Upper extremity disability is associated with pain intensity and grip strength in women with bilateral idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The upper extremity disability in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is related to dysfunction due to the median nerve damage. However, there is no report on which dysfunctions affect the upper extremity disability. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate which clinical factors influence upper extremity disability in women with CTS. METHODS: We analyzed 60 hands of women with bilateral idiopathic CTS. Upper extremity disability was assessed using Hand10, a validated and self-administered tool. Pain intensity was measured using the Japanese version of the Short-Form McGil

[Creation and validation of the Ukrainian version of the Cardiff Acne Disability Index].

Original version of the Cardiff Acne Disability Index was translated into Ukrainian by two independent forward translators and then back-translated into English by two other independent translators. The probe technique for pre-testing was used. Retest reliability, discriminant and convergent validity and over time sensitivity were checked. The results of the Cardiff Acne Disability Index confirmed negative impact of acne on quality of life of Ukrainian patients.

The association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol outcomes: A systematic review.

Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for death and disability, disproportionately harming disadvantaged groups. While a positive association between interpersonal discrimination and alcohol use is established, structural discrimination's impact remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review of the association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol consumption or related health outcomes. We searched four databases and grey literature, identifying 25 eligible studies, which considered racism (n = 11), sexism (n = 7), heterosexism (n = 4), and intersectional discrimina

Increasing positive attitudes toward individuals with disabilities through community service learning.

Providing equal-status contact between those with and without disabilities can improve attitudes and reduce discrimination toward individuals with disabilities. This study investigated community service learning as a means by which to provide college students with equal-status contact with individuals with disabilities and increase their positive attitudes toward those with disabilities. A total of 166 college students in one university in the United States enrolled in an Introduction to Disability course received content on disability in society and participated in community service involving

Native and novel language prosodic sensitivity in English-speaking children with and without dyslexia.

Children with reading disability and normal reading development were compared in their ability to discriminate native (English) and novel language (Mandarin) from nonlinguistic sounds. Children's preference for native versus novel language sounds and for disyllables containing dominant trochaic versus non-dominant iambic stress patterns was also assessed. Participants included second and third grade monolingual native English speakers with reading disability (N = 18) and normal reading development (N = 18). Children selected from pairs of novel, native, and nonlinguistic sounds that was more l

Being black in a white skin: Beliefs and stereotypes around albinism at a South African university.

Background: Partly because of the legacy of apartheid, and despite being a constitutional democracy, South Africa continues to be a deeply divided society, particularly along racial lines. In this context many people with albinism do not fit neatly into black and white categories and are likely to experience social discrimination and marginalisation. Objectives: The study endeavoured to explore the beliefs and practices regarding albinism within a South African university, and the availability of support services. Method: The research was located within an interpretive qualitative paradigm and

Visual-perceptual and phonological factors in the acquisition of literacy among children with congenital developmental coordination disorder.

Much research has shown that children with congenital developmental coordination disorder (CDCD) have marked impairments in the perception of visual-spatial information, a deficit which has been assumed to be causally related to difficulties that many CDCD children experience when learning to read and spell. However, current research in reading disability suggests that poor reading is mainly related to difficulties with the processing of phonological information or with metaphonological ability, not to visual-perceptual deficits. This study aimed to explore the relationship between reading ach

Accurately measuring the quality and effectiveness of lumbar surgery in registry efforts: determining the most valid and responsive instruments.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Prospective registries have emerged as a feasible way to capture real-world care across large patient populations. However, the proven validity of more robust and cumbersome patient-reported outcomes instruments (PROis) must be balanced with what is feasible to apply in large-scale registry efforts. PURPOSE: To determine the relative validity and responsiveness of common PROis in accurately determining effectiveness of lumbar fusion for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis in registry efforts. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. PATIENT SAMPLE: Fifty-eight patients

Age-related differences in psychometric properties of World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0): a retrospective analysis.

The aim of this study was to detect a possible age-related differential item functioning (DIF) of the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) among people with musculoskeletal disorders. This was a cross-sectional study of 1739 consecutive patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain at a university clinic. Difficulty and discrimination parameters were calculated for each of 12 items of the WHODAS 2.0 using item response theory. The presence of DIF was assessed both numerically and graphically. When considering differences in both difficulty and discrimination,

Discrimination against adolescents with chronic diseases: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Discrimination is a social construct that discredits individuals based on attributes deemed socially undesirable. Adolescence is a period of transition where individuals acquire skills, values, and experiences that prepare them for adulthood. Adverse experiences during adolescence could particularly affect these acquisitions. For adolescents, discrimination is an experience that can lead to social and health consequences. Our hypothesis is that adolescents with chronic disease are more likely to be exposed to discrimination than their healthy peers. This systematic review aimed to

How adults with cerebral palsy successfully confront and cope with ableism: a peer-led research project.

PURPOSE: This study focused on how adults with cerebral palsy successfully confronted ableism during encounters with others and successfully coped with ableism in general. METHODS: Adults with cerebral palsy led this critical participatory action research project, in which ten adults with cerebral palsy shared their experiences (via an online survey or interview) of successfully confronting ableism (situations, actions taken, and outcomes) and coping with ableism. RESULTS: Participants had difficulty recalling successful confrontations due to failing to recognise ableism, ignoring it, or bei

Analysis of free-time contingencies as positive versus negative reinforcement.

Providing a short break contingent on completed work may increase responding through positive reinforcement (e.g., access to preferred activities) or negative reinforcement (e.g., escape form work). In this investigation, three analyses conducted with a boy with profound mental retardation showed that (a) a 20-s break increased responding more than a positive reinforcer (cola) did, and (b) the reinforcing effect of a 20-s break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break were affected by the availability of positive reinforcers during the break.

Prompting and stimulus shaping procedures for teaching visual-motor skills to retarded children.

Stimulus shaping appears to be a highly successful way to teach discrimination skills. In stimulus shaping, the topographical configuration of the stimuli is gradually changed over trials so that discrimination is at first easy, and then gradually more difficult. Stimulus shaping procedures might also be effective for training visual-motor tasks. Two experiments were conducted to assess the relative effectiveness of stimulus shaping and "traditional" prompting procedures. Pegboard skills were trained in Experiment 1. In Experiment 2 a self-care skill was trained, in which children learned to h

The Association Between the Occurrence of Sensory Integration Disorders, Depression, and Chronic Fatigue in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease associated not only with motor dysfunction but also with non-motor symptoms such as depression and MS-related fatigue (MSRF). Sensory integration disorders (SID) in MS remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the association between SID and depression, MSRF, disability level, disease duration, and disease activity in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). Methods: A total of 205 patients with RRMS were assessed using the Daniel Travis sensory integration questionnaire, Beck Depression Invent

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 expands employment opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary purpose of the ADA is the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within their communities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government agencies. The person described in this report encountered some of this discrimination. He successfully obtained paid community-integrated employment only after overcoming major obstacles and barriers, the greatest being transportation. In our highly mobile society, reliable transportation is essential for the acq

Invisible battles: the disability paradox and workplace experiences of individuals with lupus.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), experience complex interplay between fatigue, mental health challenges, and workplace inclusion. SLE-related fatigue extends beyond physical exhaustion, encompassing cognitive and emotional depletion, while anxiety and depression further compound its effects. By integrating Paradox Theory and the Social Model of Disability, this research conceptualizes how competing workplace demands and structural barriers contribute to employment instability and reinforce exclusion. METHODS: A qualitative research design is employed, dr
