[Signs and symptoms, etiologies and clinical course of parosmia + in a series of 84 patients].

Eighty-four patients (72% females and 28% males) consulted between January 1995 and January 1998 for olfactory disorders with parosmia (erroneous olfactory response to stimuli). Parosmia occurred immediately after or during the course of acute rhinitis (n=70, 83%), head trauma (n=7, 9%), naso-sinus polyposis (n=5, 6%), chronic rhinitis (n=1) or frontal tumor (n=1). Quantitative and qualitative olfactory disorders were analyzed and products producing the parosmia were identified. The only cases where parosmia regressed concerned patients who developed parosmia after acute rhinitis (n=28 cases,

Synthesis and future challenges: the response of mosquitoes to host odours.

There is ample evidence that host seeking in mosquitoes is mediated by semiochemicals emanating from the host. Olfactory cues (kairomones) are detected through an intricate pathway, beginning with sensilla located on the antennae (odour) and palpi (CO2). Age and physiological state of the mosquito determine whether detection of kairomones results in a behavioural response. Only a few kairomones have been described so far. CO2 is a kairomone for most mosquito species and signifies the presence of a potential host because of its occurrence in the volatile emissions of all vertebrates. Other chem

Mechanism of copper nanoparticle toxicity in rainbow trout olfactory mucosa.

Chemosensory perception is crucial for fish reproduction and survival. Direct contact of olfactory neuroepithelium to the surrounding environment makes it vulnerable to contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs), which are increasingly used in commercial and domestic applications due their exceptional properties, can impair fish olfactory function. However, the molecular events underlying olfactory toxicity of CuNPs are largely unexplored. Our results suggested that CuNPs were bioavailable to olfactory mucosal cells. Using RNA-seq, we compared the effect of CuNPs and copp

Sparse input representations explain odor discrimination in complex, concentration-varying mixtures.

In natural environments, animals must detect behaviorally relevant odors despite variability in both odor mixture composition and stimulus intensity. Although mice can identify salient odors embedded in complex mixtures, how target concentration and background complexity jointly constrain discrimination remains unclear. We trained mice in a two-alternative forced choice task to identify target odors embedded in mixtures containing up to 16 background components. After performance stabilized, we systematically varied target odor concentration. Discrimination accuracy declined with decreasing ta

Tonic and stimulus-evoked nitric oxide production in the mouse olfactory bulb.

Nitric oxide (NO) has been long assumed to play a key role in mammalian olfaction. This was based largely on circumstantial evidence, i.e. prominent staining for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and cyclic guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP) or soluble guanylyl cyclase, an effector enzyme activated by NO, in local interneurons of the olfactory bulb. Here we employ innovative custom-fabricated NO micro-sensors to obtain the first direct, time-resolved measurements of NO signaling in the olfactory bulb. In 400 microm thick mouse olfactory bulb slices, we detected a steady average basal level

The intranasal trigeminal system.

Many odors activate the intranasal chemosensory trigeminal system where they produce cooling and other somatic sensations such as tingling, burning, or stinging. Specific trigeminal receptors are involved in the mediation of these sensations. Importantly, the trigeminal system also mediates sensitivity to airflow. The intranasal trigeminal and the olfactory system are closely connected. With regard to central nervous processing, it is most interesting that trigeminal stimuli can activate the piriform cortex, which is typically viewed as the primary olfactory cortex. This suggests that interact

Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation at Olfactory Bulb-Relevant Frequencies Modulates Human Olfactory Function.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a noninvasive technique that engages central neuromodulatory pathways and has been shown to modulate sensory processing across multiple modalities. Here, we investigated whether tVNS influences human olfactory perception. Sixty-seven healthy adults were assigned to one of two stimulation frequency groups, 25 Hz (beta) or 55 Hz (gamma), and each received 20 min of tVNS applied to the left cymba concha as well as a control condition with identical stimulation delivered to the left earlobe. Odor discrimination, odor intensity, and visual attention

Parallel Multi-Gene Panel Testing for Diagnosis of Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism/Kallmann Syndrome.

Kallmann syndrome (KS)/Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia or hyposmia due to the abnormal migration of olfactory and gonadotropin releasing hormone producing neurons. Multiple genes have been implicated in KS/IHH. Sequential testing of these genes utilising Sanger sequencing is time consuming and not cost effective. The introduction of parallel multigene panel sequencing of small gene panels for the identification of causative gene variants has been shown to be a robust tool in the clinical setting. Utilizing multiplex P

Beyond detoxification: xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes rewire mosquito sensory perception.

Mosquito olfaction regulates host-seeking, ecological adaptation, and vectorial capacity. Beyond the classical receptor-centric paradigm, we argue that xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes form a dynamic perireceptor layer that actively sculpts odor identity, signal intensity, and duration. This metabolism gain control mechanism may integrate olfactory sensitivity and behavioral plasticity within a unified sensory framework.

[Odor sensing system and olfactory display].

In this review, an odor sensing system and an olfactory display are introduced into people in pharmacy. An odor sensing system consists of an array of sensors with partially overlapping specificities and pattern recognition technique. One of examples of odor sensing systems is a halitosis sensor which quantifies the mixture composition of three volatile sulfide compounds. A halitosis sensor was realized using a preconcentrator to raise sensitivity and an electrochemical sensor array to suppress the influence of humidity. Partial least squares (PLS) method was used to quantify the mixture compo

Prevalence and Magnitude of Olfactory Dysfunction in Allergic Rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Although allergic rhinitis (AR) can negatively impact the ability to smell, the degree to which this occurs is not clear and prevalence estimates vary among studies. This study had 4 main objectives: (1) To estimate the prevalence and the degree of olfactory dysfunction in AR patients; (2) To compare olfactory perception between AR patients with different persistence and severity of symptoms and determine if olfactory testing may aid in differentiating among Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) groups; (3) To determine whether allergic reactions to different allergens

In this paper, we described technique of platelet rich plasma injection into the olfactory cleft in a 22-year-old female with 24-month post-COVID-19 anosmia. The technique starts with the blood extraction and the isolation of PRP through a 10-min centrifugation. The supernatant was injected in nasal regions after a local anesthesia through a 0° rigid optic. Several points of .2-.5 mL were performed in the nasal septum in regard of the head of the middle turbine and in the head of the middle turbine in both sides. The baseline threshold, discrimination, and identification scores were 1, 8, and

Generalization and extinction of learned fear alter primary sensory input to the brain.

Neuroplasticity in sensory systems permits the brain to refine sensory discrimination between threat-predictive and neutral stimuli, but dysfunctional sensory plasticity might underlie maladaptive fear generalization. Using an odor-cued fear conditioning paradigm designed to induce broad fear generalization in a mouse model, we found that odor-evoked synaptic output from olfactory nerve into the brain's olfactory bulb was greatly increased not only for the original threat-predictive odor but also for novel odors that evoked generalized fear, even under anesthesia. Extinction training in which

Hypomorphic CEP290/NPHP6 mutations result in anosmia caused by the selective loss of G proteins in cilia of olfactory sensory neurons.

Cilia regulate diverse functions such as motility, fluid balance, and sensory perception. The cilia of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) compartmentalize the signaling proteins necessary for odor detection; however, little is known regarding the mechanisms of protein sorting/entry into olfactory cilia. Nephrocystins are a family of ciliary proteins likely involved in cargo sorting during transport from the basal body to the ciliary axoneme. In humans, loss-of-function of the cilia-centrosomal protein CEP290/NPHP6 is associated with Joubert and Meckel syndromes, whereas hypomorphic mutations res

Decoding odor responses: universal patterns and individual signatures in psychophysiology using nonlinear models.

Olfactory perception is a complex process driven by the chemical properties of odorants and shaped by a multitude of individual factors. As a result, predicting how an individual perceives a given odor remains challenging. We aimed to address this complexity by integrating individual response patterns, odorant properties, and psychophysiological responses into a unified model. Therefore, we tested perceptual dimensions (valence, temperature, and intensity) of 6 perceptually diverse monomolecular odorants with continuous time-series data from psychophysiological measures (respiration, heart rat

Transport features predict if a molecule is odorous.

In studies of vision and audition, stimuli can be chosen to span the visible or audible spectrum; in olfaction, the axes and boundaries defining the analogous odorous space are unknown. As a result, the population of olfactory space is likewise unknown, and anecdotal estimates of 10,000 odorants have endured. The journey a molecule must take to reach olfactory receptors (ORs) and produce an odor percept suggests some chemical criteria for odorants: a molecule must 1) be volatile enough to enter the air phase, 2) be nonvolatile and hydrophilic enough to sorb into the mucous layer coating the ol

Agreeable smellers and sensitive neurotics--correlations among personality traits and sensory thresholds.

Correlations between personality traits and a wide range of sensory thresholds were examined. Participants (N = 124) completed a personality inventory (NEO-FFI) and underwent assessment of olfactory, trigeminal, tactile and gustatory detection thresholds, as well as examination of trigeminal and tactile pain thresholds. Significantly enhanced odor sensitivity in socially agreeable people, significantly enhanced trigeminal sensitivity in neurotic subjects, and a tendency for enhanced pain tolerance in highly conscientious participants was revealed. It is postulated that varied sensory processin

Regulation of olfactory-based sex behaviors in the silkworm by genes in the sex-determination cascade.

Insect courtship and mating depend on integration of olfactory, visual, and tactile cues. Compared to other insects, Bombyx mori, the domesticated silkworm, has relatively simple sexual behaviors as it cannot fly. Here by using CRISPR/Cas9 and electrophysiological techniques we found that courtship and mating behaviors are regulated in male silk moths by mutating genes in the sex determination cascade belonging to two conserved pathways. Loss of Bmdsx gene expression significantly reduced the peripheral perception of the major pheromone component bombykol by reducing expression of the product
