Supernumerary eumorphic mandibular incisor in association with aggressive periodontitis.

According to the literature, the prevalence of supernumerary teeth is 1% to 4% of permanent dentitions; and among these, the presence of fifth mandibular incisor - a supernumerary eumorphic tooth - has rarely been described in literature, and its association with localized aggressive periodontitis is an even more rare entity. This paper reports a very rare case of unusual association of supernumerary eumorphic fifth mandibular incisor with aggressive periodontitis in a Muslim individual, so that these findings generate curiosity and inspire others to carry out further studies and investigation

Orthodontic treatment of a congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor.

UNLABELLED: Clinicians agree that, regardless of gender or race, tooth agenesis has become more prominent in recent societies. The congenital absence of one or more maxillary lateral incisors poses a challenge to effective treatment planning for the restorative dentist. However, the one-sided orthodontic approach of just moving canines mesially to eliminate restorative procedures leads to compromise. Adult patients presenting with malocclusions, missing lateral incisors, or anterior crowding but who fail to get proper orthodontic treatment, requesting instead esthetic solutions that do not est

[Two cases of solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome].

Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome (SMMCI) syndrome is a unique developmental abnormality arising from an unknown event occurring between the 35th and 38th days in utero, and involving mieline structure of the head including the cranial bones, the maxilla and its container dentition (specifically the central incisor tooth germ), together with other midline structures of the body. The SMMCI tooth may be possibly occur as an isolated trait or in association with many other midline developmental anomalies. It is estimated to occur in 1:50000 live births. There is a wide variabilit

Molar incisor hypomineralisation: clinical management of the young patient.

Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a common developmental condition resulting in enamel defects in first permanent molars and permanent incisors. It presents at eruption of these teeth. Early diagnosis is essential since rapid breakdown of tooth structure may occur, giving rise to acute symptoms and complicated treatment. The purpose of this article is to review MIH and illustrate its clinical management in young children.

Case report: autotransplantation for a missing permanent maxillary incisor.

Patients with nonrestorable or missing anterior teeth are typically seen by their general or pediatric dentist who directs the course of consultation, referral, and treatment. In the mixed dentition stage, loss of permanent maxillary incisors is usually treated by various forms of removable/fixed prosthetic appliances. Because premolars are developing during this time period, transplantation of an available premolar to an incisor position is a viable alternative, that may provide a better biological substitute for a missing incisor than other choices. The purpose of this case report was to des

Supplemental mandibular permanent incisor teeth: report of two cases.

Two cases of supplemental mandibular permanent incisors are presented. These supernumerary teeth often erupt into the dental arches causing crowding and aesthetic problems. Management may range from simple extraction of the supernumerary teeth to comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Early diagnosis may provide better opportunity for optimal treatment outcome.

Single maxillary central incisor, holoprosencephaly, and holoprosencephaly-like phenotype.

Three patients--one with alobar holoprosencephaly and two with a holoprosencephaly-like phenotype--are reported with no identifiable mutations. In each case, one parent had a single maxillary central incisor (SMCI). We briefly review the holoprosencephaly-like phenotype and present a table of 25 conditions with SMCI.

Two cases with supernumerary teeth in lower incisor region.

Abnormalities in number of teeth are occasionally noted in clinical cases. Many theories have been proposed as regards the causes of the occurrence of supernumerary teeth, including atavism theory, mechanical tooth germ separation theory, tissue induction theory, and dental laminar morphological disturbance theory. However, none of these theories alone offers a sufficient explanation for this phenomenon. The incidence of supernumerary permanent teeth is approximately 1-3%. These are the maxillary anterior teeth, the maxillary molars, and the maxillo-mandibular premolars in terms of descending

Maxillary canine transposition to incisor site: a rare condition.

Tooth transposition is defined as positional interchange of 2 adjacent teeth within the same quadrant. The incidence has been reported as about 0.4%, and the maxillary permanent canine has been reported as the tooth most frequently involved. Several etiologic factors like genetics, interchange in position of the developing tooth buds, trauma, mechanical interferences, and early loss of incisors have been associated with tooth transposition. Articles in the literature report various kinds of transpositions, but there are only a few reported cases of transposition of the maxillary canine to cent

Endodontic and surgical treatment of a geminated maxillary incisor.

AIM: A geminated maxillary incisor required complex multidisciplinary treatment to preserve health and restore aesthetics. This report describes the coordination of coronal division, root extraction, bone grafting, endodontic treatment and orthodontics in achieving treatment goals. It is the intention of this report to show how a difficult case could be managed by properly coordinated multidisciplinary care. SUMMARY: Pulp testing of the geminated central right maxillary incisor gave a normal response. Radiographic investigation indicated a connection of the pulp chambers. Both the mesial and

Maxillary incisor impaction and its relationship to canine displacement.

This study aimed to examine the eruption status of unerupted maxillary permanent canines in patients who also had an impacted central incisor. Seventy-five unilateral cases of the incisor anomaly were retrospectively examined. Using the initial panoramic films, we assessed the positions of the ipsilateral and contralateral canines and the lateral incisors and the timing (eruption progress) of the canines. The final position of the canines was evaluated from patient records and progress photographs. The data showed a significant increase in prevalence and severity of displaced canines in the ip

Focal cemento-osseous dysplasia involving a mandibular lateral incisor.

AIM: To report a case of focal cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) affecting a single tooth misdiagnosed as an inflammatory periapical lesion. SUMMARY: The patient, a black 47-year-old woman complained of pain affecting the right side of the mandible. Routine X-ray examination discovered a periapical radiolucency on the mandibular left lateral incisor (tooth 32), which was otherwise normal and not carious. As the response of this tooth to a vitality test was doubtful, the lesion was diagnosed as a periapical granuloma or cyst secondary to pulpal necrosis. Endodontic treatment and curettage of th

Intentional surgical repositioning of an ankylosed permanent maxillary incisor.

Replacement resorption (ankylosis) may be a significant complication after replantation of avulsed permanent incisor teeth. This report explains the aetiology, diagnosis, management and current treatment options in ankylosis and then describes an alternative surgical technique, intentional luxation and repositioning. This technique, in the presence of an acceptable root length, may be a realistic treatment option in adolescence until osseointegrated implants can be considered at the age of 18-20 years.

Primary incisor restoration using resin-veneered stainless steel crowns.

The restoration of primary incisors with extensive caries lesions is a clinical challenge of severe dimensions. Not only are these teeth difficult to restore, but the patient's behavior can affect the treatment negatively. Requirements for an acceptable restoration include natural color; durability; adhesive cementation that is biocompatible with the pulp; easily and rapidly placed; requires only one treatment visit. Compared to other options, stainless steel crowns are the easiest to place. The most attractive restoration for these cases today is the adhesively bonded resin-composite crown, m

Resorption of the lateral maxillary incisor: assessment by CT.

Computed tomography of the maxillary alveolar arch was performed in three children with delayed eruption of one or both maxillary cuspids. Computed tomography demonstrated close contact between the ectopically localized and nonerupted canine and the lateral incisor. The lesion was unilateral in two patients and bilateral in one. In two patients resorption of the lateral incisor root was demonstrated. Moreover, CT permitted exact determination of the extent of the lesion by differentiating between superficial cementodentine resorption limited to the cementodentine (superficial resorption) and r
