Acute Jejunal Diverticulitis Induced by a Malignant Gastrointestinal Neuroectodermal Tumor: A Case Report.

Small intestinal diverticula induced by malignant mesenchymal tumors are extremely rare clinical entities. We present the case of a 46-year-old female who reported a one-week history of worsening generalized abdominal pain accompanied by constipation. A computed tomography (CT) scan of her abdomen revealed an ulcerative mass at the proximal/midjejunal junction, suggestive of jejunal diverticulitis. She initially underwent diagnostic laparoscopy, which was converted to an open procedure for resection of the jejunal mass and side-to-side anastomosis. The final histopathological examination revea

Primary Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor of the Prostate on 18F-DCFPyL PET/CT.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a group of malignant tumors composed of small round cells. Peripheral PNET usually originates in the skeletal system. However, the presence of PNET lesion in prostate is extremely rare. We report a case of a 40-year-old man who presented with dysuria for more than 2 months. Pelvic MRI indicated prostatic malignant tumor, and F-DCFPyL PET/CT showed an isolated prostatic mass with high uptake of F-DCFPyL. Although F-DCFPyL is very specific for prostatic adenocarcinoma, a final diagnosis of peripheral PNET was made by pathology examination.

Epididymal melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: A rare cause of scrotal mass in an infant.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign neoplasm of neural crest origin more commonly seen in the craniofacial region. We report a case of MNTI of the epididymis in a 6-month-old male child with emphasis on the sonographic appearance which has not been previously described. In this case, the mass was inseparable from the testicle and therefore the differential diagnosis considered both extratesticular and intratesticular masses. MNTI should be added to the differential diagnosis of scrotal masses, particularly if they present in a child younger than 12 months of age

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor associated with paraneoplastic Cushing's syndrome: The rare case.

INTRODUCTION: Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) form a group of tumors defined by their appearance that are thought to develop from primitive (undifferentiated) nerve cells in the brain. They are rare tumors and their incidence is not well defined. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-month-old male presenting with typical Cushingoid appearance (moon face, central obesity, hirsutism and growth arrest) was admitted for evaluation of endocrine problems. Subsequent laboratory studies revealed markedly elevated adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) and cortisol levels, as well as a hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis

Rapidly progressing central-type primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the ovary: a case report.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) belong to a group of highly malignant tumors comprised of small round cells of neu- roectodermal origin. These tumors can be either of peripheral-type (Ewing family tumors/PNET) or central-type. A number of case re- ports have described PNET involving the gynecologic organs and the prognosis is generally poor. The authors describe the case of a 53-year-old woman with a rapidly progressing central-type PNET of the ovary.

Primary primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cervix: A report of two cases and review of the literature.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the cervix uteri is extremely rare. Two cases of PNET of the cervix are presented herein. Two female patients, aged 48 and 43 years, presented with irregular uterine bleeding over the course of 1 year, and increased urinary frequency for 1 month, respectively. On gynecological examination, a mass in the cervix was palpated and a biopsy performed. The findings of the initial biopsy revealed small-cell carcinoma in both patients. Following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy, radical hysterectomy was performed in both patients. One patie

Antiangiogenic therapy for primitive neuroectodermal tumor with thalidomide: A case report and review of literature.

RATIONALE: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a kind of small round cell tumor derived from primitive neuroectodermal tumor. PATIENT CONCERNS: PNET is a highly malignant tumor that is subordinated to Ewing sarcoma. It occurs predominantly in soft tissue and bone and rarely in the bronchi and lung. Traditional surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are used for the treatment of PNET, but are usually ineffective. DIAGNOSES: There was a rare case of a 17 year-old man diagnoses with primary pulmonary PNET. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated by the remedy treatment with th

Primary Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the renal pelvis: a case report.

Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) is a childhood malignancy, typically occurring in the bone and rarely in any other part of the body. We herein present a case of ES/PNET of the renal pelvis. A 37-year-old male patient presented with a chief complaint of pain in the left flank and gross hematuria. The tumor had caused moderate hydronephrosis, and ureteroscopic biopsy findings were highly suspicious of sarcoma. Subsequently, radical nephroureterectomy was performed. On the basis of the pathological and cytogenetic findings, a final diagnosis of primary ES/PNET of left rena

Cytokeratin-positive primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the prostate: case report and review of literature.

Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) of the prostate is extremely rare. Here, we report a case of ES/PNET of prostate in a 24-year-old man presenting with dysuria and pelvic discomfort. Computed tomography scan revealed a heterogeneous mass involving the prostate without evidence of distant metastases. Histologically, the tumor was composed of small round blue cells strongly and diffusely positive for CD99 and epithelial markers. Fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed rearrangement of the Ewing's sarcoma region on chromosome 22.

Intramedullary primitive neuroectodermal tumor presenting with rapidly-progressive cauda equina syndrome.

A 39-year-old male presented with gait disturbances with rapid deterioration for 2 weeks. Neurological examination found paraparesis, sensory loss in the L1-S5 dermatomes, and vesicorectal dysfunction. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a fusiform intramedullary tumor at T12-L1 levels with heterogeneous enhancement. The patient underwent microsurgical tumor resection. A myelotomy exposed a highly vascular tumor that was subtotally resected. Histological examination demonstrated hypercellular tumor accompanied by significant cell atypism and mitotic figures. Successful radiation therapy for supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor and epidermolysis bullosa simplex.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a heritable skin disorder characterized by skin fragility and blistering. While its most severe variant, dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the development of extracutaneous neoplasms in EBS is extremely rare. We report a novel case of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (sPNET) in a 7-year male with EBS. Experience of radiation therapy and its challenges in children with EBS has rarely been reported.

Orbital melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy successfully treated with chemotherapy and subtotal excision.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare condition that typically presents within the first 6 months of life. It rarely metastasizes but is locally aggressive. Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy has been reported under several other names including retinal anlage tumor and melanotic progonoma. Most commonly, melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy originates in the maxilla. Tumors in previously reported orbital cases have arisen from adjacent structures or from orbital bone. Recommended treatment of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy has consisted of complete exc

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor presenting in the retroperitoneum: a case report with immunohistochemical study.

It is now believed that malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) form a distinct tumor entity from other malignant small round cell tumors exhibiting neuroectodermal differentiation by morphologic, immunohistochemical or electron microscopic analyses. A 17-year-old Ethiopian boy was found to have a big upper extra osseous retroperitoneal tumor mass not associated with peripheral nerve that had infiltrated the body of the pancreas. Histologic sections from excised biopsy showed neoplastic cells with a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio and had an indistinct cytoplasm with numerou

Adult neuroblastoma of the retroperitoneum and abdomen: clinicopathologic distinction from primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Adult neuroblastoma (ANB) is a rare and poorly recognized entity among a histologically defined group of small, round-cell tumors arising in the retroperitoneum and abdomen. Eight cases of ANB were compared with seven cases of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in these locations to identify clinicopathologic features that could be used to distinguish between the two lesions. The ANB study group included four men and four women 22-74 years of age (mean 38 years). Five patients with ANB presented with inflammatory symptoms or elevated levels of catecholamines and their metabolites. Five of

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: Clinicopathologic Study of a Case, with Emphasis on the Chemotherapeutic Effects.

A case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) in a 6-months-old white female child is presented. The tumor was located in the left half of the superior maxillary bone and affected the maxillary sinus, inducing large facial asymmetry. The histologic aspects of the tumor were typical for the entity: two cell populations, one pigmented melanocyte-like cell, the other small neuroblastic-like cell. After adjuvant chemotherapeutic treatment with a strong reduction of the tumor, the melanocyte-like cell predominated, allowing a better result of the surgery and probably a better prognosi

Loss of INI1 protein expression defines a subgroup of aggressive central nervous system primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Pediatric embryonal brain tumors can be difficult to classify. Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumors (ATRT) contain rhabdoid cells, while primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are composed of "small round blue cells." Loss of INI1 is a common event in ATRT; therefore, we investigated if the loss of INI1 protein expression was also observed in central nervous system (CNS) PNET and pineoblastoma. A histological review of 42 CNS PNETs and six pineoblastomas was performed. INI1 expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Sequencing was performed on the mutational hotspots of INI1. Evaluation of intracranial cerebrospinal fluid cytology in staging pediatric medulloblastomas, supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors, and ependymomas.

OBJECT: The objective of this study was to determine the role of intracranial CSF examination in detecting true cases of early tumor dissemination. Cerebrospinal fluid dissemination is an ominous feature of pediatric brain tumors, occurring in as many as 30% of medulloblastomas, 25% of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs), and 5% of ependymomas at diagnosis. Detecting early dissemination is important for determining both treatment and prognosis. Dissemination can be detected by evaluating imaging of the full neuraxis and by examining CSF cytology. Neuraxis MR imaging and lum

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors in the central nervous system following cranial irradiation: a report of four cases.

BACKGROUND: Radiation induced intracranial neoplasms are uncommon but well described and include gliomas, meningiomas, and sarcomas. The development of primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) following prophylactic craniospinal irradiation has been infrequently reported previously. The authors present four additional cases of PNETs that developed after previous cranial irradiation. METHODS: Four patients who had previously been irradiated were determined to have PNETs of the central nervous system characterized by histopathologic and immunohistochemical features.
