BACKGROUND: Several associations have been described between tree and plant pollens and certain foods. The objective of this study is to verify whether there is cross-reactivity between Platanus pollen and vegetable origin foods.
METHODS: We selected 56 patients allergic to vegetable foods and subjected them to cutaneous tests with aeroallergens and vegetable foods. A statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the association of Platanus pollen with foods and with other aeroallergens. Later, a specific IgE determination was performed as well as a RAST (radioallergosorbent) inhibition expe

In the last two decades of the 20th century, latex allergy has reached epidemic proportions. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that 3-25 % of health personnel is allergic to latex. The main risk groups are health workers, machine operators in latex factories, and children with spina bifida and urogenital anomalies. From the allergenic point of view, latex contains 240 peptides but approximately 50 are able to react to IgE. Latex elongation factor Hevdl is the relevant allergen in patients with spina bifida. Prohevein (hev B6) behaves as a major allergen, since it reacts to IgE in most of the

Food anaphylaxis is now the leading single cause of anaphylactic reactions treated in emergency departments in Westernized countries. In the US, it is estimated that there are 29,000 anaphylactic reactions to foods treated in emergency departments and 125-150 deaths each year. Peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish account for the vast majority of severe food anaphylactic reactions. Immunopathogenic mechanisms responsible for food anaphylaxis may differ somewhat from other forms of anaphylaxis, since elevation of serum tryptase is rarely seen following food anaphylactic reactions. Determining the single factor that triggered anaphylactic shock can be challenging. We present an interesting case of a 25-year-old female patient with recurrent anaphylactic reactions developing after eating various foods, particularly in presence of co-factors of allergic reactions. Symptoms occurred after consumption of various kinds of foods - peach, pancakes with cottage cheese and fruit, a meal from a Chinese restaurant - all eaten on other occasions without symptoms. During diagnosis, skin prick tests were negative for all tested allergen extracts (both inhalatory and food) from Allergo

Food allergies often develop after liver transplant, especially in young children. However, data are scarce on clinical characteristics and patient outcomes. When we evaluated our pediatric liver transplant patients over a 16-year period, food allergy incidence was 8% (19/236 patients). All patients with food allergies were <18 months old, with incidence in this age group of 19.2% (19/99). Two patients had a single food and 17 had multiple food allergies. Five patients showed only non-IgE-mediated food allergies. Eggs, milk, nuts, and wheat were the most common allergens. Presenting symptoms i

BACKGROUND: The sensitisation profile at molecular level in plant-food allergy is complex. Several allergens may be involved, with different potential for severe reactions. lipid transfer proteins (LTP) are considered the most relevant plant-food allergens in adults in Mediterranean countries, but less is known in children.
AIM: To describe the clinical pattern and sensitisation profile of children with plant-food allergy and LTP sensitisation from Northeast Spain.
METHODS: Children with history of immediate reaction to plant-food(s), positive skin-prick-test to the culprit plant-food(s) and

BACKGROUND: The incidence of IgE mediated food allergy (FA) is increasing in the west. Cow's milk (CM), hen's egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish are responsible for 90% of food allergy in the west; however, local dietary habits may result in specific allergies. Data on food allergies in South Asia is scarce. The present study aims to evaluate the foods that cause immediate type hypersensitivity in Sri Lanka, and to compare with Asia and the developed west.
METHODS: Records of patients referred to an Immunology clinic from 2010-January 2022 were reviewed. The diagnosis of f

BACKGROUND: Pediatric anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening systemic hypersensitivity reaction with age-related differences in triggers and clinical manifestations. Real-life data are important to improve recognition, risk assessment, and management. This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and clinical characteristics, triggers, management, and factors associated with moderate-to-severe anaphylaxis in children, with particular emphasis on age-related differences.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study was conducted at a pediatric allergy clinic between April 1, 2023, and

Peanut allergy is a major cause of food-induced severe anaphylactic reactions. To date, no medical care is available to prevent and treat peanut allergy and therefore hypoallergenic peanut varieties are of considerable health political and economic interest. Major allergens that induce IgE-responses in peanut-sensitive patients are Ara h 1, Ara h 2 and Ara h 3/4. In order to identify hypoallergenic peanuts, commercially locally available peanut varieties were screened for their allergen content. Ara h 1-deficient peanuts from Southeast Asia were identified by SDS-PAGE, immunoblotting, inhibiti

BACKGROUND: Cor a 1.04 has been identified as the major hazelnut allergen in 65 European patients with positive double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge results to hazelnut. Recently, the 11S globulin Cor a 9 was shown to be a pollen-independent hazelnut allergen in the United States, whereas preliminary data suggest the lipid transfer protein (LTP) as an important birch pollen-unrelated hazelnut allergen in Europe.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to recruit a group of European patients allergic to hazelnut without birch pollen allergy and to identify and clone the major food allergen(s) in this

BACKGROUND: Allergy to hazelnuts is a common example of birch pollen related food allergy. Symptoms upon ingestion are often confined to the mouth and throat, but severe systemic reactions have been described in some patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reduction in allergenicity by roasting of the nuts.
METHODS: Double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFC) with roasted hazelnuts (140 degrees C, 40 min) were performed in 17 birch pollen allergic patients with DBPCFC-confirmed food allergy to raw hazelnuts. The effect of roasting was further evaluated by skin prick t

Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly developing systemic hypersensitivity reaction that can be life-threatening if not promptly identified and treated. Its global incidence is on the rise, especially among children, though fatal outcomes remain uncommon. This review summarizes the current understanding of anaphylaxis, covering its epidemiology, triggers, acute management, and strategies for long-term prevention, with emphasis on cases caused by food, medications, and insect stings. The estimated lifetime prevalence of anaphylaxis ranges from 0.05% to 2%. In children, food is the primary trigger, w

BACKGROUND: Only a few studies have investigated the clinical role of food allergens, especially the relationship between sensitization to a given allergen and occurrence of adverse reactions when eating the relevant food item.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the clinical role of the allergens of Brazil nut by comparing the patterns of IgE binding in sera from 11 patients with anaphylaxis after eating Brazil nuts with those from 10 subjects with no symptoms to this food item. Both groups had specific IgE to Brazil nut.
METHODS: Allergens in the in-house extract of Brazil nut were identified

BACKGROUND: Peanuts and tree nuts are among the most common foods provoking severe allergic reactions including fatal anaphylaxis. However, little is known of the underlying genetic and immunological mechanisms involved.
OBJECTIVE: Based on findings in other allergic diseases, we have investigated whether specific human leucocyte antigens (HLA) are associated with nut allergy.
METHOD: Eighty-four patients presenting at the allergy clinic with symptoms of nut allergy were typed for the HLA Class I (HLA-A and B) and Class II (HLA-DRB1 and DQB1) loci by PCR using sequence-specific primers. Carr

A procedure for the native two-dimensional electrophoresis of peanut and hazelnut proteins is described. Proteins were solubilised after acetone treatment using a combination of 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS) and tetramethylene sulphone. These extracts were analysed by a combination of isoelectric focusing in the presence of lactose in immobilized pH gradients followed by charge shift electrophoresis. Immunoblot analysis, using sera from nut allergic patients, allowed the identification of a peanut and hazelnut allergen with identical isoelectric point and ap
