Effects of geographical and climatic factors on cystic echinococcosis in south-western Iran.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus that can cause serious health and economic problems in the endemic foci. CE is globally distributed in various climatic conditions from circumpolar to tropical latitudes. Iran is an important endemic area with a spectrum of weather conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of geo-climatic factors on the distribution of livestock CE in south-western Iran (SWI) in 2016 to 2018. Data of livestock CE were retrieved from veterinary organizations of four provinces of SWI. The geo-climatic factors,

Using meta-quality to assess the utility of volunteered geographic information for science.

BACKGROUND: Volunteered geographic information (VGI) has strong potential to be increasingly valuable to scientists in collaboration with non-scientists. The abundance of mobile phones and other wireless forms of communication open up significant opportunities for the public to get involved in scientific research. As these devices and activities become more abundant, questions of uncertainty and error in volunteer data are emerging as critical components for using volunteer-sourced spatial data. METHODS: Here we present a methodology for using VGI and assessing its sensitivity to three types

Quantifying the spatial and temporal variation in dose from external exposure to radiation: a new tool for use on free-ranging wildlife.

Inadequate dosimetry is often the fundamental problem in much of the controversial research dealing with radiation effects on free-ranging wildlife. Such research is difficult because of the need to measure dose from several potential pathways of exposure (i.e., internal contamination, external irradiation, and inhalation). Difficulties in quantifying external exposures can contribute significantly to the uncertainties of dose-effect relationships. Quantifying an animal's external exposure due to spatial-temporal use of habitats that can vary by orders of magnitude in radiation levels is parti

Geospatial approaches to analysing spatial patterns of stroke incidence and mortality: a systematic review.

Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide; however, its burden is unevenly distributed across geographical areas. This systematic review aimed to synthesise studies examining the spatial distribution of stroke incidence, prevalence and mortality, with a review of geospatial analytical approaches used to identify these patterns. A systematic literature search identified 29 studies that applied spatial analysis or spatial modelling techniques to stroke-related outcomes. The included studies demonstrated heterogeneity in geographical scale, spatial units, outcome measures an

Evaluating TOD performance through node-place model: evidence from bus stop areas in Windhoek, Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Transit-oriented development (TOD) is now regarded as an important measure to improve sustainable urban mobility and land-use efficiency in rapidly growing cities. Despite the vast research on TOD implementation in the Asian and American context, little has been done regarding the application of TOD in African cities, especially those that are not equipped with metropolitan rails, such as Windhoek, Namibia. METHODS: This study evaluates 135 bus stops in Windhoek based on a node-place (NP) model. Within a 400-meter walking catchment, three node indicators and seven place indicators

Galiano, C, Nakamura, FY, Ribeiro, J, Asín-Izquierdo, I, and Asian-Clemente, JA. Position-dependent external load management in professional football: An exploratory observational study on the effects of microcycle length. J Strength Cond Res 40(8): e848-e855, 2026-The literature shows that professional football players face different external loads during matches based on their playing positions, but it remains unclear whether their weekly accumulated load reflects their specific roles or remains consistent regardless of position. The objectives of this study were to analyze how microcycle le

Enhancing the gravity model for commuters: Time-and-spatial-structure-based improvements in Japan's metropolitan areas.

Metropolitan commuting flows reveal crucial insights into urban spatial dynamics; however, existing mobility models often struggle to capture the complex, heterogeneous patterns within these regions. This study introduces the Spatially Segregated Urban Gravity (SSUG) model, a novel approach that synergistically combines urban classification with gravity-based flow prediction to address this limitation. The SSUG model's key innovations include: (1) demonstrating the existence of different scaling laws in metropolitan areas, (2) identifying the existence of data-driven bifurcation that delineate

Investigation of port intervention to coastal and nearshore dynamics: a GIS and AHP approach.

The goal of the study was attempted to understand the impact of selected ports on the coastal and nearshore dynamics. Dwelling activities along the coastal zone were particularly high in the last two decades. Hence, ports constructed between 2000 and 2022 such as Mundra, Hazira, Karaikal, Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram, and Gopalpur were considered for the study. The land and shore dynamics were assessed prior and after their construction. The landward impact was identified by the changes in LULC, and the dynamics of coastal sediments were assessed from numerical model before and after the ports' c

Spatial mapping of dengue fever prevalence and its association with geo-climatic factors in Lahore, Pakistan.

A vector-borne disease of concern for global public health, dengue fever has been spreading its endemicity and several cases in recent years, particularly in Lahore Pakistan. Dengue transmission is influenced by geo-climatic conditions. This study aimed to map the spatial prevalence of dengue fever in Lahore and its association with geo-climatic factors during the epidemic of the year 2021. In this study, geo-climatic factors that could potentially encourage the growth of the virus are chosen for this study, and their temporal and spatial changeability relate to dengue cases. The objective of

Monitoring mobility in older adults using a Global Positioning System (GPS) smartwatch and accelerometer: A validation study.

There is growing interest in identifying valid and reliable methods for detecting early mobility limitations in aging populations. A multi-sensor approach that combines accelerometry with Global Positioning System (GPS) devices could provide valuable insights into late-life mobility decline; however, this innovative approach requires more investigation. We conducted a series of two experiments with 25 older participants (66.2±8.5 years) to determine the validity of a GPS enabled smartwatch (TicWatch S2 and Pro 3 Ultra GPS) and separate accelerometer (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT) to collect movement, na

What Are More Efficient Transportation Services in a Rural Area? A Case Study in Yangsan City, South Korea.

Population aging and population decline are experienced not only in South Korea but also in other countries around the world. In particular, public transportation operations, which have been centered on existing large buses, are struggling with a continuous deficit owing to the rapid population decline in rural areas, thus leading to a social issue. To address this issue, nations worldwide have attempted to find various alternatives. In South Korea, voucher taxis and city-type buses have been newly supplied in rural areas as alternatives. In this study, six city-type bus routes implemented in

Evaluation of Neighborhood Socio-Economic Status, as Measured by the Delphi Method, on Dengue Fever Distribution in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia.

Dengue fever, a mosquito-transmitted viral disease, is present in many neighborhoods in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia. One factor likely to affect its distribution is the socio-economic status of local neighborhoods; however, the absence of socio-economic census data in Saudi Arabia has precluded detailed investigation. This study aims to develop a proxy measure of socio-economic status in Jeddah City in order to assess its relationship with the occurrence of dengue fever. The Delphi method was used to assess the socio-economic status (high, medium or low) of local neighborhoods in Jeddah City. A

Micro-Space Complexity and Context in the Space-Time Variation in Enteric Disease Risk for Three Informal Settlements of Port au Prince, Haiti.

Diffusion of cholera and other diarrheal diseases in an informal settlement is a product of multiple behavioral, environmental and spatial risk factors. One of the most important components is the spatial interconnections among water points, drainage ditches, toilets and the intervening environment. This risk is also longitudinal and variable as water points fluctuate in relation to bacterial contamination. In this paper we consider part of this micro space complexity for three informal settlements in Port au Prince, Haiti. We expand on more typical epidemiological analysis of fecal coliforms
