Surfactant enhanced recovery of tetrachloroethylene from a porous medium containing low permeability lenses. 2. Numerical simulation.

A numerical model of surfactant enhanced solubilization was developed and applied to the simulation of nonaqueous phase liquid recovery in two-dimensional heterogeneous laboratory sand tank systems. Model parameters were derived from independent, small-scale, batch and column experiments. These parameters included viscosity, density, solubilization capacity, surfactant sorption, interfacial tension, permeability, capillary retention functions, and interphase mass transfer correlations. Model predictive capability was assessed for the evaluation of the micellar solubilization of tetrachloroethy

A High Throughput and User-Friendly Computational Tool for Quantifying and Visualizing Symmetry Variation in Image Datasets.

Symmetry is a fundamental property of biological systems, yet it is commonly reduced to discrete, subjective classifications that fail to capture the continuous and graded nature of symmetry in real organisms. We present a high-throughput, user-friendly computational framework for quantifying and visualizing biological symmetry as a continuous variable using transformation information ( T I ), an information theoretic measure that quantifies the divergence between an object and its transformed self. We establish key mathematical properties of T I , including invariance, equivariance, and Lip

Shape parameters of evolutionary trees in theoretical computer science.

Shape parameters, e.g. balance indices, of evolutionary trees have been extensively studied under the Yule model in phylogenetics. Independently, many of the same parameters have also been studied for random binary search trees in computer science, where they measure the running time of algorithms. In fact, under the Yule and binary search tree models, these parameters have the same distribution, resulting in many identical discoveries. In this survey, we explain these connections and introduce some of the tools that have been used in computer science to derive stochastic results for shape par

Mechanistic computational models of cognition across scales and species.

How can theory and mathematical modeling help accelerate research in psychiatry? Here we highlight the promise of computational approaches via three recent trends: multi-scale models of working memory which link receptors and cell-types to brain-wide activity and behavior; the extension of mechanistic computational models from working memory to other cognitive functions including conscious perception, attention and planning; and cross-species comparative models of cognition that give rise to translational computational neuroscience. These developments demonstrate the feasibility of achieving u

Model for computing with population-encoded variables explains neural correlations.

Decoding how the brain computes with variables, such as an object's speed, encoded in populations of neurons is essential for understanding perception, decision-making, and motor control. While experiments consistently reveal correlated firing rates within these populations, the origins of these correlations are still debated. Here, I propose a computational model that carries out operations on population-encoded variables by carefully configuring the connections between neurons through dendritic branches. This model predicts neural correlations as a byproduct of the computation, with correlat

The application of fractal analysis to mammographic tissue classification.

As a first step in determining the efficacy of using computers to assist in diagnosis of medical images, an investigation has been conducted which utilizes the patterns, or textures, in the images. To be of value, any computer scheme must be able to recognize and differentiate the various patterns. An obvious example of this in mammography is the recognition of tumorous tissue and non-malignant abnormal tissue from normal parenchymal tissue. We have developed a pattern recognition technique which uses features derived from the fractal nature of the image. Further, we are able to develop mathem

Mathematical modeling of multi-drugs therapy: a challenge for determining the optimal combinations of antiviral drugs.

In the current era of antiviral drug therapy, combining multiple drugs is a primary approach for improving antiviral effects, reducing the doses of individual drugs, relieving the side effects of strong antiviral drugs, and preventing the emergence of drug-resistant viruses. Although a variety of new drugs have been developed for HIV, HCV and influenza virus, the optimal combinations of multiple drugs are incompletely understood. To optimize the benefits of multi-drugs combinations, we must investigate the interactions between the combined drugs and their target viruses. Mathematical models of

Diffusion tensor brain imaging and tractography.

Diffusion-tensor MR imaging is a promising tool to evaluate white-matter integrity by quantitative and graphic maps including neural fiber tractogram. Current challenges afoot are to obtain higher quality diffusion-weighted MR images (high SNR, isotropic voxel, and high spatial resolution), to create a robust mathematical framework to process the data, to construct a user-friendly computer-based algorithm, to reveal determinants of diffusion process, and to establish analytical methodology.

All about FAX: a Female Adult voXel phantom for Monte Carlo calculation in radiation protection dosimetry.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has created a task group on dose calculations, which, among other objectives, should replace the currently used mathematical MIRD phantoms by voxel phantoms. Voxel phantoms are based on digital images recorded from scanning of real persons by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Compared to the mathematical MIRD phantoms, voxel phantoms are true to the natural representations of a human body. A comparative study of classical and neural network based optimal control in dengue transmission dynamics.

This study develops and analyses a mathematical model that represents dengue transmission between human and mosquito populations. The human population is divided into susceptible, infected, and recovered classes, while the mosquito population is divided into susceptible and infected classes. This model captures interaction between humans and vectors with a number of significant epidemiological parameters governing the spread of disease. In devising effective intervention strategies, two optimal control techniques are considered. The first technique applies Pontryagin's Minimum Principle for ob

Early Detection and Control of the Next Epidemic Wave Using Health Communications: Development of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Tool and Its Validation on COVID-19 Data from the US.

Social media networks highly influence on a broad range of global social life, especially in the context of a pandemic. We developed a mathematical model with a computational tool, called EMIT (Epidemic and Media Impact Tool), to detect and control pandemic waves, using mainly topics of relevance on social media networks and pandemic spread. Using EMIT, we analyzed health-related communications on social media networks for early prediction, detection, and control of an outbreak. EMIT is an artificial intelligence-based tool supporting health communication and policy makers decisions. Thus, EMI

The mechanical ventilator settings in patients with respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during episodes of acute respiratory failure (ARF) is not a simple task that in most cases is successful based on the experience of physicians. This paper describes an interactive tool based in mathematical models, developed to make easier the study of the interaction between a mechanical ventilator and a patient. It describes all stages of system development, including simulated ventilatory modes, the pathologies of interest and interaction between the user and the system

[Clinical aspects of a virtual operating room for the prediction of operative interventions in some disease of the middle ear].

Clinical aspects of creating a software system for simulation and prediction of operative interventions and hearing function changes are considered. The system will make simulation and prediction transparent and convenient for the user. The technical challenge is to create mediation languages which enforce rigorous mathematical computation while supporting intuitive behaviour. The prevalent textual interface of command lines and pull-down menus is replaced by physical behaviour within an environment. The system is based on new possibilities of computer-integrated environments for problem solvi

[Diagnostic algorithm for chronic polyposis rhinosinusitis in elderly patients.].

This article discusses the features of the diagnosis of chronic polyposis rhinosinusitis in elderly patients. This problem is associated with age-related changes in physiology and anatomical features of the nasal structures and paranasal sinuses. The article substantiates the need to study the manifestations of endothelial dysfunction as a link in the pathogenesis of the development of chronic pathology. The article provides an example of developing a diagnostic algorithm using modern technologies in the form of a computer program. The study involved 109 people aged 60-72 with chronic polyposi

Octupolar approximation for the excluded volume of axially symmetric convex bodies.

We propose a simply computable formula for the excluded volume of convex, axially symmetric bodies, based on the classical Brunn-Minkoski theory for convex bodies, which is briefly outlined in an Appendix written in a modern mathematical language. This formula is applied to cones and spherocones, which are regularized cones; a shape-reconstruction algorithm is able to generate the region in space inaccessible to them and to compute their excluded volume, which is found to be in good agreement with our approximate analytical formula. Finally, for spherocones with an appropriately tuned amplitud

Probabilistic Modeling of Pseudorabies Virus Infection in a Neural Circuit.

Viral transneuronal tracing methods effectively label synaptically connected neurons in a time-dependent manner. However, the modeling of viral vectors has been largely absent. An objective of this article is to motivate and initiate a basis for computational modeling of viral labeling and the questions that can be investigated through modeling of pseudorabies virus (PRV) virion progression in a neural circuit. In particular, a mathematical model is developed for quantitative analysis of PRV infection. Probability expressions are presented to evaluate the progression of viral labeling along th

A possibility to identify the vehicle driver through complex forensic and criminalistic expertise--case report.

Traffic accidents can have more or less dramatic consequences that involve penal and civil responsibility with amplitude extending over long periods of time. In many cases, substitution of the driver with the passenger in order to avoid criminal responsibility is often remarked. The substitution takes place with the passenger's agreement or, in cases with dramatic consequences (coma or death), without his/her consent. These situations are encountered in civil cases regarding insurance fraud. In addition to forensic medical expertise, to aid the experts, mathematical modeling and computer simul
