Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2001eng
OBJECTIVE: The authors report a case of mature teratoma of the middle ear in a 3-year-old girl with a 1-year history of otitis media.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Radiologic investigation revealed a partially cystic lesion of the petrous portion of the right temporal bone. It produced opacification of the middle ear as well as destruction of septal air cells. The patient underwent a subtotal petrosectomy. Histologically, the tumor was composed of an intimate admixture of mature tissues representing all three germ layers, including brain, myelinated nerve trunks, skeletal muscle, bone, immature cartil

Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) is a multi-functional polypeptide, which controls proliferation, differentiation of various cells, and regulates synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins. We injected human recombinant TGF-beta 1 into the subarachnoid space of 10-day-old C57BL/6 mice in order to study the role of TGF-beta 1, which is known to be released from platelets into the cerebrospinal fluid following subarachnoid hemorrhage. The ventricular system became dilated within 3 weeks following the injection and the body weights of injected mice stopped increasing 6 weeks after i

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fills the brain ventricles and the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The fluid compartment of the brain ventricles communicates with the interstitial fluid of the brain across the ependyma. In comparison to blood, the CSF contains very little protein to buffer acid-base challenges. Nevertheless, the CSF responds efficiently to changes in systemic pH by mechanisms that are dependent on the CO2/HCO3- buffer system. This is evident from early studies showing that the CSF secretion is sensitive to inhibitors of acid/base transporters and carbon

BACKGROUND: The retained medullary cord (RMC), caudal lipoma, and terminal myelocystocele (TMCC) are thought to originate from the failed regression spectrum during the secondary neurulation, and the central histopathological feature is the predominant presence of a central canal-like ependyma-lined lumen (CC-LELL) with surrounding neuroglial tissues (NGT), as a remnant of the medullary cord. However, reports on cases in which RMC, caudal lipoma, and TMCC coexist are very rare.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two patients with cystic RMC with caudal lipoma and caudal lipoma with an RMC component

Nuclear factor one X (NFIX) is a transcription factor required for normal ependymal development. Constitutive loss of Nfix in mice (Nfix-/-) is associated with hydrocephalus and sloughing of the dorsal ependyma within the lateral ventricles. Previous studies have implicated NFIX in the transcriptional regulation of genes encoding for factors essential to ependymal development. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underpinning hydrocephalus in Nfix-/- mice are unknown. To investigate the role of NFIX in hydrocephalus, we examined ependymal cells in brains from postnatal Nfix-/- and co

The study of brain histological specimens from patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) revealed the active reproduction and accumulation of pathological prions in the epitheliocytes of cerebral vascular brain plexuses in a new variant of CJD. There was PrPCD accumulation on the cerebral ventricular ependymal cells and in the subpial superficial cortex parts of the cerebellum and brain to give rise to diffuse clusters, immature and kuru-plaques. Morphological changes in the blood-cerebrospinal fluid and cerebrospinal fluid-brain barriers are described and the possible pathways of intracer

The presence of subependymal nodular heterotopia and cortical dysgenesis has been infrequently reported in patients with encephalocele. The majority of these patients were found to have posterior encephaloceles. We report a case of a Hispanic female with a frontoethmoidal encephalocele who developed epilepsy at 15 years of age. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated left subependymal nodular heterotopia, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and left fronto-temporal cortical dysplasia with polymicrogyria. This case illustrates the association of anterior encephalocele with sube

The olfactory bulb of the sheep brain is hollow, the cavity (olfactory ventricle or rhinocele) is connected to the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle by a narrow channel and contains cerebrospinal fluid (c.s.f.). In an apparently healthy black-faced lamb, longitudinal sections stained Giemsa Wright showed nodules of cellular proliferation in the rhinocele wall, projecting into the cavity. Some nodules were detached from the wall and lay free in the cavity. This cellular reaction indicates that pathogens may reach the rhinocele and pass from the rhinocele into the c.s.f. of the cerebral ven

The lumbosacral spinal cord including the cauda equina was examined in 100 unselected autopsied cases of infants dying at or near term. A striking finding in 10% of these cases was the occurrence of bilateral collections of ependymal cells lying in rows on the surface of the lumbosacral cord. In another 25% the central canal was forked or duplicate. These foci were not associated with evidence of defective neural tube closure or spina bifida; the central canal was of normal length. There was no relationship between the ependymal structures and systemic clinical or pathological findings. The pa

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of central nervous system tuberculosis, associated with high mortality and neurological sequelae. Microglia-driven neuroinflammation is a key contributor to TBM pathogenesis; however, its specific effects on ependymal cells-critical for cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and barrier function-and potential therapeutic strategies remain unclear.
METHODS: A murine TBM model was established by tail vein injection of BCG. Although the virulence of BCG, an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, is different from that of clinically isolat

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a congenital disease caused by gene mutations linked to ciliary dysfunction. PCD causes different symptoms, including chronic sinusitis, infertility, situs inversus and hydrocephalus. Motile cilia on ventricular ependymal cells are a crucial factor in cerebrospinal fluid circulation, and dysfunction of these cells causes hydrocephalus. Deleted in primary ciliary dyskinesia (Dpcd) is one genetic abnormality known to cause PCD, and its knockout leads to hydrocephalus in mice. PCD occurs in Dpcd -/- mice because of the lack of an inner dynein arm (IDA) in the m

The morphology of the deep pineal gland of the Sprague Dawley rat was investigated by serial block face scanning electron microscopy. Cells were three-dimensionally (3-D) reconstructed using the software Fiji TrackEM. The deep pineal gland consisted of 2-5 layers of electron-lucent pinealocytes, with a euchromatic nucleus, endowed with one or two processes. Laterally, the deep pineal merged with the habenula and the stria medullaris thalami, via an intermediate area containing cells with more electron-dense cytoplasm and an indented nucleus with heterochromatin. Neither nerve terminals nor cap

A 39-year-old man was rendered comatose after being struck repeatedly on the head in an altercation. After admission to the hospital, he had computed tomographic scan evidence of diffuse intraventricular and subarachnoid hemorrhage as well as cerebral edema. He shortly thereafter became "brain dead" and life-support systems were discontinued the following day. At autopsy, he had a swollen brain as well as evidence of intraventricular and subarachnoid hemorrhage. No aneurysm or other grossly obvious cause for the hemorrhage was detected. There was, however, a small laceration of the lateral wal

The basal region of the subcommissural organ (SCO) was studied in the chicken Gallus gallus. The presence of concentric rough endoplasmic reticulum associated with lipid droplets in the basal processes of the ependymal cells, along with the increase of the lysosomal population, can be interpreted as evident signs of degeneration of the basal processes. The nearly absence of secretory processes ending on the meningeal blood vessels, suggests that the leptomeningeal route is missing. On the contrary, the presence of basal ependymal processes in contact with the hypendymal vessels could indicate

Two newborns with congenital rubella syndrome are reported. Cranial sonography demonstrated bilateral cystic lesions in the subependymal germinal matrix. Congenital rubella and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are the most common proven causes of subependymal cysts of nonhaemorrhagic origin in the newborn. The sonographic detection of these cysts should prompt an intensive search for congenital viral infections.

Skin-covered lesions in the sacrococcygeal region include an unusual array of congenital tumors and malformations. Excluding the easily recognized meningomyelocele, there are over 50 other conditions that occur, many of which seem to be important in linking the disciplines of teratology and oncology. While it is impossible to precisely determine the manner in which these arise, there is suggestive evidence that early structures incorporated within the caudal cell mass of the embryonic tail may play an important role. The present paper reviews the basis for this speculation from both the litera

Hydrocephalus developed as a sequela of mumps virus infections of suckling hamsters. The initial infection after intracerebral inoculation was limited largely to ependymal cells lining the ventricles. This infection was clinically inapparent but later resulted in a noninflammatory stenosis or occlusion of the aqueduct of Sylvius.

This review highlights the main aspects of the involvement of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) metabolism in the reparative processes of the adult brain, including neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis and angiogenesis, which are necessary for the normal functioning of the central nervous system. Neurogenesis is a complex, multifactorial, and multi-stage process of formation of neurons and neuroglial cells from neural stem cells. Neurotrophic factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF), play a special role in the regulation of
