INTRODUCTION: Iliac crest is the most common donor site for autogenous bone grafting as cortical bone, cancellous bone or combination of both can be harvested in abundance depending upon the need. Ilium provides highest concentration of osteo-component cells and greater quality of bone with less morbidity.
AIM: The study was conducted to evaluate the donor site morbidity associated with autogenous iliac crest bone grafting for reconstruction in maxillofacial surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Around 12 patients, who had undergone iliac crest bone harvesting for various maxillofacial and reconst

Intraosseous pneumatocysts are benign air-containing lesions that are most often found in the spine and pelvis and are nearly always treated nonoperatively. Although rarely clinically symptomatic, studies have shown pneumatocysts to be present in up to 10% of computed tomography (CT) scans of the pelvis and spine. Radiographic characteristics of these lesions include a localized collection of gas with a thin sclerotic rim, no bony destruction, no soft tissue masses, and no medullary abnormalities. Computed tomography is the diagnostic study of choice, with Hounsfield units ranging from -580 to

Pelvic insufficiency fractures are fairly common in elderly patients and can be a source of major functional impairment, particularly when they involve the ilium. Early rehabilitation with adequate pain relief has been the traditional method of treatment. The recently developed S2 alar iliac technique involves placing pelvic fixation into the ilium through a pathway from the sacral ala. The bony channel between the second dorsal sacral foramen and the anterior inferior iliac spine is used to provide rigid sacropelvic fixation for adult and pediatric spine deformities. The authors describe a ne

A 9-year-old, female Mongrel dog was presented for posterior hindlimb weakness, inability to stand, and pain in the lumbosacral and pelvic regions. Radiography revealed a lytic lesion extending from L5 to L6 to the ilium. At necropsy, an 8 x 2 to 3.2 x 3 cm, irregular, white, firm mass was identified extending from the left dorsolateral aspect of the L6 vertebrae to the sacrum, crossing the sacroiliac joint to the ilium, and reaching the acetabulum without affecting the joint cartilage. Tumor masses were also present bilaterally near the costochondral junction of several ribs. White, soft nodu

The ilium and the fibula are the most common sites for bone-graft harvesting. The different methods for harvesting iliac bone graft include curettage, trapdoor or splitting techniques for cancellous bone, and the subcrestal-window technique for bicortical graft. A tricortical graft from the anterior ilium should be taken at least 3 cm posterior to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). Iliac donor-site complications include pain, neurovascular injury, avulsion fractures of the ASIS, hematoma, infection, herniation of abdominal contents, gait disturbance, cosmetic deformity, violation of the

Hip dysplasia refers to the acetabular or femoral head shape and size and the relationships among their unusual growth; the most common types are acetabular hypogenesis and head mortar containing extraordinarily. The cause of disease is still not clear. There is a lack of unified classification standards and clinical diagnosis criteria. The main pathological change is the performance of the above of acetabular and the frontal defects. The acetabular bone is transferred to the hip center, which reduces femoral head acetabular tolerance and causes insufficient coverage. DDH (Developmental Dyspla

The authors report on a patient with hereditary osteo-onychodysplasia (HOOD). Osteoporosis was demonstrated upon histomorphologic bone examination. HOOD is a rare inherited disorder. Typical features include dysplasia of the nails, patellae, elbows and ilium. Nephropathy occurs in 48% of patients. Numerous renal histologic studies have led to the concept that the nail-patella syndrome is an inherited metabolic disorder affecting the connective tissue. Our findings from histomorphologic bone assessment bring further evidence in support of this hypothesis.

A case of Wilms' tumor in a 67 year-old female is presented. The tumor totally replaced the left kidney with extension to Gerota's fascia, the adrenal gland and ureter, with tumor thrombi in the left renal vein. Multiple bony metastases to the skull, shoulder, rib, ilium, acetabulum and femur were noted also. Microscopically, the tumor was composed predominantly of blastemal tissue with diffuse anaplasia with areas of tubular differentiation and chondroid elements. Clear cell nests were found in the proximal ureter with gradual maturation downward.

Two patients with documented anteroposterior compression injuries to the pelvis sustained concomitant injury to the iliofemoral artery and fracture of the acetabulum involving the high anterior column (the portion of the ilium forming the anterior component of the acetabulum). In a series of 800 major pelvic fractures similar arterial injuries have not occurred in association with other documented mechanisms. A high index of suspicion for iliofemoral artery injuries should be held by the clinician treating patients with acetabular fractures of the high anterior column sustained from anteropost

By using A-frame instrumentation and direct distraction force, an exceptional correction can be obtained in patients with severe spondylolisthesis. Adolescent progressive spondylolisthesis should be considered as an entity separate from the lumbosacral anomalies such as spondylolysis and grades 0 and 1 spondylolisthesis without progression. An aplastic relationship appears to exist between the sacrum and the posterior superior wing of the ilium in the adolescent with progressive spondylolisthesis. Complications have been minimal but long-term observations of patients are necessary to evaluate

OBJECTIVE: Improved accuracy of spinal instrumentation with the use of intraoperative CT (iCT).
INDICATIONS: All types of posterior spinal instrumentation.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: None.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After fixation of the spinal clamp, an intraoperative CT (iCT) is performed. The image data set can then be used for navigation of the spinal implants. The arrangement of the devices, positioning of the patient, and the exact fixation of the clamp depend on the operation technique and the anatomical region. A high level of standardization is necessary for clinical success. In general, the util

Finite element method (FEM) was used to investigate the biomechanical properties of three types of surgical fixations of U-shaped sacral fractures. Based on a previously established and validated complete lumbar-pelvic model, three models of surgical fixations of U-shaped sacral fractures were established: ① S1S2 passed through screw (S1S2), ② L4-L5 pedicle screw + screw for wing of ilium (L4L5 + IS), and ③ L4-L5 pedicle screw + S1 passed through screw + screw for wing of ilium (L4L5 + S1 + IS). A 400 N force acting vertically downward, along with torque of 7.5 N·m in different directions (ant

The pelvic skeleton is formed via endochondral ossification. However, it is not known how the normal cartilage is formed before ossification occurs. Furthermore, the overall timeline of cartilage formation and the morphology of the cartilage in the pelvis are unclear. In this study, cartilage formation in the pelvic skeletons of 25 human fetuses (crown-rump length [CRL] = 11.9-75.0 mm) was observed using phase-contrast computed tomography and 7T magnetic resonance imaging. The chondrification center of the ilium, ischium, and pubis first appeared simultaneously at Carnegie stage (CS) 18, was l

BACKGROUND: Sciatic nerve injury is a disastrous adverse complication of surgery and can cause debilitating pain, functional impairment and poor quality of life. Patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) have a high incidence of sciatic nerve injury after total hip arthroplasty (THA). A better understanding of the course of the sciatic nerve in patients with DDH may help minimise the risk of sciatic nerve injury after THA.
METHODS: A total of 35 adult patients with unilateral DDH were enrolled in this retrospective study. We reviewed the patients' computed tomography (CT) scans,

Extensive osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions were observed on the skeletal remains of an adult male excavated from an Early Bronze Age cemetery dated to 4556+32 years BP, located in the Cis-Baikal region of Siberia (Russian Federation). Lytic lesions ranged in size from several mm to over 60 mm in diameter and had irregular, moth-eaten borders. Many of these lesions destroyed trabecular bone, though a hollowed shell of cortical bone often remained observable. Radiographic analysis revealed numerous lytic lesions within trabecular bone that had not yet affected the cortex. Blastic lesions were
