Reconsidering autonomy: Asian Americans' use of relational autonomy in organ donation decisions.

BACKGROUND: As cultural contexts have gained increasing relevance in medical decision-making, the current mainstream definition of autonomy is insufficient. A viable alternative framework, relational autonomy posits that agents' actions are influenced by and embedded in society and culture rather than occurring in isolation. To test the concept's applicability, we examine whether Asian Americans in the study's sample operationalize relational autonomy as a decisional approach in hypothetical scenarios about organ donation, a practice for which there is considerably lower enthusiasm compared to

Gendered Power Relations and Informed Consent: The I.V. v. Bolivia Case.

In a landmark decision handed down on November 30, 2016, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights analyzed the foundations of the right to informed consent. The court held Bolivia responsible for the forced sterilization of I.V., an immigrant woman from Peru, and recognized the importance of personal autonomy as a constitutive element of personality. This paper discusses the ethical foundations of the decision and explains the relevance of this judgment in furthering women's rights in Latin America.

Interrelation Between Increased BDNF Gene Methylation and High Sociotropy, a Personality Vulnerability Factor in Cognitive Model of Depression.

PURPOSE: It is suggested that increased methylation of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene is involved in the pathogenesis of depression, while sociotropy and autonomy are proposed as personality vulnerability factors in cognitive model of depression. We examined the interrelation between BDNF gene methylation and sociotropy or autonomy, with taking into account the previously reported deleterious effect of parental overprotection on sociotropy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants consisted of 90 healthy Japanese volunteers. Methylation levels of the BDNF gene in peripheral

Assessing the Relative Importance of Sociocontextual Determinants of Depression: A Random Forest Analysis of Young Korean Adults.

PURPOSE: This study examines the relative importance of various sociocontextual determinants of depression among young adults, including social, economic, residential, and demographic factors. Although previous research has identified a variety of contributors to depressive symptoms, their relative significance remains insufficiently explored. METHODS: Using data from the 2022 Youth Life Survey in South Korea (N = 13,038), this study uses Random Forest regression to assess the predictive power and impact magnitude of 30 sociocontextual factors. It uses the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score

The Loss of Autonomy in Eating Disorder Treatment: A Patient Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: In this text, the author's lived experiences as a youth with anorexia nervosa, anxiety, and depression are explored. Experiences with accessing North American health services, both in specialized eating disorder (ED) and disordered eating (DE) settings, as well as in healthcare more broadly are shared. AIM: This work seeks to shed light on a patient perspective in mental health and to draw attention to some of the ways that the current framings of EDs and DE within the biomedical system might perpetuate harm. METHODS: In this piece, a collection of the author's lived-experience

Risk, compensatory, and protective factors in problem gambling: The role of positive mental health characteristics.

There is a limited evidence base from which to draw conclusions about compensatory and protective factors for problem gambling. The aim of this study was to explore the potential for positive mental health characteristics (general coping, emotional support, spirituality, interpersonal skills, personal growth and autonomy, and global affect) to play a compensatory role and protective role in problem gambling in a convenience sample of 499 Australian university students. Hazardous alcohol use, past-year substance use, gambling-related cognitions (interpretive bias, illusion of control, predictiv

Ethics, design, and implementation criteria of digital assistive technologies for people with dementia from a multiple stakeholder perspective: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Dementia impairs the ability of people with dementia to be autonomous and independent. They need support from third parties, who should ideally respect their autonomy and independence as much as possible. Supporting people with dementia can be very burdensome for caregivers and numbers of patients increase while numbers of potential caregivers decline. Digital assistive technologies (DATs) that directly support patients or their caregivers may help bridging the increasing gap between need of support and available resources. DATs have the potential to preserve the autonomy and indep

When the Mind Gives Out Before the Body: How Psychological Traits Predict Sustained Performance Under Maximal Exertion.

INTRODUCTION: Physical readiness is a critical component of military effectiveness, yet the psychological factors that drive performance under physical duress are not fully understood. Although the link between psychology and exercise behavior is well-established, less is known about how stable personality traits and motivational orientations directly impact maximal physiological output. This study aimed to investigate the association between the "Big Five" personality traits, motivational needs from Self-Determination Theory, and objectively measured aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, and mus

Negotiating participation in conversations about care planning between people living with mild neurocognitive disorders and their healthcare proxies: a single case analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The time between diagnosis with a mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and definitive loss of decisional capacity presents a window of opportunity to participate in advance care planning (ACP). To implement early planning, we need to know how to promote healthy relationships between people with MND and their healthcare proxies. Our objective is to examine how people with MND and their proxies discuss engagement in ACP and how proxies orient toward the ability and right of the person with MND to provide answers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertake a conversation

Technology Matters: Using digital mental health tools for children and young people - clinical implications of neurorights.

The rapid expansion of digital mental health technologies is transforming child and adolescent mental health services through tools such as wearable devices, behavioural monitoring, predictive algorithms and digital interventions. While these innovations offer opportunities for earlier detection, personalised care and improved continuity of support, they also raise important ethical and developmental challenges. Current neurorights frameworks have emerged to protect mental privacy, autonomy, personal identity and agency in response to advances in neuroscience and neurotechnology. However, thes

Access to Postpartum Sterilization: ACOG Committee Opinion, Number 827.

Sterilization is one of the most effective and popular forms of contraception in the United States, relied upon by 18.6% of women aged 15-49 years using contraception. Nearly half of procedures are performed during the postpartum period, yet many women who desire postpartum sterilization do not actually undergo the procedure. Factors that may decrease the likelihood of a patient obtaining desired postpartum sterilization include patient-related factors, physician-related factors, lack of available operating rooms and anesthesia, federal consent requirements, and receiving care in some religiou

Belonging to self: Flint women meeting needs, securing safety and finding voice.

BACKGROUND: Belonging is a fundamental human need that influences health and well-being. Women's ability to belong to themselves is affected by structural disinvestment, environmental injustice, poverty and chronic precarity. Guided by the belongingness framework, this study explores solutions of women in the Flint area to increase "belonging to self," which encompasses basic needs, services, safety and autonomy. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we interviewed 100 women and community representatives. In-depth interviews (Fall 2017-Spring 2018) explored strengt

Emotion regulation styles and daily need-based experiences, energy and sleep in people living with HIV.

Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, this 14-day daily diary study investigated associations between need-based experiences, energy and sleep among 68 individuals living with HIV (mean age = 46.52, SD = 12.08; 81% male). Baseline emotion regulation (ER) styles were examined as antecedents or moderators. Multi-level models indicated daily need satisfaction to be related to increases in evening vitality and decreases in evening fatigue, while daily need frustration showed an opposite pattern and related to less sleep quality. In turn, lower energy in the evening and poor sleep quality in the mo

The synergy of immersion and basic psychological needs satisfaction: Exploring gamification's impact on student engagement and learning outcomes.

The integration of gamification into educational institutions has recently attracted considerable interest, owing to the digital era and emerging learning contexts. This study examined how immersion, an essential feature of games, affects various dimensions of education, including satisfaction of basic psychological needs (BPNS), academic engagement, perceived learning effectiveness, and perceived academic performance. Based on Self-determination Theory and the Theory of Gamified Learning, this study investigated how immersion influences autonomy, competence, and relatedness among learners, wh

Developing an autonomous-support culture in higher education for disabled students.

Inclusive practices have enhanced opportunities for many disabled people to engage in Higher Education; however, although support services that are central to success are increasing they are still intermittent and atomistic. Poor continuity of support is a systemic problem, particularly for students who engage in offsite placements where organisational structures do not adopt a student-centred approach. UK Universities require students to opt-into programmes of support that may necessitate rigorous paper work and labelling processes that may disempower students. Such models of support deter st

Physical Activity, Well-Being, and the Basic Psychological Needs: Adopting the SDT Model of Eudaimonia in a Post-Cardiac Rehabilitation Sample.

BACKGROUND: The theoretical conceptualisation of hedonic (HWB; pleasure) and eudaimonic (EWB; meaning) well-being has rarely been examined among cardiac rehabilitation (CR) graduates, including its relationship with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). First, this study examined the potential bidirectional relationship between MVPA and HWB/EWB. Second, this study tested the self-determination theory (SDT) model of eudaimonia where MVPA was set to predict the model's pathway between eudaimonic motives (seeking meaning), the basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedn
