[The role of cognitive emotional self-regulation in adolescence in levels of depression, psychosomatic symptoms and subjective well-being].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: More and more studies suggest that mental health may be determined by processes of emotional self-regulation. Emotion regulation is a complex concept which can be explicit and implicit and includes different cognitive and behavioral processes: evaluation, modifying of emotional reaction to accomplish goals. Our research aim was to explore the use of cognitive emotional self-regulation strategies related to mental health indicators among adolescents. METHOD: The youth study was performed with a sample size of 1245 participants in Makó, in 2016. Data collection

Extracting common processes across psychotherapies through AI.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological treatments are effective in addressing mental disorders. However, they often remain confined within two primary limitations: diagnostic categories and theoretical frameworks. This study aimed to investigate how artificial intelligence could help transcend these boundaries. METHOD: We recruited 125 psychotherapists. For each psychotherapeutic approach, we asked them to describe: (1) the proposed processes underlying psychopathology; (2) the techniques employed in treatment; and (3) potential factors contributing to resistance. RESULTS: By applying topic modeling te

Facilitators and barriers to collaboration between drug courts and community-based medication for opioid use disorder providers.

INTRODUCTION: Access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is limited for individuals in drug courts - programs that leverage sanctions for mandatory substance use treatment. Drug courts rely on community agencies to provide MOUD. However, relationships with MOUD agencies, which impact access to treatment, are understudied. We examined barriers and facilitators from drug court staffs' perspectives to understand how to enhance collaborations with MOUD providers. METHODS: Drug court staff (n = 21) from seven courts participated in semi-structured interviews about their experience in col

Physiological aspects of information processing in the basal ganglia of normal and parkinsonian primates.

There are two views as to the character of basal-ganglia processing - processing by segregated parallel circuits or by information sharing. To distinguish between these views, we studied the simultaneous activity of neurons in the output stage of the basal ganglia with cross-correlation techniques. The firing of neurons in the globus pallidus of normal monkeys is almost always uncorrelated. However, after dopamine depletion and induction of parkinsonism by treatment with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), oscillatory activity appeared and the firing of many neurons became cor

Perception and action in depth.

Little is known about distance processing in patients with posterior brain damage. Although many investigators have claimed that distance estimates are normal or abnormal in some of these patients, many of these observations were made informally and the examiners often asked for relative, and not absolute, distance estimates. The present investigation served two purposes. First, we wanted to contrast the use of distance information in peripersonal space for perceptual report as opposed to visuomotor control in our visual form agnosic patient, DF. Second, we wanted to see to what extent her abi

Disruption of motor imagery performance following inhibition of the left inferior parietal lobe.

The left inferior parietal lobe (IPL), a brain region localized to the ventro-dorsal stream, is known to be critical to motor imagery (MI) performance. Yet its specific role in processes underlying MI, namely the generation, maintenance, manipulation, and controllability of motor images, is conflicting in the literature. To determine the specific role of the left IPL in MI, the current study sought to examine the effect inhibition of the left IPL has on performance on two disparate measures thought to probe different MI processes within the same participants. Participants (N = 31) completed th

Affective Working Memory: An Integrative Psychological Construct.

When people ruminate about an unfortunate encounter with a loved one, savor a long-sought accomplishment, or hold in mind feelings from a marvelous or regretfully tragic moment, what mental processes orchestrate these psychological phenomena? Such experiences typify how affect interacts with working memory, which we posit can occur in three primary ways: emotional experiences can modulate working memory, working memory can modulate emotional experiences, and feelings can be the mental representations maintained by working memory. We propose that this last mode constitutes distinct neuropsychol

Sexual and gender identity differences in mental health concerns as a function of social media use and cyberbullying among U.S. youth.

As adolescents increasingly engage with social media, concerns have emerged about its potential implications for youth mental health and about disparities in digital experiences by sexual orientation (SO) and gender identity (GI). However, the mechanisms linking social media use (SMU) to mental health and SOGI disparities in digital contexts remain unclear. Using nationally representative data from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS; n = 12,773), the current study examines associations between SMU, cyberbullying, and mental health concerns (i.e., sadness and suicidal ideation), with att

Mental fatigue and return to well-being in athletes: roles of cognitive reappraisal, gender, and alcohol consumption.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of mental fatigue awareness on psychological recovery processes in athletes. It also examines the mediating role of cognitive reappraisal and the moderating effects of gender and alcohol use. A sample of 639 active athletes from diverse regions of Turkey participated in the online study. Data were collected through the Sport Psychological Recovery Scale, the Emotion Regulation Scale for Athletes, and the Mental Fatigue Awareness Scale in Athletes. The findings indicate that mental fatigue awareness has a direct, negative effect on recovery (β = -0.252

An event-related potential study on the time course of mental rotation in upper-limb amputees.

OBJECTIVE: Mental rotation of body parts involves sequential cognitive processes, including visual processing, categorization and the mental rotation process itself. However, how these processes are affected by the amputation of a limb is still unclear. METHODS: Twenty-five right upper-limb amputees and the same number of matched healthy controls participated in a hand mental rotation task. Thirty-two-channel electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded and the event-related potentials (ERPs) were analyzed. RESULTS: In the early visual processing phase, amputees and controls showed a similar P1

"Just trying to make it work:" A qualitative exploration of healthcare provider implementation considerations for integrating mental health and HIV care in central Uganda.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing push to integrate mental health services within HIV care in Uganda. Given the limited mental healthcare infrastructure in the country and growing burden of mental health issues among the HIV positive patients, there is a critical need to understand 1) What are the current practices, routines, barriers, and facilitators that influence providers' ability to address their patients' mental health needs? 2) How do providers navigate this environment to provide mental healthcare? METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 healthcare provide

Role of kin and nonkin support in the mental health of low-income women.

Data from the Worcester Family Research Project were analyzed to determine whether social support processes are altered by poverty and whether kin and nonkin support are differentially related to mental health in low-income mothers. The authors found that conflict with family and friends predicted adverse mental health and more strongly predicted these outcomes than emotional and instrumental support. Moreover, sibling conflict was a stronger predictor of mental health than parent conflict. Finally, only instrumental support from professionals predicted mental health.

Perspective matters in recovery: the views of persons with severe mental illness, family and mental health professionals on collaboration during recovery, a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Recovery from severe mental illness, including psychosis has been described as a personal and unique process, but it rarely is a journey undertaken without profound influences of significant others (family, mental health professionals). Diverging perspectives between persons with severe mental illness, family and professionals are frequent during the recovery process, notably in psychotic disorders. We aimed to explore processes of collaboration during recovery, to inform recovery supporting practices. METHODS: Current qualitative study had a participatory design and was set withi

The association between pregnancy processes, preterm delivery, low birth weight, and postpartum depressions--the need for interdisciplinary integration.

Pregnancy and peripartum/perinatal periods are characterized by significant biologic as well as psychosocial processes and changes that influence the 2 individuals at focus (mother and fetus), as well as their interactions with the immediate environment. Multiple intertwined pathologic pregnancy processes (hormonal, biologic, stress and other mental occurrences) may lead to fetal distress, preterm delivery (PTD), low birth weight (LBW), and other delivery complications as well as to postpartum disorders. PTD and LBW in particular have been demonstrated to be associated with significant mortali

Predictors of Mental Health Recovery in Homeless Adults with Mental Illness.

For people with mental illness, experiences of homelessness can complicate mental health recovery processes. This study used longitudinal data from a randomized controlled trial of housing first (HF) to examine predictors of recovery among homeless people with mental illness. Findings showed that health and community predictors were most strongly associated with mental health recovery. Receipt of HF did not have any effect on changes in recovery scores at follow-up. Overall, the findings suggest that interventions aimed at preventing chronic homelessness, strengthening social networks and comm

Retrieval failures in face naming.

Several authors have reported that the incidence of retrieval failures is higher for people's names than for object names. The first aim of the paper was to evaluate the role of one factor that might contribute to making face naming difficult. Face naming usually requires the retrieval of one specific label: the name of the seen individual. Object naming is less restricting. First, object names may have synonyms. Second, labels available from different levels of categorisation of an object may be appropriate to name that object (e.g. trousers, jeans, Levis). Such a degree of freedom does not e

The Rejection Sensitivity Model as a Framework for Understanding Sexual Minority Mental Health.

Sexual minorities are disproportionately affected by mental health problems (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, suicidality). Minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework have become the predominant conceptual models used to explain these disparities, and they have led to substantial advances in research on stigma-related stress and mental health. However, the field's reliance on these models has limited the extent to which other theories have been considered as potential frameworks for further advancing our understanding of sexual minority mental health.
