BACKGROUND: Paralytic ectropion increases risk for corneal injury in facial palsy patients. Although a lateral tarsal strip (LTS) provides corneal coverage through superolateral lower eyelid pull, the unopposed lateral force may result in lateral displacement of the lower eyelid punctum and overall worsening asymmetry. A tensor fascia lata (TFL) lower eyelid sling may overcome some of these limitations. This study quantitatively compares scleral show, punctum deviation, lower marginal reflex distance, and periorbital symmetry between the two techniques.
METHODS: Retrospective review was perfo

Secondary ectropion is a relatively common anatomo-functional abnormality of the lower eyelids. They can be seen in numerous clinical settings and generate disabling symptoms and even severe complications such as corneal ulceration, globe perforation, and blindness. Based on their etiology, cases of secondary ectropion are grouped into involutional, paralytic, cicatricial, and mechanical. Multiple techniques have been developed to treat specific abnormalities associated with this condition. Therefore, a comprehensive local assessment is crucial to select one or more surgical procedures for eac

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and complications of a novel surgical technique for cicatricial lower lid ectropion that uses a vertical-to-horizontal (V-to-H) rotational myocutaneous flap procedure (Tsai procedure).
METHODS: We performed the V-to-H rotational myocutaneous flap procedure on 20 eyelids in 20 patients with mild to moderate cicatricial lower lid ectropion. A vertical myocutaneous flap was created from the anterior lamella of the vertical pedicle in the lateral third of the lower eyelid. Following a horizontal relaxing incision from the base of the flap, a vertical myocutaneo

Congenital aniridia is a kind of eye disease characterized by complete or partial hypoplasia of the iris and is associated with other ocular anomalies including corneal opacity, glaucoma, and foveal hypoplasia. Heterozygous mutation of paired box 6 (PAX6) gene was identified in most cases of aniridia, with iatrogenic mutations accounting for about two-third of the cases and chromosomal rearrangements accounting for the other one-third. We report rare cases of variant aniridia, congenital iris ectropion associated with foveal hypoplasia in both a woman and her son with a mutation of PAX6 gene.

AIM: We describe the technique and our results in managing lower eyelid involutional medial ectropion using a combination of lateral tarsal strip to address horizontal eyelid laxity, and transconjunctival inferior retractor plication to address inferior retractor dehiscence.
METHODS: Patients with symptoms of epiphora or signs of medial ectropion were offered this procedure. All had the following characteristics: medial lower eyelid eversion, punctal eversion >3 mm, medial canthal tendon laxity <4 mm, significant horizontal eyelid laxity and lacrimal systems that were patent to syringing.

PURPOSE: To describe the use of a double suture and conjunctival cuts in the lateral tarsal strip (LTS) and to evaluate postsurgical outcome in patients with severe involutional ectropion.
METHODS: A prospective randomized study was conducted on 16 eyelids of 8 patients with symptomatic severe involutional ectropion. The 8 patients were between 62 and 79 years. They were distributed into 2 groups consisting of 4 patients each. The control group was treated with a conventional lateral tarsal strip (C-LTS), the second group underwent a modified lateral tarsal strip (M-LTS). The mean follow-up w

Bicycle accidents may cause typical skin defects in the maxillary area if the unprotected face of the bicyclist hits the ground. Cicatricial ectropion is a frequent result. We report on 22 patients with facial skin defects after bicycle accidents and demonstrate a new concept for early treatment of facial skin abrasions and skin defects. Transtarsal traction sutures, temporary closure of skin defects by synthetic skin, and delayed free-skin grafting can prevent cicatricial ectropion even in large skin defects extending beyond the orbital margin. The overall time for treatment is significantly

Despite significant burn treatment advances, modern multidisciplinary care, and improved survival after burns, facial burn scars remain clinically challenging. Achieving a successful reconstruction requires a comprehensive approach, entailing many advanced techniques with an emphasis on preserving function and balancing intricate aesthetic requirements. Pediatric facial burns present the same reconstructive challenges seen in adults, with additional developmental and psychologic concerns. In this paper, we describe the basic principals of facial burn care in the pediatric burn population, with

INTRODUCTION: Eye lid reconstruction followed by severe, extensive body and facial burns represents a surgical challenge due to difficulties to obtain proper, healthy skin graft, tissue ischemia and necrosis.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a reconstructive lid surgery of cicatricial bilateral lower eyelid ectropion in a case of 31-year-old man who sustained thermal injuries, affecting more than 60% of total body surface area, causing severe, deep dermal burns. Reconstruction was made using the technique of skin cantus-to-cantus incision, contracture release, orbicularis liberation and lid e

A 4½-year-old boy presented to the ophthalmology clinic with intermittent left eye (LE) redness, protrusion, and reduced LE vision. He was noticed to have multiple skin hyperpigmented lesions increasing in size and number since birth. Clinically diagnosed as neurofibromatosis (NF)-type I associated with LE glaucoma, axial myopia, and amblyopia. He was started on topical timolol eye drops, then switched his timolol to latanoprost due to parasomnia (sleep disturbances and sleepwalking), and his symptoms improved significantly within 6 weeks with controlled intraocular pressure. NF-1 is a congeni

Cicatricial ectropion can involve the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, and septum to result in chronic tearing and keratopathy. Surgery involving the orbital rim or eyelid is a common cause. Minimally invasive techniques may provide alternative options for correction, but the comparative benefit to surgery is unknown. To compare the efficacy of surgical and minimally invasive minimally invasive treatment options for cicatricial ectropion. A comprehensive literature search of Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library published from 1960 to August 2019 was performed for studies that described

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of two surgical techniques-lateral tarsal strip (canthoplasty) alone, and lateral tarsal strip with three-snip punctoplasty-in reducing epiphora arising from involutional ectropion with partial punctal stenosis.
METHODS: Fourty patients with involutional ectropion and partial stenosis of the lacrimal punctum were randomly allocated to two treatment groups. Group 1 patients received lateral tarsal strip alone with only non-invasive stenting of the punctum, and group 2 patients received tarsal strip plus three-snip punctoplasty. Subjective assessment of epiphora

Involutional ectropion is a disease in which the eyelids are everted outwards, and because the eyelids move away from the eyeballs, the ocular surface and conjunctiva are exposed causing inflammation, pain, photophobia, foreign body sensation, epiphora, and blurred vision. It is thought to be caused by horizontal and vertical laxity. Various surgical methods have reportedly been used to correct involutional ectropion. Shortening the lower eyelid retractor (LER) is an indispensable surgical operation for medial ectropion. When the LER is shortened, it is usually fixed to the lower edge of the t
