Looking for answers: eye movements in non-visual cognitive tasks.

It is not known why people move their eyes when engaged in non-visual cognition. The current study tested the hypothesis that differences in saccadic eye movement rate (EMR) during non-visual cognitive tasks reflect different requirements for searching long-term memory. Participants performed non-visual tasks requiring relatively low or high long-term memory retrieval while eye movements were recorded. In three experiments, EMR was substantially lower for low-retrieval than for high-retrieval tasks, including in an eyes closed condition in Experiment 3. Neither visual imagery nor between-task

Visual motion due to eye movements helps guide the hand.

Movement of the body, head, or eyes with respect to the world creates one of the most common yet complex situations in which the visuomotor system must localize objects. In this situation, vestibular, proprioceptive, and extra-retinal information contribute to accurate visuomotor control. The utility of retinal motion information, on the other hand, is questionable, since a single pattern of retinal motion can be produced by any number of head or eye movements. Here we investigated whether retinal motion during a smooth pursuit eye movement contributes to visuomotor control. When subjects purs

Potential role of anti-GAD antibodies in abnormal eye movements.

Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) catalyzes the conversion of glutamic acid to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Autoantibodies directed against GAD (antiGAD-Ab) have been described in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, stiff-man syndrome, and in a few patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia. The presence of these autoantibodies suggests an autoimmune pathophysiological mechanism for the neurological manifestations in these disorders. However, the exact role of antiGAD-Ab and GABAergic neurotransmission in the pathogenesis of the neurological manifestations, particularly in p

Eye movements evoked by selective saccular nerve stimulation in cats.

OBJECTIVE: Because of technical obstacles in controlling current spread to adjacent peripheral nerve, eye movements evoked by activation of the otolith organs have not been investigated in detail compared to eye movements evoked by activation of the canal organs. We attempted to solve this problem by applying more sensitive methods using fine needle and strictly controlling stimulus current intensity compare with filed potential for selective stimulation. METHODS: Eye movements evoked by selective, unilateral saccular (SAC) nerve stimulation were investigated using both electrooculography (EO

Experimental and computational analysis of monkey smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements are guided by visual feedback and are surprisingly accurate despite the time delay between visual input and motor output. Previous models have reproduced the accuracy of pursuit either by using elaborate visual signals or by adding sources of motor feedback. Our goal was to constrain what types of signals drive pursuit by obtaining data that would discriminate between these two modeling approaches, represented by the "image motion model" and the "tachometer feedback" model. Our first set of experiments probed the visual properties of pursuit with brief square-pulse

Employing following eye movements to discriminate normal from glaucoma subjects.

We recorded optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) to see if slow phase velocity, duration or other measures were affected by glaucoma. Drifting grating patterns that either weakly or strongly evoked the spatial frequency doubling illusion were employed. Analysis of 68 variables characterizing the OKN revealed that small subsets of these variables were good at discriminating normal from primary open angle glaucoma subjects. The variables were related to the regularity of following eye movements. Models including the best five variables selected in two different ways classified about 90% of subjects corre

Analysis of electro-oculographic artifact during vertical saccadic eye movements.

The analysis of vertical saccades by electrooculography (EOG) is limited by the presence of waveform artifacts that occur with both upward and downward saccades. The artifacts have been shown to increase the calculated velocities of upward saccades. For better evaluation of the nature of these artifacts, voluntary vertical saccades were recorded by EOG and magnetic search coil in five normal subjects and by EOG only in two patients who had previously undergone enucleation. All subjects demonstrated peaked EOG artifacts during vertical saccades. The amplitude of these artifacts was decreased bu

Autosomal recessive ataxia, slow eye movements, dementia and extrapyramidal disturbances.

An Arab family with an autosomal recessive form of spinocerebellar degeneration with slow eye movements is reported. Hitherto all the reported cases were either sporadic or of autosomal dominant inheritance. Associated are progressive intellectual impairment and extrapyramidal dysfunction as well as peripheral neuropathy and skeletal abnormalities. Muscle biopsy revealed non-specific mitochondrial abnormalities. The spectrum of eye movement abnormalities is discussed and the literature is reviewed. It is concluded that the hallmark of this syndrome (slow or even absent saccades) is one of a gr

Roving lateral eye movements in coma. A clinical-pathological study.

Five patients in deep coma due to extensive supratentorial lesions presented roving lateral eye movements (ping-pong gaze), distinguished by the fact that the eyes, after moving to one extreme of gaze, returned to the midline instead of to the opposite extreme. The phenomenon was reported recently by Reynard et al.

Quantification of tracking eye movements in patients with neurological disorders.

Tracking eye movements were studied in 20 healthy subjects and in 24 patients with vestibular neuronitis, disorders within the frontal cortex, the cerebellum or the brain stem. The tracking tests were performed at six different target velocities between 10-60 degrees s-1 and different parameters were evaluated. The maximum velocity gain of smooth pursuit as normal in the group with vestibular neuronitis but reduced in the groups with disorders within the frontal cortex, cerebellum and the brain stem. The total amplitude of tracking and amplitude of smooth pursuit were normal in the groups with

Sleep-wake patterns, non-rapid eye movement, and rapid eye movement sleep cycles in teenage narcolepsy.

BACKGROUND: To further characterize sleep disorders associated with narcolepsy, we assessed the sleep-wake patterns, rapid eye movement (REM), and non-REM (NREM) sleep cycles in Chinese teenagers with narcolepsy. METHODS: A total of 14 Chinese type 1 narcoleptic patients (13.4 ± 2.6 years of age) and 14 healthy age- and sex-matched control subjects (13.6 ± 1.8 years of age) were recruited. Ambulatory 24-h polysomnography was recorded for two days, with test subjects adapting to the instruments on day one and the study data collection performed on day two. RESULTS: Compared with the controls,

Positional Change of the Eyeball During Eye Movements: Evidence of Translatory Movement.

Purpose: To investigate the positional change of the eyeball induced by horizontal and vertical gazing to deduce translatory movement, using three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: In this prospective observational study participants underwent orbital MRI during central, right, left, up, and down gazing. MRI scans were processed using self-developed software; this software enabled 3D MR image reconstruction and the superimposition of reconstructed image sets between different gazes. After acquiring the coordinates of the eyeball centroid in each gaze, the changes in c

Excessive twitch movements in rapid eye movement sleep with daytime sleepiness.

A man who showed excessive twitch movement, such as fragmentary myoclonus (FM) and periodic movements in sleep (PMS) predominantly during REM sleep, is reported. He complained of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). After examination, his twitch movements were shown not to accompany narcolepsy, and his EDS were considered to originate from nocturnal sleep disturbance caused by FM and PMS.

Analysis of eye movement features in patients with Alzheimer's disease based on intelligent eye movement analysis and evaluation system.

BACKGROUND: The early identification of Alzheimer's disease (AD) benefits patients, so creating a simple and convenient method is crucial for diagnosing early symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To offer a potential approach for the early detection of both AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Eye movement data from 66 patients were divided into three groups, including healthy control group (HC), MCI group, and AD group. We searched for parameters that can detect MCI at an early stage and drew receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The correlation between eye movement parameters and cog

What if it is the eyes? The effect of eye movement disorders on cognitive testing in MS.

BACKGROUND: Visual cognitive tests that rely on saccades may be affected by internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), irrespective of cognitive ability. INO and cognitive decline are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). We assessed the impact of INO on visual versus non-visual cognitive tests in PwMS. METHODS: PwMS (n=197) completed auditory and visual neuropsychological tests, and demographically corrected Z-scores were obtained. INO was quantified using the DEMoNS infrared oculography protocol, applying the versional dysconjugacy index (VDI) of area under the saccadic trajectory (AUC)

Bat eye movements resolve a long-standing question in gaze control.

Eye movements enable visual information gathering and stabilize gaze via the optokinetic reflex (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) pathways.1 Echolocating bats, despite their rapid and agile flight maneuvers to land upside down and navigate 3D space, have long been thought not to move their eyes, an assumption originating from Walls's influential assertion over 80 years ago2 but never tested with empirical measurements. Here we present a quantitative analysis of eye movements driven by visual and vestibular signals in Seba's short-tailed bat (Carollia perspicillata). Bats generated robust

Markerless three-dimensional analysis of mouse eye movements using stereo vision.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying three-dimensional mouse eye rotations, especially torsion, often requires invasive implanted coils or ocular markers. We developed and validated a markerless stereo vision-based method to measure yaw, pitch, and roll eye rotations. NEW METHOD: Two aligned cameras were geometrically calibrated. A convolutional neural network detected pupil edges, which were fitted with ellipses. Matching edge points were reconstructed in three dimensions to estimate the rotation center and compute yaw and pitch; roll was derived from torsional shifts in pupil-edge irregularities. Perfor

Path integration from optic flow and the role of eye movements.

Optic flow provides critical visual information for self-motion perception, including direction (heading), speed, and travel distance (path integration). While eye movements are naturally elicited during optic flow, most lab-based studies of human path integration require central fixation, potentially altering perception. Here, we examined whether free eye movements improve distance discrimination compared with fixation, testing the hypothesis that oculomotor signals may support oculomotor odometry. The participants viewed two consecutive optic flow stimuli simulating forward self-motion acros
