RESULTS: Major themes that emerged were: sexual knowledge and sou

Mortality risk associated with disability: a population-based record linkage study.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the association between mortality and disability and quantified the effect of disability-associated risk factors. METHODS: We linked data from cross-sectional health surveys in the Netherlands to the population registry to create a large data set comprising baseline covariates and an indicator of death. We used Cox regression models to estimate the hazard ratio of disability on mortality. RESULTS: Among men, the unadjusted hazard ratio for activities of daily living, mobility, or mild disability defined by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development at

Refractive errors and ocular findings in children with intellectual disability: a controlled study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular findings and refractive errors in children with intellectual disability and in controls of average intellectual development of similar socioeconomic backgrounds. METHODS: The study was conducted at Diskapi Children's Hospital in Ankara, Turkey: 724 subjects with intellectual disability and 151 control subjects were evaluated. The subjects with intellectual disability were subdivided into mild (IQ 50-69, n = 490), moderate (IQ 35-49, n = 164), and severe (IQ <34, n = 70) groups, and syndromic (n = 138) versus nonsyndromic (n = 586) disability. Progression of motor impairment and disability in Parkinson disease: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk factors and the rate of progression of motor symptoms and disability in a population-based cohort of patients with Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS: In all, 232 patients with PD, derived from a community-based prevalence study, were followed prospectively over an 8-year period. Follow-up examinations were done 4 and 8 years after baseline, and 144 patients participated in at least one follow-up examination. Information on motor function and disability was obtained using the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), the Hoehn and Yahr staging, and the Schwab

Pathological study of bronchospasms/tracheomalasia in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities.

This report concerns two autopsy cases of severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) who died of bronchospasms or tracheomalasia. One case had no anatomical change in the tracheal wall except for an endotracheal granuloma, while the other showed softening of the tracheal wall. Since patients with SMID have risk factors for bronchospasms and tracheomalasia, such as gastro-esophageal reflux, aspiration, and thoracic deformities, it is important that we suspect the possibility of these conditions, when we see the respiratory distress in cases of SMID.

A naturalistic study of the use of vigabatrin, lamotrigine and gabapentin in adults with learning disabilities.

Epilepsy is a common condition in people with learning disabilities with many patients continuing to suffer from seizures despite antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment. Although the advent of newer AEDs offers hope for better treatment, there is a need to compare the efficacy of each new AED in adults with both drug-resistant epilepsy and learning disabilities. This retrospective casenote study involves the analysis of the outcome for those adults with learning disabilities treated with either vigabatrin, lamotrigine or gabapentin. The information obtained from the casenote analysis was used to b

Hereditary ataxias and paraplegias in Valle d'Aosta, Italy: a study of prevalence and disability.

INTRODUCTION: a study was conducted in the Valle d'Aosta Region, Italy, (115270 inhabitants) to determine the prevalence of hereditary ataxias (HA) and hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP), and the degree of disability they cause. METHODS: we identified all patients with suspected HA or HSP referred from 1981 to 1991 to in- and out-patient departments, EEG, EMG, and CT-scan services, and centres for the handicapped. Harding's criteria were followed for diagnosis and classification. RESULTS: at the prevalence day, 17 patients were alive, with a prevalence ratio of 14.8/100,000 population. The

Breaking bad news to parents with disabled children--a cross-cultural study.

This cross-cultural retrospective study investigates the problems parents experience when told that their child is physically and/or mentally disabled. The authors try to compare, where relevant, some of the responses of the parents from different ethnic groups. The parents of 40 randomly selected coloured, 26 white and 24 black pre-school children who were first seen at the Developmental Assessment Clinic at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa between January 1989 and December 1990 were asked to participate in this study. The final sample comprised 65 chi

Study strategies and story recall in attention deficit disorder and reading disability.

The role of metacognition and executive processes in mediating use of study skills was examined in groups of attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADD-H), normal, and non-ADD-H reading-disabled (RD) boys, matched on age and verbal IQ. On a story recall task, ADD-H boys did not differ from normals in their immediate gist recall of a story or in their recall following a study period. RD boys demonstrated inferior recall in both conditions. Study skills of the ADD-H boys were poorer than those of normal boys on all measures. They spent less time studying, expended less effort, and employ

A Longitudinal Follow-up Study of Depression, Disability, and Body Concept in Torticollis.

Changes in depression, disability, body concept, and severity of head deviation were examined in a sample of 67 patients with idiopathic torticollis, who were reassessed 2 years after taking part in an initial study (before the use of botulinum toxin injections). Over the follow-up period, torticollis was unchanged in 41·8%, had improved in 26·9% and deteriorated in 31·3% of cases. The overall levels of depression, disability, and body concept across the two occasions did not change. Changes in the clinical severity of torticollis over the follow-up period had a significant effect on psycholog

Aging, long-distance running, and the development of musculoskeletal disability. A controlled study.

Four hundred ninety-eight long-distance runners aged 50 to 72 years were compared with 365 community control subjects to examine associations of repetitive, long-term physical impact (running) with musculoskeletal disability and medical service utilization in a cross-section study. Runners had less physical disability than age-matched control subjects (p less than 0.01) and maintained more functional capacity (p less than 0.001) as measured by a modified Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index. Runners sought medical services less often, but one third of the visits that they did make

Learning disabilities with communicative disorders as related handicaps: a two-year study.

This study presents a demographic profile of learning-disabilities children with communicative disorders as related handicaps, and attempts to determine the analytical impact of including these children with children manifesting communicative disorders as primary handicaps. The purpose of this investigation emerged as a result of problems stemming from current definitions of learning disabilities as they relate to speech--language pathology and audiology, and from unavailable data on communicative disorders as related handicaps. The findings indicate that 0.35% of the school population were le

Longitudinal study of knee pain amongst workers in the Cultural and Psychosocial Influences on Disability (CUPID) study.

BACKGROUND: Knee pain is common in the general population, increasingly so with age. It causes substantial disability which can lead to premature exit from the workforce. Current epidemiological data on knee pain prevalence in working-age populations are limited, particularly concerning the interplay of occupational, psychosocial, and cultural factors. To address this, in a large group of workers, we examined the prevalence of knee pain longitudinally, its relationship with pain at other sites and personal and occupational risk factors for pain at follow-up. METHODS: Data came from the CUPID

The CUPID (Cultural and Psychosocial Influences on Disability) study: methods of data collection and characteristics of study sample.

BACKGROUND: The CUPID (Cultural and Psychosocial Influences on Disability) study was established to explore the hypothesis that common musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and associated disability are importantly influenced by culturally determined health beliefs and expectations. This paper describes the methods of data collection and various characteristics of the study sample. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A standardised questionnaire covering musculoskeletal symptoms, disability and potential risk factors, was used to collect information from 47 samples of nurses, office workers, and other (mo
