified a proband with generalized hypoplastic enamel and unusual multiple crown resorption in premolars and molars. Pedigree analysis suggested an X-linked hereditary pattern. We performed mutational

Biologic width and crown lengthening: case reports and review.

The biologic width includes both the connective tissue attachment and the junctional epithelium and has a mean dimension of approximately 2 mm. Invading the biologic width with a restoration can result in localized crestal bone loss, gingival recession, localized gingival hyperplasia, or a combination of these three. When restoring teeth that have subgingival caries or fractures below the gingival attachment, a clinical crown-lengthening procedure is needed to establish the biologic width. This article presents three case reports that utilized crown-lengthening procedures.

[Esthetic repair of crown margins with composite. A case report].

Gingival recessions can cause severe aesthetical problems, especially when associated with the exposure of the margin of crown or bridge restorations. When complete root coverage can not be achieved by periodontal surgery techniques, prosthetic restorations are usually replaced to improve the aesthetic situation. This clinical report describes the application of a composite repair filling as an alternative technique to correct the restoration margin and cover the exposed root surface. From the published literature it is known that metallic and ceramic surfaces can be repaired adhesively using

Retrofitting technique for a crown or abutment following coronal fracture.

The fracture of tooth structure and/or restorative material within a crown or fixed partial denture abutment poses a restorative challenge. Depending upon the severity of the fracture and health of the tooth or teeth involved, the restoration often can be re-cemented, restoring the tooth to a serviceable condition. This article describes a technique that provides a safe and efficient means of restoring the fractured tooth, thereby overcoming a major obstacle to the conventional recementation process. An application of the technique also is described.

Pseudogout showing meningoencephalitic symptoms: crowned dens syndrome.

We report a 70-year-old man who presented symptoms resembling those of meningoencephalitis and who was subsequently diagnosed as having a crowned dens syndrome. The patient exhibited severe neck pains, headache, high fever and a pain in his knee joints together with symptoms of the central nervous system. The patient's cerebrospinal fluid was almost clear and showed no sign of viral infection. An analysis of the synovial fluid in the right knee joint revealed typical calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystal deposition and a diagnosis of pseudogout was therefore made. A tomographic examination o

Taphonomic aspects of crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys.

This study provides a taphonomic analysis of prey accumulations of crowned hawk-eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) from Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, collected over 37 months from below nests of two eagle pairs. Crowned hawk-eagles are powerful predators capable of killing animals much larger than themselves, and are significant predators of cercopithecoid monkeys in forest habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa. At Ngogo, 81% of the individuals in the kill sample are monkeys. Redtail monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius) are particularly well represented in the sample, making up 66% of monkey

Histopathological evaluation of the dental pulps in crown-fractured teeth.

Trauma is a common cause of pulpal damage. In traumatic injuries, the first priority is to protect the vitality of pulps. But the time between the trauma and treatment must be short to preserve vital, noninflamed pulps. The aim of this study was to investigate the histopathological changes in pulpal tissues at different time periods after crown fractures. Twenty-three teeth with enamel and dentin fractures, with and without pulp exposure were evaluated. The reasons for seeking dental treatment were aesthetic consideration, pain, or discomfort. The extirpated pulps were histologically prepared

Crown-root fracture of lower molar--restorative procedures.

Endodontically treated teeth may undergo crown, crown-root, or root fractures. The treatment of fractured teeth can be complicated, sometimes because of difficulties with the final restoration. This case report describes a case of crown-root fracture of a left lower first molar in which endodontic treatment and rapid orthodontic eruption of the tooth made a good prosthetic restoration possible.

Crowned dens syndrome: a manifestation of hydroxy-apatite rheumatism.

Crowned dens syndrome is defined as an association of acute cervical pain and calcifications in the peri-odontoid space. The authors report one case of this rare localization of hydroxy-apatite rheumatism and review 12 similar cases in the literature. This disease affects only adult females. Patients present with inflammatory signs, can be treated with non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and recover without sequela. Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition can also lead to this syndrome. Other perioodontoid calcifications and ossifications, usually asymptomatic, appear only as a radiological

"Crown of thorns" single pass lead--clinical results.

Twenty-four patients have been treated for periods of up to two years (mean 14 months) with this single pass electrode for physiological pacing. Manufacturing refinements now allow percutaneous insertion into the subclavian vein. Pacing thresholds and sensing signals from both atrium and ventricle have remained satisfactory for a wide variety of different physiological pacemakers. No complications specifically related to the lead have occurred in a total of 277 patient months. We conclude that this single pass electrode is suitable for long-term implantation and can provide physiological pacin
