A systematic review of the microbial community in taiassuids: a One Health approach.

Collared and white-lipped peccaries are sympatric and are distributed in most of South America and in the humid tropical forests of Mexico and Central America. Historically, these species have been used as a source of protein by traditional and/or indigenous human communities, but currently they have been used for legal consumption in different countries. Thus, there has been greater interaction between these wild species and domestic animals and humans, enabling microbial interactions between different niches. The present study presents a systematic review of the literature on the microbial c

Prioritization of zoonoses for multisectoral, One Health collaboration in Somalia, 2023.

BACKGROUND: The human population of Somalia is vulnerable to zoonoses due to a high reliance on animal husbandry. This disease risk is exacerbated by relatively low income (poverty) and weak state capacity for health service delivery in the country as well as climate extremes and geopolitical instability in the region. To address this threat to public health efficiently and effectively, it is essential that all sectors have a common understanding of the priority zoonotic diseases of greatest concern to the country. METHODS: Representatives from human, animal (domestic and wildlife), agricultu

Elimination of Schistosomiasis Japonica in China: From the One Health Perspective.

Schistosomiasis japonica is caused by infection of Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum), which infected 12 million residents in the 1950s in China and was a heavy burden to public health and socioeconomic development (1). After more than seven decades of effort to control schistosomiasis, the prevalence of schistosomiasis has been reduced dramatically in China. Among the 450 endemic counties (including city and district-level jurisdictions), 74.89% (337/450), 21.87% (98/450), and 3.33% (15/450) have achieved the criteria of elimination, transmission interruption, and transmission control of sc

Clostridioides difficile as a Potential Pathogen of Importance to One Health: A Review.

Clostridioides difficile (basonym Clostridium) is a bacterial enteropathogen associated with cases of C. difficile infection that can result in pseudomembranous colitis, rapid fluid loss, and death. For decades following its isolation, C. difficile was thought to be a solely nosocomial pathogen, being isolated from individuals undergoing antimicrobial therapy and largely affecting elderly populations. More recently, C. difficile spores have been identified in the broader environment, including in food-producing animals, soil, and food matrices, in both ready-to-eat foods and meat products. Fur

One Health: An Effective and Ethical Approach to Leptospirosis Control in Australia.

The increasing concerns over emerging infectious diseases and potential pandemics led to the formation of One Health, a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to address the risks from human-animal-ecosystem interactions. This multi-sectoral approach is specifically important in Australia, a biodiverse country with unique flora, fauna, and many infectious diseases, including leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is a relatively rare but potentially fatal zoonosis, with an attributed mortality of around 60,000 deaths per year worldwide. In recent years, sporadic cases and alarming outbreaks of leptos

Surveillance of foodborne parasitic diseases in Europe in a One Health approach.

In 2012, WHO/FAO ranked 24 foodborne parasites (FBP) using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to provide risk assessors with a basis for prioritising control of highly ranked FBP on the global level. One conclusion was that ranking may differ substantially per region. In Europe, the same methodology was used to rank FBP of relevance for Europe. Of the 24 FBP, the top-five prioritised FBP were identified for Europe as Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella spiralis, E. granulosus, and Cryptosporidium spp., all of which are zoonotic. The objective of the present study wa

Didelphis spp. opossums and their parasites in the Americas: A One Health perspective.

Medium sized opossums (Didelphis spp.) are among the most fascinating mammals of the Americas, playing important ecological roles (e.g., dispersal of seeds and control of insect populations) in the environment they inhabit. Nevertheless, as synanthropic animals, they are well adapted to human dwellings, occupying shelters within the cities, peripheral areas, and rural settings. These marsupials can harbor numerous pathogens, which may affect people, pets, and livestock. Among those, some protozoa (e.g., Leishmania infantum, Trypanosoma cruzi, Toxoplasma gondii), helminths (e.g., Ancylostoma ca

Predators in northern Germany are reservoirs for parasites of One Health concern.

Urbanisation and invasion of wildlife into urban areas as well as human leisure activities create diverse wildlife-domestic animal-human interfaces, increasing the risk of (zoonotic) parasite spillover from sylvatic to domestic and synanthropic cycles. This study investigated the endo- and ectoparasite fauna, emphasising on parasites of One Health Concern, of the most common predators in northern Germany between November 2013 and January 2016. Eighty red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 18 stone martens (Martes foina) and nine raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were available for the study. Overall

Demystifying and Demonstrating the Value of a One Health Approach to Parasitological Challenges.

The One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and ecosystem health and encourages collaboration between diverse disciplines to address complex health problems. In this paper, 3 academics, with diverse training, experience and backgrounds who each work on different pathogenic parasites, will share their stories of tackling parasitic challenges by applying a One Health approach. The pathogenic parasites to be discussed include the helminth Taenia solium and protozoans Giardia, Theileria, Babesia, Neospora and Toxoplasma species. The 3 narratives focus on research an

The epidemiology of Brucellosis in Greece, 2007-2012: a 'One Health' approach.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis remains a disease that is very difficult to control and eradicate in Greece. Information exchange between the responsible authorities is crucial in order to support public health infrastructure in the sense of the 'One-Health' strategy model. METHODS: The data for 2007-2012 were retrieved from the notifiable diseases system and analysed statistically for correlations between human brucellosis cases and the disease in small ruminants. Disease-related risk factors were also estimated with parallel exploitation mapping software. RESULTS: In Greece the dominant strain for

[Study of nasal and tonsillar mucosal microbiocenoses as one of the health indices].

The qualitative and quantitative compositions of nasal and tonsillar mucosal biocenoses were studied in healthy individuals and patients with chronic tonsillitis as an ecological criterion for assessing the stability of biocenosis and human health. The qualitative composition of tonsillar mucosal biocenosis turned out to be steady-state both in health and disease. The human nasal mucosa showed itself as an indicator system. Staphylococcal strains with a high persistent potential and polyantibiotic resistance, which may cause an exacerbation of the inflammatory process on translocation to the t

Livestock-associated antimicrobial resistance and its implications for human health in India: A one health perspective.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a rapidly growing global public health problem. There is growing evidence that the emergence and dissemination of AMR genes and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are linked to antibiotic use in animals raised primarily for food. The use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry farming in India has led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and their impact on human health. Resistant bacteria can be transmitted via the food chain, direct contact with animals and the environment. Recent surveillance studies in India have shown that AMR exists in

Maternal Microbiome in Fetal Programming: A One Health Perspective on Translational Implications for Early-Life Health.

Pregnancy represents a critical eco-biological window during which maternal physiology integrates environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and interconnected microbial ecosystems to shape fetal development and long-term health. From a One Health perspective, defined here as the interconnection between maternal health, environmental determinants, and microbial ecosystems across generations, the maternal microbiome functions as a dynamic interface linking the external environment to the intrauterine milieu, translating ecological signals into immunological, metabolic, and neuroendocrine pathw

Public health challenge of hybridization in urogenital schistosomiasis: New insights and one health perspectives from Malawi.

The emergence of hybrid schistosomes resulting from interspecies mating between human and animal Schistosoma species is set to reshape the epidemiology of urogenital schistosomiasis in Malawi. Findings from the hybridization in urogenital schistosomiasis (HUGS) study in Malawi confirm the occurrence and circulation of S. haematobium × S. mattheei in humans, livestock and snails, from exemplar studies in Nsanje and Mangochi districts. Introgressed schistosomes complicate traditional diagnosis with atypical egg morphologies that defy standard microscopic identification, challenge current prevent
