Evaluating the ability of large Language models to predict human social decisions.

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have highlighted their potential to predict human decisions. In two studies, we compared predictions by GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 across 51 scenarios (9,600 responses) against published data from 2,104 human participants within an evolutionary-psychology framework. We further examined our findings with GPT-4o across eight social-group and kinship conditions (1,600 responses). Our results revealed behavioral differences between humans and LLMs' predictions: Humans showed a greater sensitivity to kinship and group size than the LLMs when making life-death

Leveraging Large Language Models to Advance Certification, Physician Learning, and Diagnostic Excellence.

Diagnostic errors are a significant challenge in health care, often resulting from gaps in physicians' knowledge and misalignment between confidence and diagnostic accuracy. Traditional educational methods have not sufficiently addressed these issues. This commentary explores how large language models (LLMs), a subset of artificial intelligence, can enhance diagnostic education by improving learning transfer and physicians' diagnostic accuracy. The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is integrating LLMs into its Continuous Knowledge Self-Assessment (CKSA) platform to generate high-quality

Integrating clinical guidelines with large language models for improved sepsis mortality prediction.

We develop and validate a clinical guideline-integrated LLM for enhanced sepsis mortality prediction. Using MIMIC-IV data from 24,237 ICU sepsis patients, we fine-tuned a large language model with Low-Rank Adaptation, embedding clinical guidelines into the training process. The model's predictive performance was evaluated using accuracy, F1-score, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Ablation studies assessed the specific contributions of clinical guideline integration. The guideline-enhanced fine-tuned LLM demonstrated moderately higher p

Improving Automated Deep Phenotyping Through Large Language Models Using Retrieval Augmented Generation.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing rare genetic disorders relies on precise phenotypic and genotypic analysis, with the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) providing a standardized language for capturing clinical phenotypes. Traditional HPO tools, such as Doc2HPO and ClinPhen, employ concept recognition to automate phenotype extraction but struggle with incomplete phenotype assignment, often requiring intensive manual review. While large language models (LLMs) hold promise for more context-driven phenotype extraction, they are prone to errors and "hallucinations," making them less reliable without further refi

Psychedelics, the media portrayal and large-language model evaluations.

Psychedelics were used for centuries in healing and spiritual rituals, long before the mid-20th century when they became subjects of biomedical research. Although initial trials generated optimism, these were quickly overshadowed by sensationalist media coverage and political backlash. Following decades of inactivity, research on compounds including 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has resurged, along with the media attention. Investigating this growing interest, Bender et al employed a large-language model, validated against human raters, to analyse 25 years of media articles (2000-20

Crystal structure generation with autoregressive large language modeling.

The generation of plausible crystal structures is often the first step in predicting the structure and properties of a material from its chemical composition. However, most current methods for crystal structure prediction are computationally expensive, slowing the pace of innovation. Seeding structure prediction algorithms with quality generated candidates can overcome a major bottleneck. Here, we introduce CrystaLLM, a methodology for the versatile generation of crystal structures, based on the autoregressive large language modeling (LLM) of the Crystallographic Information File (CIF) format.

A Novel Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Approach for Alzheimer's Disease Detection Using Large Language and Vision-Language Models.

In response to the rapid onset of super-aged societies and the growing prevalence of dementia, our research proposes a multimodal, on-device large language model (LLM)-based agent designed for comprehensive elderly care. Unlike traditional models focused only on dementia diagnosis, our approach leverages a compact, privacy-preserving LLM as the core technology, enabling a wide range of support functions-including cognitive assessment-directly on the device. The pipeline begins with automatic speech recognition (ASR) to convert user speech into text, followed by a vision-language model (VLM) th

Modeling Structure-Building in the Brain With CCG Parsing and Large Language Models.

To model behavioral and neural correlates of language comprehension in naturalistic environments, researchers have turned to broad-coverage tools from natural-language processing and machine learning. Where syntactic structure is explicitly modeled, prior work has relied predominantly on context-free grammars (CFGs), yet such formalisms are not sufficiently expressive for human languages. Combinatory categorial grammars (CCGs) are sufficiently expressive directly compositional models of grammar with flexible constituency that affords incremental interpretation. In this work, we evaluate whethe
