Clinical evaluation of 1% cyclosporine for topical treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is a prevalent and often vision-threatening condition in dogs. In several reports, 2% cyclosporine (cyclosporin A, CsA) was described as effective in modulating the clinical signs of KCS. This study was designed to compare the efficacy of 1% CsA vs a placebo, using a randomized double-blind clinical trial. Topical administration of 1% CsA significantly improved Schirmer wetting values and subjective markers of corneal health as compared with the placebo. In the dogs treated with topical administration of 1% CsA, the clinical signs of KCS were improved in 81.8%

A comparison of diagnostic tests for keratoconjunctivitis sicca: lactoplate, Schirmer, and tear osmolarity.

We compared diagnostic tests for keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in previously diagnosed patients and normal controls to determine the incidence of true negatives (specificity) and true positives (sensitivity). Tear osmolarity testing, the Schirmer filter paper test, and lactoferrin determination by the Lactoplate radial immunodiffusion (RID) method were performed in 20 KCS patients diagnosed on the basis of presenting symptoms and clinical examination. Similar determinations were performed in 20 age- and sex-matched normal control subjects. Mean lactoferrin concentrations in the right eyes o

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca associated with tear gland degeneration.

The clinical tests to diagnose keratoconjunctivitis sicca are weak, whereas the laboratory tests are very powerful, but there is no reason whatsoever to discard the present clinical tests. For example, finding a Schirmer test consistently lower than 5 mm is an easy way to strongly suspect a dry eye state. The level of tear fluid production can help one to determine the preferred viscosity of the tear substitute. Then, what test should be used other than the rose Bengal test to evaluate the over-all effect of the dry eye state on the external eye? What other test than the break-up time is there

Sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. A double masked clinical trial.

The effect of sodium hyaluronate eye drops in the treatment of severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) was evaluated in a double masked crossover trial, comparing the effect of a 0.1% solution, a 0.2% solution and placebo in 20 patients. We found significantly decreased rose bengal staining and increased break-up time following 0.2% treatment compared to placebo. No significant difference was found in the Schirmer values and the cornea sensitivity. The patients significantly preferred sodium hyaluronate treatment. We conclude that sodium hyaluronate eye drops seem to be a valuable new agent in

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in male patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) has not been reported as occurring as a single entity in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) population. In a survey of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infected male patients, the authors found that 21% (9/42) had signs and symptoms compatible with KCS with positive Schirmer test results. Tear osmolarity determinations were obtained from this group and from an age- and sex-matched group of HIV-infected patients without symptoms of KCS and with negative Schirmer test results. Eighty-nine percent of the suspect group had increased tear osmo

Use of linseed oil to treat experimentally induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of various linseed oil (LO) preparations (oral, topical, oral and topical combined) in treating experimentally induced keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in rabbits. Twenty male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups: group C (control), group OLO (oral LO), group TLO (topical LO), and group OTLO (oral and topical LO). The animals were evaluated weekly using Schirmer's tear test (STT), fluorescein test (FT), and Rose Bengal test (RBT) and were euthanized at the end of the experiment for histopathological an

[Chlamydia pneumoniae in the etiology of the keratoconjunctivitis sicca in adult patients (a pilot study)].

AIM: In the pilot study the authors refer to the possible connection between the appearance of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (CP) infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the Department of Ophthalmology, 10 adult patients older than 45 years were followed up during the period of 5.5-7 years, where in the chronic folicular conjunctivitis caused by CP, the KCS was revealed as the same time. METHODS: The chlamydial infection diagnosis was established due to the positivity to the familiar (anti-LPS) and species (anti-CP) immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, and IgA) and to the conj

Congenital keratoconjunctivitis sicca and ichthyosiform dermatosis in the cavalier King Charles spaniel.

OBJECTIVES: To record a previously unreported congenital and hereditary condition affecting the eyes and skin in the cavalier King Charles spaniel. METHODS: Nineteen cases (13 litters) were investigated, with particular reference to eye and skin clinical signs. In addition, five generation pedigrees were obtained and studied from all cases with the exception of one. RESULTS: The eye signs were due to keratoconjunctivitis sicca, a common ocular disease in the dog, but rarely of congenital origin. The skin signs were of an ichthyosiform dermatosis; ichthyosis being a rare skin disease in the d

Tear function parameters in keratoconjunctivitis sicca with and without the association of Sjögren's syndrome.

In a group of patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) associated with Sjögren's syndrome (SJ) a significant decrease in tear fluid lactoferrin concentration and tear film break-up time was demonstrated in comparison with a matched group in which KCS was not associated with any systemic disease. The Schirmer values were also lower in the SJ of patients and these differences almost reached statistical significance. None of these parameters in itself appeared to be of any clinical value to differentiate between KCS that was or was not associated with SJ. The combination of the tear fluid l

Beneficial effect of topical fibronectin in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca of Sjögren's syndrome.

Fibronectin, a high molecular weight plasma protein, was applied locally to 12 patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca of Sjögren's syndrome refractory to conventional treatment. All patients had ophthalmologically proved keratoconjunctivitis sicca of unknown etiology and were suffering from severe eye symptoms. Fibronectin was purified from autologous plasma and administered to the patients as tear drops 3 times a day. All patients responded to the therapy with fewer subjective symptoms and decreased fluorescein staining. All but 3 responded to the therapy as judged by rose bengal test. No a

An in vivo study of corneal surface morphologic features in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

We used wide-field color specular microscopy to study the corneal epithelium of 13 normal subjects and 13 patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The frequencies of small, medium, and large cells were different in the two groups, with a shift to small cells in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Increased uptake of rose bengal dye, filaments, coarse mucus plaques, and pre-exfoliative sheets were also found in the patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. These findings suggest accelerated epithelial cell loss from the surface of the eye in keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
