Acceptance of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist among surgical personnel in hospitals in Guatemala city.

BACKGROUND: Studies have highlighted the effects the use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist can have on lowering mortality and surgical complications. Implementation of the checklist is not easy and several barriers have been identified. Few studies have addressed personnel's acceptance and attitudes toward the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. Determining personnel's acceptance might reflect their intention to use the checklist while their awareness and knowledge of the checklist might assess the effectiveness of the training process. METHODS: Through an anonymous self- responded questionnair

Evaluation of Behavioral and Pharmacological Effects of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Valeriana prionophylla Standl. from Guatemala.

There are few studies on the pharmacological properties of Valeriana prionophylla Standl. (VP), known as "Valeriana del monte", and used in Mesoamerican folk medicine to treat sleep disorders. This study examines the pharmacological effects of the hydroalcoholic extract of the dry rhizome using the open field, rota rod, elevated plus-maze (EPM), forced swimming (FST), strychnine- and pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, PTZ-induced seizures, and the inhibitory avoidance tests. VP did not show any protective effect against PTZ-induced convulsions. In the EPM, exhibited an anxiolytic-like effect

Two distinct Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) taxa are found in sympatry in Guatemala and Mexico.

Approximately 10 million people are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, which remains the most serious parasitic disease in the Americas. Most people are infected via triatomine vectors. Transmission has been largely halted in South America in areas with predominantly domestic vectors. However, one of the main Chagas vectors in Mesoamerica, Triatoma dimidiata, poses special challenges to control due to its diversity across its large geographic range (from Mexico into northern South America), and peridomestic and sylvatic populations that repopulate houses fo

House improvements and community participation in the control of Triatoma dimidiata re-infestation in Jutiapa, Guatemala.

The deterioration or absence of plaster walls in houses and poor hygienic conditions are the most important risk factors for indoor Triatoma dimidiata infestation in Guatemala. A cross-disciplinary study was conducted addressing T. dimidiata infestation, household hygiene, and housing construction. The study focused on local materials and cultural aspects (including gender roles) that could lead to long-term improvements in wall construction. A new plaster mix for walls was developed on the basis of laboratory studies on construction materials recommended by local villagers. Four villages with

Historical and modern medicinal plant uses--the example of the Ch'orti' Maya and Ladinos in Eastern Guatemala.

Local empirical knowledge about medicinal properties of plants is the basis for their use as home remedies. Particularly in developing countries such remedies still are an indispensable resource for everyday health care. They form the basis for numerous studies on drugs from natural sources. Like other indigenous groups across the world, the Ch'orti' Maya in Eastern Guatemala are currently experiencing a phase of dramatic cultural change, with their traditional knowledge about plants being in great danger of disappearing. During 17 months of fieldwork, medicinal plant uses were documented usin

A study of risk factors associated with the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in villages around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

Cryptosporidium parvum is an endemic, zoonotic coccidian parasitosis that is highly prevalent in third-world countries where waterborne fecal contamination of food and drink or person-to-person contact with oocysts are the most common methods of transmission of the enteric protozoan. This type of transmission of the parasite made the villages around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala a unique site to compare environmental risk factors with the level of Cryptosporidium infections in the local residents. The study was carried out in two villages, San Antonio Palopo and Santa Catarina Palopo, located in the

The emergence of AIDS in Guatemala: inpatient experience at the Hospital General San Juan de Dios.

Little is known about the effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on the Central American healthcare system. We describe HIV-related admissions in a Guatemalan medical service. The study was conducted at Guatemala City's largest public hospital. Data were derived from standardized data collection sheets maintained by the HIV testing service and by HIV clinic physicians. Data were collected for 295 medicine admissions of 257 HIV-infected adults during an 18-month period in 1999 and 2000; 30% of the patients were women. Average age was 33 years. Only 12.5% of the patients had been

Biting activity of black flies in Guatemala: parity rates and differences between localities and habitats.

Host-seeking activity of anthropophilic black flies at 4 localities in Guatemala with different prevalence rates of onchocerciasis was assessed using human attractants and semimonthly catches over one year. Density of host-seeking Simulium ochraceum was greatest at the locality with the highest incidence of onchocerciasis and very reduced at the 2 localities with low levels of human infection. The overall percentage of parous host-seeking S. ochraceum at the 4 localities ranged from 41%-49%. Host-seeking activity appeared to be concentrated near streams containing immature stages, and few fema

The use of an Onchocerca volvulus microfilarial antigen skin test in an epidemiological survey of onchocerciasis in Guatemala.

Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae obtained from onchocercal nodules were used as antigenic material for a skin test. This antigen is as specific as those previously employed in skin tests, detecting 85.2% of the persons with positive diagnostic signs of onchocerciasis in endemic areas. A low rate of false positives was found in the control group in nonendemic areas. The positive rate of reactions in the persons without positive signs in the endemic areas might be due to the presences of cases not detected as a result of palpation for nodules and two skin biopsies. In the examination of the res

Community Health Workers Equipped with an mHealth Application Can Accurately Diagnose Hypertension in Rural Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a leading global cause of morbidity and mortality and is increasing in low- and middle-income countries, where unawareness of hypertension is a primary obstacle to management. Community health workers (CHWs) in combination with mobile health (mHealth) tools are increasingly used in LMIC health systems to strengthen primary care infrastructure. In this study, we applied this care model to hypertension in rural Guatemala by comparing the accuracy of CHWs equipped with an mHealth clinical decision support application in diagnosing hypertension to concurrent physician e

Measuring Environmental Chemical Burden with Wristbands: Implications for Kidney Health Among Women in Rural Guatemala.

Chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu) is a public health concern, particularly in agricultural communities, with multiple environmental exposures hypothesized as potential contributors. This study employed a targeted exposure assessment using personal silicone wristbands to characterize chemical exposures among women living and working in CKDu-affected regions of Guatemala. Participants wore wristbands for seven days, passively sampling air and dermal exposures. Overall, 45 wristbands were collected from 37 female participants (19 sugarcane workers and 18 community members). Of the 1

High Background Congenital Microcephaly in Rural Guatemala: Implications for Neonatal Congenital Zika Virus Infection Screening.

BACKGROUND: Congenital microcephaly is the result of a disturbance in early brain development and can have multiple etiologies. Establishing background prevalence of microcephaly in Zika virus (ZIKV)-affected areas is important for improving identification of ZIKV-affected newborns. However, to date, there is limited consistent guidance for the accurate identification of microcephaly in infants of unknown gestational age, a common concern in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Occipital frontal head circumference (OFC) obtained from infants (0-13 days) of unknown gestational age at enr

Intervention to lower household wood smoke exposure in Guatemala reduces ST-segment depression on electrocardiograms.

BACKGROUND: A large body of evidence suggests that fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution is a cause of cardiovascular disease, but little is known in particular about the cardiovascular effects of indoor air pollution from household use of solid fuels in developing countries. RESPIRE (Randomized Exposure Study of Pollution Indoors and Respiratory Effects) was a randomized trial of a chimney woodstove that reduces wood smoke exposure. OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypotheses that the stove intervention, compared with open fire use, would reduce ST-segment depression and increase heart rate va

Search for epizootic-like Venezuelan encephalitis virus at enzootic habitats in Guatemala during 1969-1971.

Seventy-four strains of Venezuelan encephalitis (VE) virus recovered from sentinel hamsters or mosquitoes at enzootic habitats in Guatemala in the two years following the 1969 epidemic-equine epizootic were examined for ability to produce small plaques in Vero African green monkey kidney cell cultures, like isolates obtained during the epizootic. (a) One strain recovered from a sentinel hamster in late October 1969 at an enzootic habitat near the epicenter of the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and equine-virulence properties like epizootic virus; this strain retained its small plaque charact

Associations between Helicobacter pylori with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested an association between Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of the current study was to examine the association in Guatemala, a region with elevated prevalences of both H pylori and NAFLD. Associations between H pylori and other metabolic conditions were also examined, as were associations between H hepaticus and H bilis and the metabolic conditions. MATERIALS & METHODS: The analysis included 424 participants from a cross-sectional study in Guatemala. H pylori seropositivity was defined as positivity f

Residual survival and local dispersal drive reinfestation by Triatoma dimidiata following insecticide application in Guatemala.

Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomine insect vectors. In Guatemala, insecticide spraying is an integral part of management of the main vector, Triatoma dimidiata. Spraying typically has low efficacy, which may be due to incomplete elimination from infested houses, within-village dispersal, or influx from other villages or sylvan environments. To evaluate how these mechanisms contribute to reinfestation, we conducted a time-course analysis of T. dimidiata infestation, abundance and household genetic structure in two nearby villages in

Geographic distribution and morphometric differentiation of Triatoma nitida usinger 1939 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Guatemala.

Triatoma nitida was found in 14 (0.4%) out of 3,726 houses located in six departments across Guatemala, which were surveyed from 1994 to 1998 by the man-hour collection method. Compared to previous information, the distribution of T. nitida in Guatemala has increased from five to nine departments; the species is present in mild climates at altitudes from 960 to 1,500 m. Fourteen percent of the intradomestic T. nitida were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The species was often found in conjunction with other triatomines (T. dimidiata and Rhodnius prolixus). The domestic and peridomestic presenc

Using the Lived Experience From Traditional Midwives in Remote Guatemala to Guide Improvement in Maternal Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is the second leading cause of maternal death and accounts for 25% of infant deaths in Guatemala, where maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in Central America. One contributing factor is that most women give birth at home with traditional midwives (TMs) with limited reading and writing skills who lack training about obstetric emergencies, such as preeclampsia. METHODS: Guided by the World Health Organization's Quality of Care Theory of Change, authors conducted a qualitative study using thematic analysis of focus groups as the data collection m
