Excessive drinking and drug use during college: Prospective associations with graduate school plans and attendance.

Objective: This study examines the prospective relationship between substance use during college and two outcomes: having definite plans to attend graduate school; and, among individuals with plans, enrolling in graduate school upon college graduation. Participants:n = 980 were originally enrolled as first-time, first-year college students in an ongoing longitudinal study (August 2004 to present). Methods: Measures from personal interviews included demographics, GPA, alcohol use, alcohol abuse/dependence, and other drug use during college. Results: Fifty-four percent had definite plans to atte

Effectively Training the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Physician Workforce for Improved End-of-Life Health Care in the United States

The widening gap between the demand for palliative care services and the supply of trained palliative care professionals has resulted in considerable end-of-life distress for patients. Without formal training in palliative medicine and end-of-life symptom management, physicians in the United States are less equipped to competently address seriously ill and dying patients' medical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Recent attempts within graduate medical education training deliberately seek to prepare a critical mass of physicians as the new hospice and palliative medicine workforce in the United

Expanding recruitment to medical school: the motivations for and perceived barriers to entry of non-science entrants to a graduate-entry medical course: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Entering medical school as a graduate is an increasingly well-worn route to becoming a doctor in the UK. Recent expansion in medical school places and four-year graduate-entry (GEM) programmes will likely further increase the number of medical students with a previous degree. A growing number of GEM courses accept graduates with an undergraduate degree in a 'non-science' subject. However, the pre-entry and application experiences of these entrants to GEM degrees in the UK remain under-explored. In the context of expanding medical school places to applicants with increasingly divers

Experiences With and Impact of an International Clinical Experience on Professional Development: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Global health experiences are increasingly integrated into physical therapy curricula to promote cultural humility and global health competencies. While benefits to students are well-documented, less is known about the long-term impact on professional development after graduation. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the experiences with and impact of an international clinical education experience that occurred during physical therapy education on post-graduate professional development. METHODS: A phenomenological qualitative design was us

Comparing the barriers to care and mental health needs of doctor of pharmacy students to other graduate health professions.

INTRODUCTION: Mental illness is prominent throughout higher education and even more so amongst healthcare professionals and those of Hispanic descent. The purpose of this study was to assess the state of mental health amongst a Doctor of Pharmacy cohort with a large Hispanic representation and compare their specific barriers to care and mental health care needs to other graduate health professions. METHODS: This prospective, university-wide, survey of graduate health profession students investigated barriers to mental health resource utilization as well as key social determinants of mental he

Filling the fellowship gap: A structured program for pharmacy students.

BACKGROUND: Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate train

Supporting PharmD graduates after unsuccessful licensing examination attempts.

Not passing the North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) is the reality for a significant number of PharmD graduates. The average first time pass rates for the NAPLEX have experienced significant drops since 2017, hitting an all-time low (76.6 %) for the Class of 2023. While most candidates eventually pass the NAPLEX, a staggering 3228 PharmD graduates remain unlicensed due to unsuccessful licensure examinations from cycle years 2022 to 2024. Further decline is anticipated with impending changes to the structure of the NAPLEX in 2025. Unfortunately, unlicensed graduates are unabl

The impact of holistic review on correlations between doctoral student outcomes, and GPA and GRE scores in the biomedical sciences.

Graduate admissions committees throughout the United States examine both quantitative and qualitative data from applicants to make admissions determinations. A number of recent studies have examined the ability of commonly used quantitative metrics such as the GRE and undergraduate GPA to predict the likelihood of applicant success in graduate programs. We examined whether an admissions committee could predict applicant success at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences based on quantitative metrics. We analyzed the predictive validity

Academic emergency medicine in India.

OBJECTIVES: Emergency medicine (EM) was recognized as a specialty by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in July 2009. As India undergoes urbanisation, cost-effective transition from managing infectious diseases to emergency management of trauma and cardio-respiratory diseases is crucial. Trained emergency healthcare workers are needed to respond effectively to these challenges. The objective was to determine the current status of academic EM training and related issues in India, and to discuss those that need to be addressed. METHODS: The authors conducted electronic literature searches for a

Discriminant analysis to predict graduation--nongraduation in a master's degree program in nursing.

Discriminant analysis was used to predict graduation and two categories of nongraduation from readily available admissions data at the University of Kansas nursing master's degree program. The traditional admissions indices, baccalaureate grade point average (GPA) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE)-verbal and -quantitative scores, were used as predictors. Criterion categories were composed of 102 graduates, 103 individuals who dropped out of the program, and 65 individuals who were not accepted. The first discriminant function was, chi 2 (6) = 87.567, p less than .0001, and extracted 98% of

[Development of entrustable professional activities for 39 residency programs].

INTRODUCTION: Entrustable professional activities (EPA) were developed to connect competencies with clinical practice and make them operational. These are tasks that can be entrusted to a trainee once he/she has obtained adequate competence to perform them, without supervision. By definition, residencies are the ideal setting for their implementation. However, one of the main challenges lies in the design and incorporation of EPA into current training programs. Through a collaborative effort between the Medical Education Department at Medicine University and Hospital de Clínicas, a pathway has

[Applications of chatbots in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education: an emerging tool with transformative potential].

In recent years, artificial intelligence has rapidly transitioned from a theoretical promise to a practical ally in medical education. Among its most accessible tools, chatbots powered by large language models stand out for their ability to simulate clinical scenarios, facilitate autonomous learning, and personalize feedback. In this article, we examine the pedagogical value and challenges of integrating chatbots into both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. Beyond a narrative review of the literature, we describe three original implementations developed in academic and clinical s

Preparing for work practice: Under- and postgraduate student training at the University of Pretoria (South Africa).

South Africa has experienced much new legislation since the restoration of democracy in 1994 which has had widespread influences on education. Past and current teaching strategies of occupational therapy training at the University of Pretoria have included the training of students in vocational rehabilitation (or work practice). The influence of these new laws on training is discussed. An outline of the undergraduate and postgraduate modules presented at the University of Pretoria is presented in this paper. The authors wish to share the training of vocational rehabilitation with other educato

Communication skills competencies: definitions and a teaching toolbox.

BACKGROUND: Doctors' interpersonal and communication skills correlate with improved health care outcomes. International medical organisations require competency in communication skills. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed a toolbox for assessing this competency and 5 others, yet none initially for teaching these skills. PURPOSE AND METHODS: The original focus in the development of the ACGME competencies was evaluation. This paper represents a significant step toward defining methods for teaching communication skills competencies. A total of 16 medical ed

Evolving residency requirements for ambulatory care training for five medical specialties, 1961 to 1989.

Recent changes in the patient population of teaching hospitals, spurred by technologic advances and economic forces, have jeopardized the traditional hospital-based model of residency training. In consequence, there has been increasing attention paid to the need for ambulatory care experience. A primary force in shaping the content of postgraduate medical education is "The Essentials of Accredited Residencies," published in the Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs. We reviewed recommendations and requirements for ambulatory settings and outpatient experience as specified in the Dir
