Following development and validation of a radioimmunoassay for somatostatin, the immunoreactivity of this peptide in the plasma of ruminants was measured and the levels in sheep were 9-31 pM (mean 18 +/- 7 pM, n = 48), in lambs 10-54 pM (mean 25 +/- 10 pM, n = 18) and in calves 5-35 pM (mean 12 +/- 6 pM, n = 22). Somatostatin-like immunoreactivity was present in sheep in high concentrations in the antrum (2342 +/- 280 pmol/g wet weight), duodenum (446 +/- 73 pmol/g) and pancreas (832 +/- 208 pmol/g). Lower concentrations (6-150 pmol/g) were found in other regions of the gastrointestinal tract.

A monoclonal antibody, 8D9, has been obtained that binds to axons in the chick nervous system. Biochemical and immunological experiments indicate that the 8D9 antigen is related to the mouse L1 cell-adhesion molecule. The results of immunohistochemical experiments using monoclonal antibody 8D9 to study the development of the chick visual system are consistent with the 8D9 antigen functioning in axon fasciculation.

An immunoperoxidase technique with monoclonal antibodies for the identification of lymphocyte subsets and MHC Class II antigens was applied to oesophageal biopsies from two patients with herpetic oesophagitis. Oesophageal epithelial cells were found to express the MHC Class II antigen. The inflammatory infiltrate of the lamina propria was composed of both B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been shown that Ljungan virus (LV) is associated with disease in its wild rodent reservoir. In addition, it has been demonstrated that LV causes malformations and perinatal death in a mouse model. The question was therefore raised whether LV is a zoonotic agent in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in human nasal polyps.
METHOD: CFTR were studied in 28 cases of nasal polyps and 7 cases of normal turbinate mucosae with immunochemistry staining.

We report a unique case of a 44-year-old man with paraneoplastic hyperparathyroidism due to an oncocytic adrenocortical carcinoma (stage pT3N0R0M0, ENSAT 2 with a 4% Ki-67).
