Parental exposure to CdSe/ZnS QDs affects otolith development and locomotor behavior in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) offspring.

Quantum dots (QDs) influence otolith development and locomotor behavior, although the underlying mechanism remain unclear. This study evaluated the toxicity of CdSe/ZnS QDs on otolith development and locomotor behavior in the next generation (F1) using rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) as model organisms. The sexually mature parents of rare minnows (F0) were exposed to varying concentrations of CdSe/ZnS QDs (0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 nmol/L) for four days, after which embryos were collected through artificial insemination. The results indicated that exposure to varying concentrations of QDs inhi

Isotopes and otolith chemistry provide insight into the biogeochemical history of mercury in southern flounder across a salinity gradient.

Methylmercury (MeHg) continues to pose a significant global health risk to wildlife and humans through fish consumption. Despite numerous advancements in understanding the mercury (Hg) cycle, questions remain about MeHg sources that accumulate in fish, particularly across transitional coastal areas, where harvest is prominent and Hg sources are numerous. Here we used a unique combination of Hg and nutrient isotopes, and otolith chemistry to trace the biogeochemical history of Hg and identify Hg sources that accumulated in an economically important fish species across Mobile Bay, Alabama (USA).

Visually guided adjustments of body posture in the roll plane.

Body position relative to gravity is continuously updated to prevent falls. Therefore, the brain integrates input from the otoliths, truncal graviceptors, proprioception and vision. Without visual cues estimated direction of gravity mainly depends on otolith input and becomes more variable with increasing roll-tilt. Contrary, the discrimination threshold for object orientation shows little modulation with varying roll orientation of the visual stimulus. Providing earth-stationary visual cues, this retinal input may be sufficient to perform self-adjustment tasks successfully, with resulting var

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in a child: an infrequent complication following a fairground ride and post-cochlear implant surgery.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is an uncommon complication that can develop after cochlear implantation. This condition has been documented in adults as a complication of cochlear implant surgery. However, there is no reported literature on BPPV in children who have undergone cochlear implant surgery. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old girl underwent the insertion of a cochlear implant and developed BPPV as a result of visiting fairground rides approximately 2 years after surgery. INTERVENTION: We performed a right Epley's maneuver. She was advised to

Diversification of brain and sense organ morphology in Antarctic dragonfishes (Perciformes: Notothenioidei: Bathydraconidae).

In the subzero shelf waters of Antarctica, fishes of the perciform suborder Notothenioidei dominate the fish fauna and constitute an adaptive radiation and a species flock. The 16 species of dragonfishes of the family Bathydraconidae live from surface waters to nearly 3,000 m and have the greatest overall depth range among notothenioid families. We examined the anatomy and histology of the brain, retina, and cephalic lateral line system of nine bathydraconid species representing 8 of the 11 known genera. We evaluate these data against a cladogram identifying three clades in the family. We prov

[Otolith manifestations in Wallenberg syndrome].

Central vestibular pathways issuing from the otolith may be involved in Wallenberg syndrome, resulting in specific symptoms. These "otolith" symptoms are less well known than vestibular symptoms issuing from the canal. We report 15 patients with Wallenberg syndrome who had one or more clinical signs suggestive of otolith pathway involvement. Clinical examination looked for: Eleven patients presented ipsilesional skew deviation; ipsilesional tilt of subjective visual vertical was found in 8 patients; a room tilt illusion was described in 4 patients in either the frontal or the sagittal plane: 9

Ocular torsion as a test of the asymmetry hypothesis of space motion sickness.

Disconjugate eye torsion induced by 0 G and 1.8 G during parabolic flight was studied in nine former astronauts in 1990 and eight in 1991, four of whom were included in the previous experiment. The astronauts could be divided into two statistically significant groups on the basis of low and high scores of disconjugacy. When their histories of space motion sickness (SMS) were later revealed, all of the low scorers had not been sick on previous space flights; all the high scorers had had SMS. These data give support to the hypothesis that SMS in one-half or two-thirds of astronauts is due to an

Comparative Histopathologic Analysis of Inner Ear Damage in Meningitis: Otogenic Versus Meningogenic Routes.

OBJECTIVE: To distinguish the patterns of inner ear changes between meningogenic and otogenic routes in meningitis cases. Our hypothesis is that pinpointing distinct patterns linked to each route could aid in the development of diagnostic strategies and targeted therapies. METHODS: Temporal bones (TBs) from patients with a history of meningitis and histopathological evidence of labyrinthitis were divided into two groups (otogenic and meningogenic). Inner ear histopathological examination was performed to identify qualitative and semi-quantitative changes. This assessment encompassed inflammat

Expression of aquaporins in inner ear disease.

The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance and consists of a membranous labyrinth within a bony labyrinth. The balance structure is divided into the otolith organ that recognizes linear acceleration and the semicircular canal that is responsible for rotational movement. The cochlea is the hearing organ. The external and middle ear are covered with skin and mucosa, respectively, and the space is filled with air, whereas the inner ear is composed of endolymph and perilymph. The inner ear is a fluid-filled sensory organ composed of hair cells with cilia on the upper part of the cells th

Estimates of metabolic rate and major constituents of metabolic demand in fishes under field conditions: Methods, proxies, and new perspectives.

Metabolic costs are central to individual energy budgets, making estimates of metabolic rate vital to understanding how an organism interacts with its environment as well as the role of species in their ecosystem. Despite the ecological and commercial importance of fishes, there are currently no widely adopted means of measuring field metabolic rate in fishes. The lack of recognized methods is in part due to the logistical difficulties of measuring metabolic rates in free swimming fishes. However, further development and refinement of techniques applicable for field-based studies on free swimm

Differences in lateral line morphology between hatchery- and wild-origin steelhead.

Despite identification of multiple factors mediating salmon survival, significant disparities in survival-to-adulthood among hatchery- versus wild-origin juveniles persist. In the present report, we explore the hypothesis that hatchery-reared juveniles might exhibit morphological defects in vulnerable mechanosensory systems prior to release from the hatchery, potentiating reduced survival after release. Juvenile steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from two different hatcheries were compared to wild-origin juveniles on several morphological traits including lateral line structure, otolith compositi

A new device to quantify ocular counterroll using retinal afterimages.

BACKGROUND: The integrity of vertical semicircular canal and otolith function remains difficult to assess in the clinical setting, partly due to difficulties in recording ocular counterroll. Here, we quantify static ocular counterroll from head tilt using a new head-mounted device. METHODS: The device consists of an LED positioned 42 cm in front of one eye and a striated lens which produces a streak of light on the retina. The LED is illuminated at full intensity (80 cd) to generate a retinal afterimage. Subsequently, in darkness, the subject's head is tilted in the roll plane. Finally, the L

Mixing model systems: using zebrafish and mouse inner ear mutants and other organ systems to unravel the mystery of otoconial development.

Human vestibular dysfunction is an increasing clinical problem. Degeneration or displacement of otoconia is a significant etiology of age-related balance disorders and Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV). In addition, commonly used antibiotics, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics, can lead to disruption of otoconial structure and function. Despite such clinical significance, relatively little information has been compiled about the development and maintenance of otoconia in humans. Recent studies in model organisms and other mammalian organ systems have revealed some of the proteins and processes r
