Guessing imagined and live chance events: adults behave like children with live events.

Growing evidence suggests that internal migration experience shapes future internal migration behavior. However, it remains unclear what stage of the decision-making process past internal migration facilitates and whether the impact depends on the distance moved. To advance understanding of the role of past migration, we explicitly and dynamically link migration experiences to the formation and realization of future internal migration intentions by blending the aspiration-ability framework with the learned behavior hypothesis. We empirically test our proposition by fitting a series of logistic

Regulating emotion during imaginal exposure to social anxiety: impact of the specificity of information processing.

The present study investigates the emotional impact of a specific vs. generic mode of information processing during imaginal exposure. Forty-nine socially anxious students mentally relived a personally experienced stressful social situation. Half of the participants were instructed to activate generic elements of the target event (i.e., elements repetitively experienced in similar social situations); the other half had to recall the specific features of the target event. Results showed that participants who focused on specific elements reported less distress than those who focused on generic f

Children on the borderlands of autism: differential characteristics in social, imaginative, communicative and repetitive behaviour domains.

A sample of 37 children aged 4-7 years who all showed some autistic features was investigated. Children with a primary diagnosis of autism were compared with those diagnosed with a language disorder, on behaviours within four domains; social behaviour, imaginative activities, repetitive behaviour and communication. The aim was to identify potentially differentiating features of the two groups using observational ratings and questionnaire measures provided by parents and teachers. Information on participants' intelligence and language skills was also collected. The children with autism showed g

The treatment of fear of flying: a controlled study of imaginal and virtual reality graded exposure therapy.

The goal of this study was to determine if virtual reality graded exposure therapy (VRGET) was equally efficacious, more efficacious, or less efficacious, than imaginal exposure therapy in the treatment of fear of flying. Thirty participants (Age = 39.8 +/- 9.7) with confirmed DSM-IV diagnosis of specific phobia fear of flying were randomly assigned to one of three groups: VRGET with no physiological feedback (VRGETno), VRGET with physiological feedback (VRGETpm), or systematic desensitization with imaginal exposure therapy (IET). Eight sessions were conducted once a week. During each session,

Drawing a stripe in Drosophila imaginal disks: negative regulation of decapentaplegic and patched expression by engrailed.

During development of the Drosophila adult appendage precursors, the larval imaginal disks, the decapentaplegic (dpp) gene is expressed in a stripe just anterior to the anterior/posterior (A/P) compartment boundary. Here, we investigate the genetic controls that lead to production of this stripe. We extend previous observations on leaky engrailed (en) mutations by showing that mutant clones completely lacking both en and invected (inv) activity ectopically express dpp-lacZ reporter genes in the posterior compartment, where dpp activity ordinarily is repressed. Similarly, patched (ptc) is also

The Appearance of "Bastard" Children and the Power of the Maternal Imagination in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period.

The belief in the power of the imagination of parents, and especially of the mother, to influence the features of the foetus has been widespread since ancient times. The first reference is in Genesis 30:25-43. It tells the story of how Jacob showed his father-in-law's ewes and goats coloured branches (stripped branches) during the mating season in order to produce spotted offspring. The theory refers not only to animals, but also to human beings, as various sources testify. The power of female imagination could extend from the moment of coitus through to the entire pregnancy, giving rise to co

Re-imagining space: Conceptualizing new psychological interventions against segregationist attitudes and behaviours.

Drawing on theories, concepts and empirical evidence from the fields of human geography, social and environmental psychology, this paper argues for space-based interventions as new psychological interventions aiming to address segregationist attitudes and behaviours among co-located groups. The main premise of this argument is that engaging in spatial experiences that cause people to challenge their existing notions of place will impact socio-spatial processes that propagate segregationist practices. These processes concern how people view and attach to their place and how they regard antagoni

Imagining the Future or Recalling the Past: Effects on State Attachment Security Through Episodic Priming.

The current study examined whether imagining a future secure relationship can increase state attachment security to a degree comparable to recalling a secure past or current relationship. In a within-subjects design, 88 participants completed three weekly tasks: future thinking, episodic recall, and a neutral shopping control. Each session involved a brief imagery-and-writing task followed immediately by state attachment measures. Compared with the neutral control, both relational priming tasks were associated with higher state attachment security, and the future and recall tasks did not diffe

Neural Representations in Visual and Parietal Cortex Differentiate between Imagined, Perceived, and Illusory Experiences.

Humans constantly receive massive amounts of information, both perceived from the external environment and imagined from the internal world. To function properly, the brain needs to correctly identify the origin of information being processed. Recent work has suggested common neural substrates for perception and imagery. However, it has remained unclear how the brain differentiates between external and internal experiences with shared neural codes. Here we tested this question in human participants (male and female) by systematically investigating the neural processes underlying the generation

Cortical activation during imagined walking for people with lower limb loss: a pilot study.

Each year in Canada, a substantial number of adults undergo limb amputation, with lower limb amputation (LLA) the most prevalent. Enhancing walking ability is crucial for optimizing rehabilitation outcomes, promoting participation, and facilitating community reintegration. Overcoming challenges during the acute post-amputation phase and sub-acute rehabilitation necessitates alternative approaches, such as motor imagery and mental practice, to maximize rehabilitation success. However, the current evidence on activation patterns using motor imagery in individuals with LLA is limited. The primary

When resilience is not enough: Imagining novel approaches to supporting Black youth navigating racism.

The narrative surrounding the impact racism has had on the well-being of Black youth has shifted across sociocultural and historical context. Early discourse around these topics were problem-saturated, focusing on deficits "within" Black youth. Over time, an important narrative shift occurred: greater attention was paid to the inherent assets of Black youth, their families, and communities, including how racial-ethnic protective factors such as racial socialization afforded them resilience. What resulted was decades of research seeking to understand the mechanisms that allow Black youth to bou

Association of breast cancer with MRI background parenchymal enhancement: the IMAGINE case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) on breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be associated with breast cancer risk, but previous studies of the association are equivocal and limited by incomplete blinding of BPE assessment. In this study, we evaluated the association between BPE and breast cancer based on fully blinded assessments of BPE in the unaffected breast. METHODS: The Imaging and Epidemiology (IMAGINE) study is a multicenter breast cancer case-control study of women receiving diagnostic, screening, or follow-up breast MRI, recruited from three comprehensive canc

Neural activation for actual and imagined movement following unilateral hand transplantation: a case study.

Transplantation of a donor hand has been successful as a surgical treatment following amputation, but little is known regarding the brain mechanisms contributing to the recovery of motor function. We report functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) findings for neural activation related to actual and imagined movement, for a 54-year-old male patient, who had received a donor hand transplant 50 years following amputation. Two assessments, conducted 3 months and 6 months post-operatively, demonstrate engagement of motor-control related brain regions for the transplanted hand, during both actu

Music, clicks, and their imaginations favor differently the event-based timing component for rhythmic movements.

The involvement or noninvolvement of a clock-like neural process, an effector-independent representation of the time intervals to produce, is described as the essential difference between event-based and emergent timing. In a previous work (Bravi et al. in Exp Brain Res 232:1663-1675, 2014a. doi: 10.1007/s00221-014-3845-9 ), we studied repetitive isochronous wrist's flexion-extensions (IWFEs), performed while minimizing visual and tactile information, to clarify whether non-temporal and temporal characteristics of paced auditory stimuli affect the precision and accuracy of the rhythmic motor p

Imagine that: elevated sensory strength of mental imagery in individuals with Parkinson's disease and visual hallucinations.

Visual hallucinations occur when our conscious experience does not accurately reflect external reality. However, these dissociations also regularly occur when we imagine the world around us in the absence of visual stimulation. We used two novel behavioural paradigms to objectively measure visual hallucinations and voluntary mental imagery in 19 individuals with Parkinson's disease (ten with visual hallucinations; nine without) and ten healthy, age-matched controls. We then used this behavioural overlap to interrogate the connectivity both within and between the major attentional control netwo
