Hemotropic mycoplasmas are common pathogens in animals, but it remains unclear what role these pathogens play in human infections. We report clinical and biologic characterization of Candidatus Mycoplasma haemohominis infection in a 42-year-old man in Japan. The patient had severe hemophagocytic syndrome 1 month after an accidental needlestick injury. Metagenomic deep sequencing identified Candidatus M. haemohominis and determined its draft genome for an isolate from serum of the patient. A high copy number of the Candidatus M. haemohominis genome was detected in serum and bone marrow samples.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae) is the primary agent of enzootic pneumonia, a chronic and economically important respiratory disease of pigs. Control and prevention of M. hyopneumoniae infections can be accomplished by optimization of management and housing conditions, and by vaccination. The present paper summarizes the current knowledge on the main characteristics and efficacy of antimicrobials used for the treatment of clinical M. hyopneumoniae infections, the in vitro and in vivo activities of these antimicrobials and the reported resistance mechanisms against some. Potentially

Mycoplasma hominis, a commensal of the genital tract, is a potential underestimated pathogen causing both genitourinary and extragenital infections including neonatal infections. Septic arthritis, prosthetic joint infection, central nervous system (CNS) infections, infective endocarditis and abscess formation are common extragenital infections associated mainly with immunocompromised patients. Mycoplasma hominis lipoproteins play an important role in pathogenicity and directly interact with the host immune system. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the mainstay of diagnosis. Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a common cause of community acquired pneumonia in school aged children but rarely causes pericardial and pleural effusions in a previously healthy host. We report an adolescent presenting with pericardial effusion with tamponade and pleural effusions most likely caused by MP infection. Definitive diagnosis of pericardial effusion is a challenge even when pericardial fluid or tissue is available. Serology is the mainstay of diagnosis. IgM is a reliable indicator of recent MP infection, but rising titers are needed which could delay diagnosis. Pericardial effusion w

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common pathogen that causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections in people of all ages, responsible for up to 40% of community-acquired pneumonias. It also causes a wide array of extrapulmonary infections and autoimmune phenomena. Phylogenetic studies of the organism have been generally restricted to specific genes or regions of the genome, because whole genome sequencing has been completed for only 4 strains. To better understand the physiology and pathogenicity of this important human pathogen, we performed comparative genomic analysis of 15 str

Macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) is highly prevalent in Asia and is now being reported from Europe. Few data on MRMP are available in the United States. Using genotypic and phenotypic methods, we detected high-level MRMP in 13.2% of 91 M. pneumoniae--positive specimens from 6 US locations.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory tract infections (RTI's), especially in children. While severe M. pneumoniae infections are generally treated with antibiotics, the diagnosis as well as treatment of these infections should be reconsidered in the light of recent clinical findings. First, M. pneumoniae was found to be carried in the upper respiratory tract of a relatively high percentage of healthy, asymptomatic children. Clearly, this complicates the diagnosis of a suspected M. pneumoniae RTI and, thus, the decision when to initiate treatment. A complication in the treatme

Mycoplasma genitalium is considered the smallest self-replicating cell. It was first isolated in 1981, from 2 of 13 men with urethritis. Mycoplasma genitalium causes urethritis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease. Because of difficulties in cultivation, the diagnosis is based exclusively on PCR methodology. The recommended therapy for Mycoplasma genitalium infections is azithromycin or doxycycline. Development of macrolide resistance was shown to correlate with treatment failure.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes up to 10-40 % of community-acquired pneumonias. The incidence of M. pneumoniae pneumonia is greatest among children and young adults. The symptoms of M. pneumoniae upper and lower respiratory infections are usually mild and often self-limited. The most frequent extrapulmonary complications present in CNS, heart and skin. The skin affiliations are usually transient erythematous maculopapular or vesicular rashes but may sometimes evolve into Stevens-Johnson syndrome. M. pneumoniae is one of the most common microbe behind the infectious causes of SJS. We present a pat

Mycoplasma agalactiae is the main cause of contagious agalactia, a serious disease of sheep and goats, which has major clinical and economic impacts. We have developed a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme using the sequenced genomes of the M. agalactiae strains PG2 and 5632. An MLST scheme based on the genes gltX, metS, gyrB, tufA and dnaA was designed and in total 3468 bp of sequence were analysed for each strain. MLST offers a highly discriminatory typing method for M. agalactiae and was capable of subdividing 53 strains into 17 distinct sequence types, largely according to geographica

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia, but this organism can also affect almost every organ system besides the lung. Neurological manifestations (meningitis, encephalitis, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barrè syndrome) are the most frequent extrapulmonary complications of Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We report a case of a immunocompetent child affected by encephalitis caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory disease whose etiology remains obscure. We report a case of ON attributable to Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP). A 26-year-old man presented a sudden onset bilateral loss of visual acuity, without any history of pulmonary or ear-nose-throat infection. Diagnosis of optic neuritis was made on the basis of visual field loss, though optic disks and visual evoked potentials were normal. Color vision could not be assessed due to a congenital dyschromatopsia. The neurological examination was normal. On magnetic resonance imaging, there was no enhancement or enlargemen

A 22-year-old man presented with flaccid paraparesis and a thoracic sensory level in the context of a recent respiratory illness. Investigations established cerebrospinal pleocytosis with elevated protein, and subsequent serological testing confirmed raised antibody titres to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Nerve conduction studies established that H-reflexes were prolonged and somatosensory evoked responses were delayed from the lower limbs bilaterally. Although imaging of the spinal cord revealed no abnormality, clinical and neurophysiological findings were consistent with a myeloradiculopathy. The p

This report describes the occurrence of non-weightbearing lameness caused by Mycoplasma felis monoarthritis in two, immunocompetent, European, shorthair adult cats with a suspected history of trauma. Clinical signs recurred after conservative treatment. The joints were treated surgically and M felis was identified as the causative agent for the monoarthritis. Medication with 10 mg/kg doxycycline twice daily was initiated according to susceptibility testing. One cat underwent further joint flushing after two weeks; both the cats recovered completely after eight and nine weeks, respectively. The

In dependence on health of women the female genital tract is colonised by different microorganisms. Mycoplasma hominis was the first mycoplasma of human origin to be isolated. M. hominis, a common inhabitant of the vagina of healthy women, becomes pathogenic once it invades the internal genital organs. M. hominis is associated with bacterial vaginosis but it is still unclear whether the organism really contributes to a pathological process in which so many different bacteria are involved. The aim of this article is to summarize known information about these microorganisms.

INTRODUCTION: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of atypical pneumonia in children and young adults. The infection is generally mild and only a very few patients are admitted to hospital. However, extrapulmonary complications are well recognised--mostly as manifestations from the central nervous system (CNS).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe 21 patients with M. pneumoniae infection seen at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, from 1994 to 2000.
RESULTS: The patients had fever, headache, myalgia, and cough. Biochemically, they were characterised by leucocytosis, an increased level of C-reactive
