Person-centred critical care for a person with learning disability and COVID-19: case study of positive risk taking.

People with learning disabilities are known to experience a wide range of health inequalities and have a lower life expectancy than the general population. During the COVID-19 pandemic this extended to higher mortality rates following infection with the novel coronavirus. This case study presents an example of a positive outcome for Jade, a 21-year-old woman with learning disabilities and autism who required a long period in intensive care following COVID-19 infection. It demonstrates the impact of effective multidisciplinary collaboration involving the acute hospital learning disability liais

Certified personal trainers' beliefs about providing personal training for adults with intellectual disability in a community fitness facility.

BACKGROUND: Numerous barriers limit the participation of adults with intellectual disability (ID) in community fitness facilities (CFFs). Lack of disability-related certification requirements for personal trainers (PTs) highlights the need to revise certification standards and develop training modules that prepare PTs to provide individualized training for individuals with ID. Therefore, insight from PTs is needed. OBJECTIVE: The Reasoned Action Approach was used to explore PTs' salient behavioral, normative, and control beliefs about providing personal training for a hypothetical adult with

Untreated psychiatric disability. A study of disabled persons with major psychiatric health impairment, having never received psychiatric treatment.

The presented investigation, from a county seemingly representative of the average for Norway, showed that at least 15% of male Disability Pensioners with a psychiatric primary diagnosis, become pensioned without having had any psychiatric treatment. The purpose of the investigation was to describe this group of untreated psychiatric disabled, both numerically and regarding social, personal and nosological factors. It was found that the absence of treatment was due to lack of opportunity, but to the pensioner's own attitude, a stubborn resistance to being defind as a psychiatric patient. This

[Efficacy of botulinum toxin type A against cervical dystonia and muscular hypertonia in persons with severe motor and intellectual disabilities with respiratory problems and/or dysphagia].

We administered intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in 11 persons with cervical dystonia (CD) and muscular hypertonia (MH). All patients had severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Furthermore, in 10 patients, SMID was accompanied by respiratory problems and/or dysphagia. Three patients received night nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation and 3 had undergone tracheotomy; 5 patients had upper respiratory problems. Because of these complications, BTX-A dose was gradually increased in those patients until the desired effect was obtained (mean last dose

(PwMS). Person-first and identity-first disability language: Informing client centred care.

BACKGROUND: Addressing individuals with a disability can entail the use of person-first (person with a disability) or identity-first language (disabled person). However, there has been debate about use of these terms, yet there is a lack of evidence to inform preference across people with a broad range of health conditions, demographics, or health related factors. METHODS: A 42-item survey measuring demographic and health condition factors, implicit and explicit preference for person-first and identity-first language use was open for completion by individuals with a self-reported health condi
