Retinopathy of prematurity has reappeared in the neonatal nursery after largely disappearing 35 years ago. The major factor in its reemergence is the progressive improvement in neonatal care, resulting in salvage of infants who formerly would have been lost. Oxygen is now recognized to be but one of many interacting factors in the development of retinopathy of prematurity, with extreme immaturity being the primary factor. Methods of examination, classification and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity are discussed.

Osteopenia and rickets remain a problem for high-risk infants, especially preterm infants <1500 g birthweight (very low birth weight, VLBW). The primary cause of osteopenia in VLBW infants is a low intake of calcium and phosphorus compared to requirements for the rapidly growing skeleton. Human milk is a relatively low mineral containing substance and cannot meet the bone mineral needs of very low birth weight infants. Primary meningococcal conjunctivitis (PMC) is accepted as an uncommon condition. This report describes two recent cases of PMC in newborn infants in a hospital nursery. In both cases the organisms identified were non-groupable strains of N. meningiditis, considered to be of low pathogenic potential. Systemic candidiasis affects 1.6 to 4.5% of very low birth weight (</= 1,500 g) infants. A specimen archive of Candida strains from intensive care nurseries was created; it currently houses 98 isolates from 17 institutions. Eight isolates (8.2%) were misidentified at the referring institution. The MICs of fluconazole for seven isolates (7.1%, all non-C. albicans species, one misidentified initially) were >8 microg/ml.

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed the occurrence of prematurity, low birth weight, multiple gestations, frequency of stillbirths and maternity care-associated variables including hospital stay and hospital charges of women conceiving using assisted reproductive technology (ART) or artificial insemination (AI) compared with women with a history of infertility who conceived naturally, and all other naturally conceived pregnancies in California at non-federal hospitals between 2009 and 2011. At a single center, infants born after ART/AI were compared with infants provided care in the normal nursery.

The classic modes of heat loss affecting the newborn are conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation. The disproportionate ratio of surface area to body weight (SA/BW) of the premature infant is the basis of inefficient heat conservation, combined with a blunted metabolic response. Hypothermia leads to hypoxemia, acidosis, hypoglycemia, kernicterus and other lethal complications. Mistakes are common. Attention to minute details is required for stabilization of body temperature at the "neutral temperature zone" in delivery room, nursery and in transport.

Two cases of neonatal listeriosis occurred in a hospital within a two-week period. BACKGROUND: Pichia anomala is a rare cause of fungemia. From February to April, 1998, eight cases of fungemia occurred in the intensive care and high risk units of the Nursery.
