A feasibility study of an algorithm that identifies ascites on image-guided paracentesis.

Prompt management of ascites via image-guided paracentesis can provide therapy for patients with ascites and identify potentially fatal infections. However, not all medical facilities have trained providers readily available. The goal of this study was to develop an algorithm that can reliably identify and localize ascites on abdominal ultrasound images autonomously. The proposed algorithm was developed via OpenCV image processing library on Python software and analyzed 16 random abdominal ultrasound images with multiple views to validate the software. The algorithm identified 100% of targeted

Kerala Brain Injury Questionnaire: Feasibility, Reliability, and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can result in persistent neurological symptoms and signs and may contribute to late life cognitive decline. Yet, recognition of post-mTBI symptoms in older populations, especially in low-middle-income countries such as India, remains inadequate. Hence, there is a critical need to develop a screening tool to assess lifetime post-mTBI symptoms in India, which has a disproportionately high rate of TBI. OBJECTIVE: To develop the Kerala Brain Injury Questionnaire (KBIQ) to assess post-mTBI (postconcussive) symptomatology. METHODS: We examined the fea

Narrative Discourse Intervention for Patients in Posttraumatic Amnesia: A Feasibility Study.

PURPOSE: Recent INCOG 2.0 guidelines for posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) recommend commencing multidisciplinary functional intervention for patients who do not demonstrate severe behavioral disturbance. This pilot feasibility study aimed to determine if people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) could engage in a narrative discourse intervention during PTA. METHOD: A narrative discourse intervention was developed based on existing evidence for discourse treatment and allied health treatments with patients in PTA. The study setting was a TBI-specific facility. Participants were screened on ward admi

Forearm Extensor Tendon Fractional Lengthening: An Anatomic Feasibility Study.

PURPOSE: Fractional tendon lengthening (FL) of the forearm flexors involves multiple tenotomies at the musculotendinous junction. However, the feasibility of this technique with respect to forearm extensor muscles has not been well-studied. This study sought to evaluate the anatomy of forearm extensors, analyze the extent of muscle-tendon overlap, and identify the safest area to perform FL. METHODS: Nine soft-embalmed adult cadaver forearms from the midhumerus to the wrist were dissected through a dorsal longitudinal incision. For each muscle, we defined and measured the total overlapping zon

Feasibility of Laryngeal Joint Replacement: A Proof of Concept Study in Cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior laryngeal stenosis is a vexing problem despite efforts at early tracheostomy in those intubated on ventilatory support. Treatment in advanced cases relies on permanent tracheostomy or irreversible arytenoidectomy/cordectomy, which are compromises between voice, swallowing, and airway. While having intact laryngeal neuromuscular function, there is immobility of the vocal cord due to scarring and ankylosis of the cricoarytenoid joint. In this proof of concept study, we explore the feasibility of repairing cricoarytenoid joint function with joint replacement in the fresh cada

Potential analgesic function of the clitoris in pregnant women: A feasibility study.

Currently, the clitoris is considered to exist solely for sexual pleasure. This prospective, single-centre pilot study focuses on and evaluates an alternative function of the clitoris; pain relief during pregnancy and childbirth. Conducted between 2020 and 2023 at Rouen University Hospital, France, this feasibility study challenges the assertion of the singular function of the clitoris. The primary aim was to assess the acceptability of an intervention focusing on the potential analgesic function of the clitoris. The secondary aim was to assess pain relief. Pregnant women were offered the opti

Tonsillotomy by monopolar diathermy as a new procedure in Greenland: a feasibility study.

Tonsillotomy (TT) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to tonsillectomy (TE), associated with lower bleeding risk. In Greenland, where access to ear, nose and throat specialists and emergency care is limited, postoperative bleeding is a significant concern. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of implementing TT across Greenland. A prospective case series was conducted at one central and two remote healthcare facilities. Children and adults with tonsillar hypertrophy, recurrent or chronic tonsillitis were eligible for inclusion. TT was performed using monopolar diath

Feasibility planning study of lattice radiotherapy for palliation in bulky tumors.

PURPOSE: Lattice radiotherapy can potentially deliver high doses to the tumor core, while conventional doses to the periphery resulting in improved response rates in large tumors (> 5 cm). We assessed the feasibility of planning lattice radiotherapy and dosimetrically compared it with conventional radiotherapy. METHODS: This retrospective dosimetric study evaluated 10 patients with large tumors (> 5 cm) treated with palliative intent with a dose of 20Gy in five fractions. High-dose lattice points were created at doses of 50Gy in non-hepatic tumors and 35Gy in hepatic tumors. Lattice plans wer

Ketogenic diet registry for epilepsy: A cross-sectional feasibility study.

We aimed to develop a registry ('Keto-Reg') for individuals with epilepsy referred for ketogenic dietary therapy (KDT) and to test feasibility of its implementation. The purpose of the registry is to provide a platform for collaborative research to answer specific research questions regarding long-term clinical and safety outcomes and to identify the most suitable candidates for KDT. Registry data items were determined via an international Delphi survey of KDT healthcare professionals, and then entered into an electronic platform. Three UK and two other European KDT centres entered data for 10

Preoperative spinal education for lumbar spinal stenosis: A feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a leading cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain among older adults. A common and costly intervention for the treatment of LSS is lumbar decompression with or without fusion (LSS surgery), which has mixed outcomes among patients. Prehabilitation is a strategy designed to optimize the consistency of positive surgical outcomes and promote patient self-efficacy, while attempting to mitigate postoperative complications. No efforts have investigated the prehabilitation strategies specifically for patients undergoing LSS surgery. OBJECTIVE: To determine

Human intravital microscopy in the study of sarcomas: an early trial of feasibility.

UNLABELLED: Sarcomas comprise a vast and heterogenous group of rare tumors. Because of their diversity, it is challenging to study sarcomas as a whole with regard to their biological and molecular characteristics. This diverse set of tumors may also possess differences related to their tumor-associated vasculature, which in turn may impact the ability to deliver systemic therapies (e.g., chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy). Consequently, response to systemic treatment may also be variable as these depend on the ability of the therapy to reach the tumor target via the tumor-ass

ENDOTHELIAL GLYCOCALYX SHEDDING IN INTRA-ABDOMINAL SEPSIS: A FEASIBILITY STUDY.

Background: The endothelial glycocalyx layer (EGL) is a complex meshwork of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans that protect the vascular endothelium. Cleavage or shedding of EGL-specific biomarkers, such as hyaluronic acid (HA) and syndecan-1 (SDC-1, CD138) in plasma, have been shown to be associated with poor clinical outcomes. However, it is unclear whether levels of circulating EGL biomarkers are representative of the EGL injury within the tissues. The objective of the present feasibility study was to describe a pathway for plasma and tissue procurement to quantify EGL components in a coh

Penile Transplantation in Gender Affirmation Surgery: A Theoretical Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: It can be argued that individuals in the transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) community suffer from a similar impact on quality of life in the face of gender dysphoria, with psychosocial and physical consequences. Indications for penile allotransplantation for patients wishing to undergo gender affirmation surgery have yet to be elucidated, but technical lessons for feasibility can be gleaned from penis transplants that have already been performed on cisgender males to date. METHODS: This study investigates the theoretical feasibility for penile-to-clitoral transplantation, pri
