Preparing for exclusion: The hidden curriculum of success in medical student guidebooks.

Despite decades of diversification efforts, U.S. medical school matriculants remain predominantly white, wealthy, and able-bodied, with fewer than 25% from under-represented minority backgrounds. While medical school application guidebooks claim to democratize access by demystifying the competitive admissions process, our content analysis of 38 such guides reveals how they paradoxically reinforce existing barriers to entry. Our examination shows how these guidebooks, in making admissions processes more transparent and explicit, simultaneously transmit subtle and implicit forms of professional

Beyond the Incision: A Palliative Care Curriculum for General Surgery Residents.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical palliative care (PC) is an essential component of comprehensive, high quality surgical care. Formalized surgical PC education is absent despite a call to action by the American College of Surgeons. We aimed to assess the PC educational needs of general surgery residents and to implement a resident-led surgical palliative care curriculum. DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A needs and knowledge assessment was performed with general surgery residents from a single program at an academic tertiary care health center. In response to this evaluation, a resident-led curriculum was then

Developing a male-specific counselling curriculum for HIV treatment in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Men living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa have sub-optimal engagement in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs. Generic ART counselling in Malawi does not meet men's needs. METHODS: We developed a male-specific ART counselling curriculum, adapted from the Malawi Ministry of Health curriculum, based on literature review of men's needs and motivations for treatment. We piloted the curriculum with men in six communities, with focus group discussions to assess knowledge of ART, motivators and barriers to care, and perceptions of the male-specific curriculum (n=85). We analysed data in

Disaster Preparedness and Safety Curriculum for Early Childhood Education in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is located within the Asia-Pacific Ring of Fire, so natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, and landslides are common. Preparedness is essential to prevent many casualties due to various disasters. PROBLEM: The Aceh, Indonesia earthquake and tsunami in 2004 was one of the most devastating disasters since the 1990s. Some of the victims were children. This is because there was no pattern of preparedness in dealing with disasters when the incident took place; even the word tsunami was not familiar in Indonesia at that time. Thus, the pre

Novel Integration of a Health Equity Immersion Curriculum in Medical Training.

Health disparities education is an integral and required part of medical professional training, and yet existing curricula often fail to effectively denaturalize injustice or empower learners to advocate for change. We discuss a novel collaborative intervention that weds the health humanities to the field of health equity. We draw from the health humanities an intentional focus retraining provider imaginations by centering patient narratives; from the field of health equity, we draw the linkage between stigmatized social identities and health disparities. We describe a longitudinal health equi

Otolaryngology Simulation Curriculum Development and Evaluation for Medical Education in Rwanda.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a new low-cost otolaryngology simulation training curriculum for medical students in Rwanda. Given the limited access to hands-on training and equipment in low-middle-income countries, building confidence in performing basic otolaryngology skills is vital for all medical students, especially where all graduates initially serve in primary care before specializing. STUDY DESIGN: Preintervention and postintervention assessments of simulation training. SETTING: Conducted at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda

Development and Implementation of a Pediatric Pulmonary-Focused Active Learning Curriculum.

INTRODUCTION: During the pediatric pulmonary rotation, trainees reported that while the clinical experience was robust, they desired more structured didactic sessions. Self-paced online modules can be an alternative but equally effective teaching tool. Multiple studies demonstrate the benefits of e-learning in medical education. METHODS: Four interactive, case-based, e-learning modules on asthma, chronic cough, tracheostomy, and obstructive sleep apnea were created and piloted to pediatric residents and medical students in the pediatric pulmonology elective at the University of California, Sa

Curriculum and Competency Evaluation in Respiratory Therapy Entry-to-Practice Programs.

BACKGROUND: Essential skills for respiratory therapists extend beyond the traditional scope of therapy. Respiratory therapists are expected to communicate effectively, deliver bedside education, and practice within interprofessional teams. Respiratory therapy entry-to-practice program accreditation standards require evaluation of student competence in communication and interprofessional practice. This study aimed to determine if entry into practice programs include curriculum and competency evaluation for oral communication, patient education, telehealth, and interprofessional activities. Performance and Interpretation of Sonography in the Practice of Nephrology: Core Curriculum 2024.

Ultrasonography is increasingly being performed by clinicians at the point of care, and nephrologists are no exception. This Core Curriculum illustrates how ultrasonography can be incorporated into clinical decision making across the spectrum of kidney disease to optimize the care nephrologists provide to patients. Sonography is valuable in outpatient and inpatient settings for the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic kidney disease, evaluation of cystic disease, urinary obstruction, pain, hematuria, proteinuria, assessment of volume status, and in providing guidance for kidney biopsy

Kidney Dysfunction in the Setting of Liver Failure: Core Curriculum 2024.

Individuals with liver disease are susceptible to pathophysiological derangements that lead to kidney dysfunction. Patients with advanced cirrhosis and acute liver failure (ALF) are at risk of developing acute kidney injury (AKI). Hepatorenal syndrome type 1 (HRS-1, also called HRS-AKI) constitutes a form of AKI unique to the state of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Although HRS-1 is a condition primarily characterized by marked renal vasoconstriction and kidney hypoperfusion, other pathogenic processes, such as acute tubular injury and renal vein congestion, can overlap and further complic

Teaching research group leaders' perceptions of their engagement in curriculum leadership.

Understanding how teacher leaders are engaged in curriculum affairs is critical with the implementation of instructional decentralization. The current study adopts a qualitative approach to investigate Teaching Research Group (TRG) leaders' involvement in curriculum leadership (CL) in the Chinese context. It explores the conceptions of TRG leaders by interviewing 20 of them, observing four meetings held by TRG leaders, and collecting 10 extracts from appraisal summaries of TRG leaders in secondary schools in China. Drawing on the findings, this paper examines the characteristics of TRG leader'

Principles of Immunosuppression in the Management of Kidney Disease: Core Curriculum 2022.

The management of immunosuppression utilized in glomerular diseases requires highly nuanced care. Timely recognition and management of these disorders is essential to mitigate the extent of kidney damage. This involves being cognizant of the various classes of immunosuppression, which includes alkylating agents, antimetabolites, calcineurin inhibitors, anti-CD20 therapy, complement inhibitors, corticosteroids, and intravenous immunoglobulin. The mechanisms of action of these drugs, along with associated pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, facets of monitoring, and adverse effects are import

Implementation and evaluation of a curriculum on the assessment and treatment of disruptive behaviour disorders.

Disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs)-which can include or be comorbid with disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder-are commonly seen in paediatric practice. Given increases in the prescribing of atypical antipsychotics for children and youth, it is imperative that paediatric trainees in Canada receive adequate education on the optimal treatment of DBDs. We describe the development, dissemination, and evaluation of a novel paediatric resident curriculum for the assessment and treatmen

The Role of the Nephrologist in Management of Poisoning and Intoxication: Core Curriculum 2022.

Poisoning is a common problem in the United States. Acid-base disturbances, electrolyte derangements, or acute kidney injury result from severe poisoning from toxic alcohols, salicylates, metformin, and acetaminophen. Lithium is highly sensitive to small changes in kidney function. These poisonings and drug overdoses often require the nephrologist's expertise in diagnosis and treatment, which may require correction of acidosis, administration of selective enzyme inhibitors, or timely hemodialysis. The clinical and laboratory abnormalities associated with the poisonings and drug overdoses can d

Technical Characteristics of Curriculum-Based Measurement With Students Who Are Deaf.

This study compared the reliability and validity of student scores from paper-pencil and e-based assessments using the "maze" and "silent reading fluency" (SRF) tasks. Forty students who were deaf and hard of hearing and reading between the second and fifth grade reading levels and their teachers (n = 21) participated. For maze, alternate form reliability coefficients obtained from correct scores and correct scores adjusted for guessing ranged from r = .61 to .84 (ps < .01); criterion-related validity coefficients ranged from r = .33 to .67 (most ps < .01). For SRF, reliability coefficients ob

Undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacovigilance education: A proposal for appropriate curriculum content.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are common, often preventable, and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Pharmacovigilance (PV) involves detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problem. Education of healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in drug prescription, dispensing and administration is essential to help prevent and mitigate both ADRs and medication errors and has to be focused on 3 pivotal aspects: •Awareness: All medicines can produce adverse effects. ADRs should always be considered as part of the differential diagnosis if

An examination of a Group Curriculum for parents of young children with disruptive behavior.

This study examined effectiveness of a Group Curriculum (GC) for parents of 3- to 6- year-old children with disruptive behavior. The curriculum is based on the book Parenting the Strong-Willed Child. A total of 39 parents were randomly assigned to the GC condition or a wait-list control condition. Assessments occurred at baseline, postintervention (6 weeks after baseline), and 2-month follow-up. Findings indicated that the GC condition was associated with lower levels of child problem behavior and improved parenting at postintervention relative to the control condition. Parents were also satis

Integrating occupational therapy services in a kindergarten curriculum: a look at the outcomes.

PURPOSE: We measured fine motor and emergent literacy outcomes in kindergarteners enrolled in two integrated kindergarten classrooms. The students received fully integrated occupational therapy services. Most occupational therapy services focused on planning and teacher consultation versus direct intervention. METHOD: A one-group pretest-posttest descriptive design was used to measure occupational therapy and emergent literacy outcomes in a convenience sample of 37 kindergarten-age children with and without disabilities. Four fine motor and two emergent literacy assessments were administered
