Online information exchanges for parents of children with a rare health condition: key findings from an online support community.

BACKGROUND: The Internet provides new opportunities for parents of children with difficult illnesses and disabilities to find information and support. The Internet is particularly important for caregivers of children with special needs due to numerous health-related decisions they face. For at-risk populations, online support communities can become key settings and channels for health promotion and communication. OBJECTIVE: This study is an initial exploration of the information-seeking and information-provision processes present in an online support community, which is an area of opportunity

Drug screening and confirmation by GC-MS: comparison of EMIT II and Online KIMS against 10 drugs between US and England laboratories.

Drug screening through urinalysis is a widely accepted tool for rapid detection of potential drug use at a relatively low cost. It is, therefore, a potentially useful method for detecting and monitoring drug use in a variety of contexts such as the criminal justice system, pre-employment screening and a variety of treatment centers. This article explores the efficacy of two commercially available drug-screening assays: Online KIMS assay (Roche) and EMIT II assays. First, we evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of two immunoassays. A total of 738 urine samples were collected among adult arr

Alerts in mobile healthcare applications: requirements and pilot study.

Recent advances in mobile technologies have greatly extended traditional communication technologies to mobile devices. At the same time, healthcare environments are by nature "mobile" where doctors and nurses do not have fixed workspaces. Irregular and exceptional events are generated in daily hospital routines, such as operations rescheduling, laboratory/examination results, and adverse drug events. These events may create requests that should be delivered to the appropriate person at the appropriate time. Those requests that are classified as urgent are referred to as alerts. Efficient routi

An online brain-computer interface for detecting incongruity in augmented reality applications.

Objective.Augmented reality can provide digital information about physical entities presented within its real-world context. However, this information might disagree with the user's expectations due to factual errors in the data or cognitive biases. Such incongruity can impair user experience and undermine trust in the AR system. To address this issue, we propose detecting inconsistencies between physical objects and digital information through hybrid brain-computer interfaces.Approach.We conducted two complementary experiments. First, we implemented a strategy that integrates eye-tracking and

An online SPE LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of antibiotics in environmental water.

A fast and simple method for the analysis of 17 commonly used antibiotics in Finland in water samples was developed. The method combines online solid phase extraction using a reusable online trapping column combined with analytical separation on a C18 analytical column and detection by a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The method was fully validated for detection and quantification limits as well as linearity, repeatability, and matrix effects. The method gave an excellent linear response (r 2 > 0.99) and detection limits for all compounds (1-10 ng-1), except for tetracycline (20 ng l-1)

Invasive prenatal testing decisions in pregnancy after infertility.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed decisional conflict about invasive prenatal testing among women pregnant after infertility. METHODS: We surveyed 180 pregnant women with a history of infertility using a mixed methods cross-sectional design. Difficulty in deciding whether to have prenatal testing was measured using the Decisional Conflict Scale. RESULTS: A minority of women (31%) chose to have invasive prenatal testing. Most participants (72%) reported low decisional conflict (score < 25; mean = 22.1; standard deviation = 23.2; range: 0-100). Half (53%) of the participants said that infertility

Identifying respiratory events and artifacts using oscillatory impedance measurement in aPAP therapy.

Constant positive airway pressure (cPAP) is the predominant noninvasive therapy for the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The average pressure thereby applied can be reduced by online-identification of respiratory events. Oscillatory impedance measurement as an indicator for airway patency can identify central and obstructive apneas and hypopneas. Our goal was to reduce the sensors needed, to auto-calibrate the signals to each individual patient and to rule out patient induced artifacts.

A Pilot Study on Data-Driven Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation in Chronically Implanted Essential Tremor Patients.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential-tremor (ET). In adaptive DBS (aDBS) systems, online tuning of stimulation parameters as a function of neural signals may improve treatment efficacy and reduce side-effects. State-of-the-art aDBS systems use symptom surrogates derived from neural signals-so-called neural markers (NMs)-defined on the patient-group level, and control strategies assuming stationarity of symptoms and NMs. We aim at improving these aDBS systems with (1) a data-driven approach for identifying patient- and session-specifi

A flexible algorithm framework for closed-loop neuromodulation research systems.

Modulation of neural activity through electrical stimulation of tissue is an effective therapy for neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. Researchers are exploring improving therapy through adjustment of stimulation parameters based upon sensed data. This requires classifiers to extract features and estimate patient state. It also requires algorithms to appropriately map the state estimation to stimulation parameters. The latter, known as the control policy algorithm, is the focus of this work. Because the optimal control policy algorithms for the nervous syste

Fault diagnosis and tolerant strategy for MIMO system based on ν-gap metric.

The coupled relationship between inputs and outputs in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, as well as the multiplicative uncertainties caused by multiplicative faults, increases the complexity of fault diagnosis (FD) and fault-tolerant control (FTC). Research has indicated that coprime factor uncertainties are suitable for modeling multiplicative uncertainties. This paper presents an FD and FTC strategy for MIMO systems based on the ν-gap metric technique within the coprime factorization framework. In the offline phase, the ν-gap metric-based hierarchical clustering method is design

Neurophysiological validation of simultaneous intrinsic and reflexive joint impedance estimates.

BACKGROUND: People with brain or neural injuries, such as cerebral palsy or spinal cord injury, commonly have joint hyper-resistance. Diagnosis and treatment of joint hyper-resistance is challenging due to a mix of tonic and phasic contributions. The parallel-cascade (PC) system identification technique offers a potential solution to disentangle the intrinsic (tonic) and reflexive (phasic) contributions to joint impedance, i.e. resistance. However, a simultaneous neurophysiological validation of both intrinsic and reflexive joint impedances is lacking. This simultaneous validation is important

A Thematic Analysis of Online Discussion Boards for Brachial Plexus Injury.

PURPOSE: Patients with brachial plexus injury (BPI) and their family members contribute to Internet discussion groups dedicated to BPI. We hypothesized that a thematic analysis of posts from BPI Internet discussion groups would reveal common themes related to the BPI patient experience, providing topics for patient education and counseling. METHODS: Internet discussion boards were identified using the search term "brachial plexus injury support group" in Google, Bing, and Yahoo! search engines. Two discussion boards had substantially more posts than other Web sites and were chosen for analyse

Withdrawal-associated injury site pain (WISP): a descriptive case series of an opioid cessation phenomenon.

Withdrawal pain can be a barrier to opioid cessation. Yet, little is known about old injury site pain in this context. We conducted an exploratory mixed-methods descriptive case series using a web-based survey and in-person interviews with adults recruited from pain and addiction treatment and research settings. We included individuals who self-reported a past significant injury that was healed and pain-free before the initiation of opioids, which then became temporarily painful upon opioid cessation-a phenomenon we have named withdrawal-associated injury site pain (WISP). Screening identified

Digital asthma self-management interventions: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many people with asthma tolerate symptoms and lifestyle limitations unnecessarily by not utilizing proven therapies. Better support for self-management is known to improve asthma control, and increasingly the Internet and other digital media are being used to deliver that support. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to summarize current knowledge, evidenced through existing systematic reviews, of the effectiveness and implementation of digital self-management support for adults and children with asthma and to examine what features help or hinder the use of these programs. An overview and online registry of microvillus inclusion disease patients and their MYO5B mutations.

Microvillus inclusion disease (MVID) is one of the most severe congenital intestinal disorders and is characterized by neonatal secretory diarrhea and the inability to absorb nutrients from the intestinal lumen. MVID is associated with patient-, family-, and ancestry-unique mutations in the MYO5B gene, encoding the actin-based motor protein myosin Vb. Here, we review the MYO5B gene and all currently known MYO5B mutations and for the first time methodologically categorize these with regard to functional protein domains and recurrence in MYO7A associated with Usher syndrome and other myosins. Evaluation of on-line bradycardia boundary detectors from neonatal clinical data.

this paper aims at investigating different methods for the detection of the start and end of bradycardias in heart rate signal of premature babies. We present two methods based on a disturbance detector and on a decision tree that are compared to classical thresholding approaches. Decision tree obtained the best detection results (Se=78.2%, PP=68.7%) against the disturbance detector (Se=90.2%, PP=61.3%) and the best thresholding method (Se=92.5%, PP=46.5%). Moreover, the decision tree exhibits better performance for the boundaries estimation (median delay = 7-5 seconds) than the disturbance de

Improved method for the on-line metal chelate affinity chromatography-high-performance liquid chromatographic determination of tetracycline antibiotics in animal products.

An improved on-line metal chelate affinity chromatography-high-performance liquid chromatography (MCAC-HPLC) method for the determination of tetracycline antibiotics in animal tissues and egg has been developed. Extraction was carried out with ethyl acetate. The extract was then evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in methanol prior to on-line MCAC clean-up and HPLC-UV determination. Recoveries of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, demeclocycline and chlortetracycline in the range 42% to 101% were obtained from egg, poultry, fish and venison tissues spiked at 25 micrograms kg-1.
