In vitro and in vivo toxicity of urban and rural particulate matter from California.

Particulate matter (PM) varies in chemical composition and mass concentration based on location, source, and particle size. This study sought to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo toxicity of coarse (PM10-2.5) and fine (PM25) PM samples collected at 5 diverse sites within California. Coarse and fine PM samples were collected simultaneously at 2 rural and 3 urban sites within California during the summer. A human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell line (HPMEC-ST1.6R) was exposed to PM suspensions (50 μg/mL) and analyzed for reactive oxygen species (ROS) after 5 hours of treatment. In addit

Determinants of the proinflammatory action of ambient particulate matter in immortalized murine macrophages.

BACKGROUND: Proximity to traffic-related pollution has been associated with poor respiratory health in adults and children. OBJECTIVES: We wished to test the hypothesis that particulate matter (PM) from high-traffic sites would display an enhanced capacity to elicit inflammation. METHODS: We examined the inflammatory potential of coarse [2.5-10 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(2.5-10))] and fine [0.1-2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(0.1-2.5))] PM collected from nine sites throughout Europe with contrasting traffic contributions. We incubated murine monocytic-macrophagic RAW264.7 cells with P

Total particulate matter and wound healing: an in vivo study with histological insights.

OBJECTIVES: Wound healing in the skin is a multifarious orchestration of cellular processes and cigarette smoking may be a cause for delayed wound healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the plausible association between exposures of cigarette total particulate matter (TPM) and wound healing. METHODS: An in vivo wound healing model of mice was established for determination of assorted events of wound healing, dermal matrix regeneration, re-epithelialization, and neovascularization. A total of 72 adult mice, separated in eight groups, were exposed to TPM for 12 days. RESULTS: A high

Development of surface functionalized activated carbon fiber for control of NO and particulate matter.

This study investigates the development and potential application of activated carbon fibers (ACF) functionalized with ammonia for control of NO and particulate matter (PM) in diesel engine exhaust. A tubular reactor packed with ACF was used to experimentally study the oxidation of NO at room temperature. Tests were conducted at ACF functionalized with three aqueous ammonia concentrations (3, 5, 10 M), three basic reagents (ammonia, pyridine, amine) and three NO concentrations (100, 300, 500 ppm). After offline investigation, the ACF-packed tubular reactor was installed downstream of the engin

Impact of Particulate Matter on the Exacerbation of Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy: An Animal Experimental Study.

Particulate matter (PM) exposure is linked to chronic kidney disease; however, its effect on immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy (IgAN) remains unclear. We investigated whether PM exposure exacerbates IgAN in a mouse model. HIGA mice (IgAN model) and BALB/c controls were exposed to PM in a sealed chamber for 13 weeks. Lung Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) expression, serum aberrantly glycosylated IgA, A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL) levels, mesangial IgA deposition, and kidney pathology were assessed. RNA sequencing of splenic B cells was performed to evaluate immune-related gene expression.

Effects of fine particulate matter on the ocular surface: An in vitro and in vivo study.

Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (fine PM) pollution has been previously associated with ocular surface diseases. But, to the best of our knowledge, the in vivo long-term effects of fine PM on the ocular surface have not been investigated. We aimed to evaluate the effects of fine PM on cultured human corneal epithelial (HCE) cells and on the ocular surfaces of mice, with standard reference material of fine PM(SRM 2786). We applied fine PM suspension to the eyes of C57BL/6 mice for up to 6 months. In vivo examinations, including tear secretion, tear film break-up time (TBUT) and corn

The effects of fine and coarse particulate matter on lung function among the elderly.

Impaired lung function is associated with morbidity and mortality in the elderly. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the long-term effects of particulate matter (PM) on lung function among the elderly. This study evaluated the exposure-response relationship between ambient PM and different lung function indices among the elderly in Taiwan. A cross-sectional survey of individuals aged ≥65 years was conducted in Taiwan from October 2015 to September 2016. Those who attended the annual health examination for the elderly in five hospitals of varying background PM concentrations were enr

The effect of particulate matter size on cardiovascular health in Taipei Basin, Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Although the overall effect of particulate matter (PM) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been previously documented, the effect of different PM sizes (PM10, PM2.5-10 and PM2.5) has not been well studied. This study estimates the effect of different PM sizes on the incidence of CVD in Taipei, Taiwan. METHODS: We collected outpatients with CVD from 2006 to 2010 and data on the concentrations of air pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5-10, PM2.5, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. A Distributed Lag Non-linear Model (DLNM) was used to explore the effect of diffe

Exposure to airborne particulate matter is associated with methylation pattern in the asthma pathway.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbation and other respiratory symptoms are associated with exposure to air pollution. Since environment affects gene methylation, it is hypothesized that asthmatic responses to pollution are mediated through methylation. MATERIALS & METHODS: We study the possibility that airborne particulate matter affects gene methylation in the asthma pathway. We measured methylation array data in clinic visits of 141 subjects from the Normative Aging Study. Black carbon and sulfate measures from a central monitoring site were recorded and 30-day averages were calculated for each cli

Determination of inorganic beryllium species in the particulate matter of emissions and working areas.

A sequential extraction procedure for separating and determining Be(0), soluble Be(II) inorganic compounds, BeO and beryllium silicates in samples such as particulate matter of emissions and working areas, has been developed. The proposed procedure has been tested on synthetic samples prepared with the inorganic beryllium compounds, in the presence of atmospherical particulate matter sampled in a laboratory of the Department, previously checked for the absence of beryllium. The speciation was then repeated on a sample of fly ash deriving from a solid waste incinerator and on a reference materi

Association of particulate matter components with daily mortality and morbidity in urban populations.

Indices of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) have been reported to be associated with daily mortality and morbidity in a large number of recent time-series studies. However, the question remains as to which components of PM are responsible for the reported associations. Multiple PM components rarely are measured simultaneously. To investigate PM effects on mortality and morbidity, we used the multiple PM components measured in Windsor, Ontario, at a site only a few miles from downtown Detroit, Michigan. This study focused primarily on two study periods in which multiple PM components were me

The interaction of particulate matter and gaseous automobile exhaust in the city of Graz, Austria.

Aerosol particles collected at urban locations contain a significant portion of automobile exhaust emissions, especially lead and zinc. The most important emitted gases, carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and the nitrogen oxides (NOx) play an important role in the formation of photochemical smog in urban areas. Nitrate formation through heterogeneous reactions on dust particles may provide a removal mechanism for the nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere. As a consequence dust can reduce ozone formation rates by up to 25%. At 47 sites within the city of Graz, Austria dust particles were coll

Effects of ambient particulate matter and ozone on daily mortality in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The association between daily variations in all-cause mortality from 1983-1991 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and ambient air pollution was investigated. Twenty-four-hour average concentrations of total suspended particulates, Black Smoke, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide were available on a daily basis. Every other day, total iron content in total suspended particulates samples was available. Poisson regression analysis was used to study associations between air pollution and mortality; generalized additive models were used to adjust for confounders (e.g., seasonal trends, weather).

The increase in hay fever: pollen, particulate matter and SO2 in ambient air.

To investigate whether the rise in allergic disease is explicable on the basis of an increase in the concentrations of allergen and urban air pollutants to which the population has been exposed, we compared the concentrations of grass pollen, sulphur dioxide and black smoke to which two samples of children with previously measured prevalences of hay fever had been exposed, in Cardiff, South Glamorgan. In these studies there had been a 59% increase in the prevalence of hay fever among 12 year old school children between 1973 and 1988. Exposures to grass pollen of the two populations had been no

Particulate matter contamination in the corneal stroma of severe eye burns in humans.

Corneal buttons obtained from keratoplasty were examined by energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDXA) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This method enables to assay the mineral composition of minute parts of tissue samples identified in SEM images. Samples were cut from paraffin embedded corneae, deparaffinized in xylol, dried in aceton, critical-point desiccated, covered by evaporating with a thin layer of carbon and examined by SEM. In healthy human donor eyes, only some iron particles had been found. In the 22 patients samples high amounts of different particles were identifie

Fine particulate matter air pollution and longitudinal gray matter development changes during early adolescence: variation by neighborhood disadvantage level.

The adolescent brain is vulnerable to ambient air pollution. Importantly, community-level factors - such as neighborhood disadvantage - that co-occur with air pollution may further enhance this vulnerability and impact brain development. The current study investigated if neighborhood disadvantage moderates the association between residential fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution and adolescent brain development, including longitudinal changes in cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical/white matter volume from ages 9-13 years (n = 8321 participants from the ABCD Study®; 12,634 obs
