Feasibility of automatic knee kinematic feature learning for discriminating between individuals with and without a history of an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that often develops following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, even following surgical reconstruction (ACLr). This research evaluated whether biomechanical biomarkers, derived from wearable sensors, could differentiate people with an ACLr, who are at risk of early knee osteoarthritis, from healthy controls. METHODS: Twelve participants with an ACLr and 19 controls participated. Continuous three-dimensional (3D) knee kinematics were captured using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors during sequential daily living ta

Machine Learning Analysis in Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging for Discriminating Pediatric Posterior Fossa Tumors: A Repeatability and Accuracy Pilot Study.

Background and purpose: Differentiating pediatric posterior fossa (PF) tumors such as medulloblastoma (MB), ependymoma (EP), and pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) remains relevant, because of important treatment and prognostic implications. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) has not yet been investigated for discrimination of pediatric PF tumors. Estimating diffusion values from whole-tumor-based (VOI) segmentations may improve diffusion measurement repeatability compared to conventional region-of-interest (ROI) approaches. Our purpose was to compare repeatability between ROI and VOI DKI-derived diffus

Machine learning models based on clinical indices and cardiotocographic features for discriminating asphyxia fetuses-Porto retrospective intrapartum study.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal asphyxia is one of the most frequent causes of neonatal mortality, affecting approximately four million newborns worldwide each year and causing the death of one million individuals. One of the main reasons for these high incidences is the lack of consensual methods of early diagnosis for this pathology. Estimating risk-appropriate health care for mother and baby is essential for increasing the quality of the health care system. Thus, it is necessary to investigate models that improve the prediction of perinatal asphyxia. Access to the cardiotocographic signals (CTGs) i

Discriminating and understanding brain states in children with epileptic spasms using deep learning and graph metrics analysis of brain connectivity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is a brain disorder consisting of abnormal electrical discharges of neurons resulting in epileptic seizures. The nature and spatial distribution of these electrical signals make epilepsy a field for the analysis of brain connectivity using artificial intelligence and network analysis techniques since their study requires large amounts of data over large spatial and temporal scales. For example, to discriminate states that would otherwise be indistinguishable from the human eye. This paper aims to identify the different brain states that appear concerning the

D4Z4 Methylation Levels Combined with a Machine Learning Pipeline Highlight Single CpG Sites as Discriminating Biomarkers for FSHD Patients.

The study describes a protocol for methylation analysis integrated with Machine Learning (ML) algorithms developed to classify Facio-Scapulo-Humeral Dystrophy (FSHD) subjects. The DNA methylation levels of two D4Z4 regions (DR1 and DUX4-PAS) were assessed by an in-house protocol based on bisulfite sequencing and capillary electrophoresis, followed by statistical and ML analyses. The study involved two independent cohorts, namely a training group of 133 patients with clinical signs of FSHD and 150 healthy controls (CTRL) and a testing set of 27 FSHD patients and 25 CTRL. As expected, FSHD patie

Using machine learning and an electronic tongue for discriminating saliva samples from oral cavity cancer patients and healthy individuals.

The diagnosis of cancer and other diseases using data from non-specific sensors - such as the electronic tongues (e-tongues) - is challenging owing to the lack of selectivity, in addition to the variability of biological samples. In this study, we demonstrate that impedance data obtained with an e-tongue in saliva samples can be used to diagnose cancer in the mouth. Data taken with a single-response microfluidic e-tongue applied to the saliva of 27 individuals were treated with multidimensional projection techniques and non-supervised and supervised machine learning algorithms. The distinction

Diagnostic accuracy of deep-learning with anomaly detection for a small amount of imbalanced data: discriminating malignant parotid tumors in MRI.

We hypothesized that, in discrimination between benign and malignant parotid gland tumors, high diagnostic accuracy could be obtained with a small amount of imbalanced data when anomaly detection (AD) was combined with deep leaning (DL) model and the L2-constrained softmax loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the proposed method was more accurate than other commonly used DL or AD methods. Magnetic resonance (MR) images of 245 parotid tumors (22.5% malignant) were retrospectively collected. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the proposed method (VGG16-based DL and AD) an

Machine learning-enhanced plasma proteomics discriminates pancreatic cancer-associated diabetes from type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is frequently preceded by new-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM), yet differentiating PDAC-associated DM from type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains clinically challenging. We investigated whether plasma proteomic profiling combined with machine learning could discriminate these conditions. Plasma samples from individuals with PDAC (with and without DM), long-standing T2D, and controls were analyzed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Spectral features were processed through a nested cross-validation framework to prevent data leakage, and model interpretability was explo

Discriminative Plasma Lipidomic Signatures of Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Alzheimer's Disease: A Targeted Mass Spectrometry and Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) exhibits a more aggressive progression and poorer prognosis than Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet clinical differentiation remains challenging. Dysregulated lipid metabolism, implicated in α-synuclein aggregation and neuroinflammation, may offer specific biomarkers for distinguishing DLB and AD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study implemented targeted lipidomic profiling to comprehensively characterize plasma lipidomes in a cohort comprising 50 DLB patients and 56 AD patients. Limited discriminative performance of endoscopic deep learning for Helicobacter pylori status assessment in gastric cancer patients: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Helicobacter pylori infection is a major risk factor for gastric cancer, but evidence for predicting H. pylori status from endoscopic images in patients with established gastric cancer remains limited. We evaluated the performance of endoscopic image-based classification models for H. pylori status in a retrospective gastric cancer cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively collected 602 endoscopic images from 337 patients with gastric cancer treated at a tertiary cancer center. After preprocessing and quality control, 576 images from 329 patients were retained for model development and

Application of deep learning on mammographies to discriminate between low and high-risk DCIS for patient participation in active surveillance trials.

BACKGROUND: Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) can progress to invasive breast cancer, but most DCIS lesions never will. Therefore, four clinical trials (COMET, LORIS, LORETTA, AND LORD) test whether active surveillance for women with low-risk Ductal carcinoma In Situ is safe (E. S. TT@MHA: A machine learning-based webpage tool for discriminating thalassemia trait from microcytic hypochromic anemia patients.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and thalassemia trait (TT) are the most common causes of microcytic hypochromic anemia (MHA) and are endemic in lower resource settings and rural areas with poor medical infrastructure. Accurate discrimination between IDA and TT is an essential issue for MHA patients. Although various discriminant formulas have been reported, distinguishing between IDA and TT is still a challenging problem due to the diversity of anemic populations. METHODS: We retrospectively collected laboratory data from 798 MHA patients. High proportions of α-TT (43.33 %) and TT co

A deep-learning-based workflow to assess taxonomic affinity of hominid teeth with a test on discriminating Pongo and Homo upper molars.

OBJECTIVES: Convolutional neural network (CNN) is a state-of-art deep learning (DL) method with superior performance in image classification. Here, a CNN-based workflow is proposed to discriminate hominid teeth. Our hope is that this method could help confirm otherwise questionable records of Homo from Pleistocene deposits where there is a standing risk of mis-attributing molars of Pongo to Homo. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A two-step workflow was designed. The first step is converting the enamel-dentine junction (EDJ) into EDJ card, that is, a two-dimensional image conversion of the three-dimensi

Further analysis of the effects of immunotoxic lesions of the basal nucleus of Meynert reveals substantial impairment on visual discrimination learning in monkeys.

In this paper we undertake a combined analysis of several studies in which marmoset monkeys received immunotoxic lesions of the cortical cholinergic projections from the basal nucleus of Meynert (NBM) bilaterally and/or in combination with immunotoxic lesions of other parts of the cholinergic system or ablations of the target inferotemporal neocortical area. Analysis of the mean learning scores across all visual discriminations learning tasks for each lesion combination revealed highly significant impairments where the NBM was lesioned bilaterally or where an NBM lesion in one hemisphere was c

Machine Learning-Based Classification of BI-RADS 4 and BI-RADS 5 Microcalcifications in Mammography Combined with DCE-MRI for Malignant-Benign Discrimination.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. Early and accurate characterization of suspicious mammographic microcalcifications is essential for improving diagnostic decision-making and reducing unnecessary invasive procedures. Microcalcifications classified as BI-RADS 4 and BI-RADS 5 are clinically important radiological findings; however, differentiating benign from malignant lesions remains challenging because of overlapping morphological and distribution patterns. Aroma evolution of Anhua Qianliang tea across different storage years: Machine learning-assisted discrimination of storage stages and screening of marker volatile compounds.

Anhua Qianliang tea (QLT) is a representative compressed dark tea whose aroma quality is progressively remodeled during long-term storage, yet the volatile basis underlying this transition remains poorly understood. In this study, quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), GC × GC-QTOFMS, multivariate statistics, and machine learning were integrated to resolve the sensory evolution, volatile remodeling, and stage-related aroma markers of QLT across different storage years. Aging shifted the aroma profile of QLT from green and fresh notes in the early stage to woody, stale, and herbal characteris

Post-learning stress after a heartbeat perception training facilitates interoceptive accuracy in the heartbeat counting task, but not in the heartbeat discrimination task.

Interoceptive accuracy (IAc), assessed using the heartbeat counting task (HCT), increased after a heartbeat perception training (HBPT) and a post-learning stressor (i.e., the socially-evaluated cold pressor test; SECPT), suggesting facilitation of interoceptive perceptual learning after stress. Here we investigated whether this effect is due to undergoing HBPT or repeatedly performing the HCT, and if this effect is also observable in the heartbeat discrimination task (HDT). Healthy adults (N = 96, 80 women; 18 - 41 years; university students and staff, local community), were randomly assigned
