Sources, dynamics in vivo, and application of astaxanthin and lutein in laying hens: A review.

Astaxanthin (Ax) and lutein are important fat-soluble pigments and essential nutrients for human and animal health. Haematococcus pluvialis microalga and Phaffia rhodozyma yeast are ideal species for commercial Ax production. Marigold flowers are a main source of commercial lutein. Dynamics of dietary Ax and lutein in the gastrointestinal tract are similar to lipids, but their activities are tremendously challenged by many physiological and dietary factors; few data are available about these in poultry. Dietary Ax and lutein have insignificant effects on egg production and egg physical propert

Pathological discrimination between luteinized thecoma associated with sclerosing peritonitis and thecoma.

BACKGROUND: Similarities between luteinized thecoma associated with sclerosing peritonitis (LTSP) and thecoma, cause difficulty in clinical differential diagnoses. To improve the situation, we selected 10 specified molecular pathological markers that are frequently used in clinical pathology of ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors to determine whether they exert a discriminatory effect. METHODS: Applying immunohistochemistry, we analyzed the expression of alpha-1,6-mannosylglycoprotein 6-beta-n-acetylglucosaminyltransferase B (MGAT5B), nuclear receptor coactivator 3 (NCOA3), proliferation marker p

Lutein and Zeaxanthin and Their Roles in Age-Related Macular Degeneration-Neurodegenerative Disease.

Lutein and zeaxanthin belong to the xanthophyll family of carotenoids, which are pigments produced by plants. Structurally, they are very similar, differing only slightly in the arrangement of atoms. Key sources of these carotenoids include kale, savoy cabbage, spinach, broccoli, peas, parsley, corn, and egg yolks. The recommended daily intake of lutein is approximately 10.0 mg and that of zeaxanthin is 2 mg. Lutein intake in adults varies, with average intakes being 1-2 mg/day. Due to the lack of synthesis of consumption of these compounds in humans, these substances are extremely important f

Rupture of Bilateral Theca Lutein Cysts During Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Hyperreactio luteinalis is a rare condition characterized by the presence of bilateral theca lutein cysts, which occur rarely in a singleton normal pregnancy. Bilateral multicystic ovarian enlargement occurs due to elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin. We present a rare case of a 23-year-old primigravida in her tenth week of gestation, presenting with an acute abdomen, with increasing abdominal girth, diagnosed with a rupture of theca lutein cyst, and posted for laparotomy. Theca lutein cyst doesn't affect the course of pregnancy and has a spontaneous regression after delivery. Our case

Salivary luteinizing hormone: An open window to detect oestrous period in buffalo.

Silent oestrus is an unsurmountable problem in the management of buffalo reproduction. In addressing this issue, we have earlier reported variation in the levels of urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) through the different phases of oestrous cycle with an extended window during the mid-oestrous phase. Based on this report, the present study is designed to assess the salivary LH levels in buffalo during the different phases of oestrous cycle. Bovine LH ELISA kit was used to determine the level of salivary LH. We observed a notable variation in salivary LH levels during the different phases of oest

Liquid antisolvent precipitation: an effective method for ocular targeting of lutein esters.

BACKGROUND: Lutein ester (LE) is an important carotenoid fatty acid ester. It is a form in which lutein is present in nature and is produced by free non-esterification and fatty acid esterification. LE is one of the safe sources of lutein. Increasing lutein intake can prevent and treat age-related macular degeneration. In addition, it can effectively inhibit gastric cancer, breast cancer, and esophageal cancer. However, the poor aqueous solubility of LE has impeded its clinical applications. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to prepare lutein ester nanoparticles (LE-NPs) by liquid an

Lutein exerts anti-inflammatory effects in patients with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many coronary artery disease (CAD) patients exhibit chronic low-grade inflammation. Carotenoids are anti-oxidants with potential anti-inflammatory properties. Here, we first assessed relationships between interleukin (IL)-6 and individual carotenoids in plasma from CAD patients. Based on the results, we proceeded to assess anti-inflammatory effects of one carotenoid, lutein, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from CAD patients. METHODS: Lutein + zeaxanthin (isomers with lutein being dominant), β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, α- and β-carotene and IL-6 were measured

Effects of the Macular Carotenoid Lutein in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are central to retinal health and homoeostasis. Oxidative stress-induced damage to the RPE occurs as part of the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration and neovascular retinopathies (e.g., retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy). The xanthophyll carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, are selectively taken up by the RPE, preferentially accumulated in the human macula, and transferred to photoreceptors. These macular xanthophylls protect the macula (and the broader retina) via their antioxidant and photo-protective activities. This study wa

Effects of Smad3 on the proliferation and steroidogenesis in human ovarian luteinized granulosa cells.

Granulosa cells (GCs) are essential for proper oocyte, follicular development, and steroidogenesis in the ovary. Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily members are critical in regulating GCs growth and differentiation. Smad3 is known to serve as a signaling intermediate for the TGF-β; however, the functions of Smad3 in the human GCs remain unidentified. In this study, the luteinized GCs collected from follicular aspirates from patients undergoing in vitro fertilization were cultured and engineered to overexpress and knockdown Smad3, which were validated by RT-PCR and Western blotting

A novel neuropeptide in suppressing luteinizing hormone release in goldfish, Carassius auratus.

The fish reproductive axis is regulated by many neuroendocrine factors. However, factors involved in the suppression of this axis are largely uncharacterized. In this study, we describe a novel neuropeptide derived from the spexin precursor acting as a negative factor to suppress the reproductive axis in teleost. The cDNA sequences of the spexin precursors have been cloned from both zebrafish and goldfish. A 14-aa mature peptide with the C-terminal amidated (spexin-14a: NWTPQAMLYLKGTQ-NH2) is conceivably generated by processing of the spexin precursors in both species. Spexin is mainly express

Luteinizing hormone reduction by the male potency herb, Butea superba Roxb.

To determine if Butea superba Roxb., a traditional Thai male potency herb, has androgenic activity in 60-day-old male Wistar rats, we measured its effects on the pituitary-testicular axis and sex organs. Intact and orchidectomized adult male rats were subdivided into five groups (10 rats/group): distilled water, Butea superba (BS)-10, BS-50, BS-250, and testosterone propionate (TP). They received 0, 10, 50, and 250 mg·kg body weight(-1)·day(-1) BS in distilled water by gavage and 6 mg·kg body weight(-1)·day(-1) TP sc, respectively, during the 30-day treatment period. CD36 is involved in lycopene and lutein uptake by adipocytes and adipose tissue cultures.

SCOPE: Carotenoids are mainly stored in adipose tissue. However, nothing is known regarding the uptake of carotenoids by adipocytes. Thus, our study explored the mechanism by which lycopene and lutein, two major human plasma carotenoids, are transported. METHODS AND RESULTS: CD36 was a putative candidate for this uptake, 3T3-L1 cells were treated with sulfosuccinimidyl oleate, a CD36-specific inhibitor. sulfosuccinimidyl oleate-treated cells showed a significant decrease in both lycopene and lutein uptake as compared to control cells. Their uptake was also decreased by partial inhibition of C

Expression of luteinizing hormone/chorionic gonadotropin receptor in the rat pineal gland.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) influences the secretion of melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) from the pineal gland. The present study examined the possible presence of LH/chorionic gonadotropin (CG) receptor in the pineal gland of adult female rats. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analyses demonstrated that LH/CG receptor mRNA is expressed in the pineal gland. Western blotting showed that the pineal gland, like the ovary, contains an 80 kDa receptor protein. Immunohistochemistry revealed that LH/CG receptor, arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (a regulatory enzyme in melatonin
