Naturalistic Use of Aspect Morphology in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children.

Grammatical morphology often links small acoustic forms to abstract semantic domains. Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children have reduced access to the acoustic signal and frequently have delayed acquisition of grammatical morphology (e.g., Tomblin, Harrison, Ambrose, Walker, Oleson & Moeller, 2015). This study investigated the naturalistic use of aspectual morphology in DHH children to determine if they organize this semantic domain as normal hearing (NH) children have been found to do. Thirty DHH children (M = 6;8) and 29 NH children (M = 5;11) acquiring English participated in a free-play

Psychological and somatic distress in relation to perceived hearing disability, hearing handicap, and hearing measurements.

Acquired hearing loss has frequently been reported to cause strains in everyday life, but few attempts have been reported where the affliction is related to the concept of stress. In this within-subjects investigation of 48 middle-aged to elderly hearing impaired patients, the relationships between hearing measurements, experienced disability and handicap (HMS), and psychological and somatic distress symptoms (SCL-90(R)) were analyzed. The variations in experienced hearing disability was found to correlate to the occurrence of a few, but more severe distress symptoms, and by loss of hearing fo

Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias in the Deaf Community: A Scoping Review.

Despite Alzheimer disease and related dementias/disorders (ADRD) being a substantial public health concern, the Deaf community remains underrepresented in ADRD research. We examined the extent and nature of existing literature on ADRD in the Deaf community. We conducted a scoping review following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, adhering to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. We searched 7 databases for peer-reviewed studies published in English, with no restrictions on publication date or study design. Inclusion studies addressed ADRD with

Do I belong?: implications of the ASLPI.

The American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) is a widely used assessment tool for academic and professional qualifications in ASL-related fields. In ASL education, most ASL educators are White and able-bodied: this study examines the ASLPI through the lenses of language ideologies, attitudes toward signed languages, and the notion of language boundaries as colonial constructs. Through thematic analysis of interviews with 10 deaf participants, we explored how ASLPI's design, interaction, and evaluation shaped their experiences. Participants reported discomfort and anxiety tied to ra

Ideologies toward CSL: SL perceptions in the 2025 Chinese Spring Festival Gala.

China has been working on the Sign Language (SL) Translation of TV programs. Based on Loh's (2025a) theory of language ideology, this paper uses the accessible retransmission of the 2025 China Media Group Spring Festival Gala as a case study to explore online perceptions of Chinese Sign Language (CSL) among deaf and hearing Chinese. It combines quantitative analysis of public online comments about the CSL interpretation during the Gala with qualitative analysis of online feedback from deaf Chinese. This study finds that although the novel SL Translation improved the public's impression of CSL

[Psychiatric treatment of prelingually deaf and hard-of-hearing people].

Prelingually deaf people are at risk of language deprivation. This may complicate psychiatric evaluation, and treatment in sign language is offered by a specialized national unit. The introduction of cochlear implants has markedly changed opportunities for communication, and the number of sign language users is decreasing. As discussed in this review, the new generations of prelingually deaf may not identify themselves as deaf, but some might have problems with language and communication, and there should still be a focus on this in psychiatric practice.

Contribution of Linguistic Skills to Word Reading in DHH Students.

This study aims to examine the relative contributions of phonological awareness (PA), orthographical awareness (OA), morphological awareness (MA) and rapid automatized naming (RAN) to word reading accuracy and fluency in Chinese deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students. Measures of PA, OA, MA, RAN, word reading accuracy, and word reading fluency were administered to 133 DHH and 127 hearing students in Grades 4-6. After controlling for chronological age, hierarchical regression analysis showed that PA made an independent contribution to word reading accuracy and fluency among the DHH students. T

Relationship Between Vocabulary Knowledge and Reading Comprehension in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students face great challenges in becoming proficient readers. Vocabulary knowledge is consistently considered to be an important factor affecting DHH students' reading ability. However, the mechanism that underlies the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension in DHH students remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the roles of word segmentation and reading fluency in the contribution of vocabulary knowledge to Chinese DHH students' reading comprehension. A battery of tasks were administered to 116 Chinese DHH stud

Counting Differently: Assessing Mathematics Achievement of Signing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Through a Unique Lens.

Limited studies exist that connect using signed language with mathematics performance of deaf and hard of hearing children. In the present study, the authors examined 257 participants and compared their results on the Northwest Evaluation Association: Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) to their results on an assessment of American Sign Language (ASL) skills. It was found that better ASL skills tended to result in better MAP performance. These results are moderated by factors such as age, gender, parental hearing status, and learning disability identification.

The two faces of presbyacusis: hearing impairment and psychosocial consequences.

A study of hearing disability and handicap was performed in a sample of elderly persons living in an urban area of Göteborg, Sweden. The aim was to describe the psychosocial consequences of presbyacusis. For this purpose, elderly persons with fairly uncontaminated presbyacusis were chosen. The study group consisted of 154 persons (59 men and 95 women) between the ages of 70 and 91 with a median age of 78 years. The methods used included a self-assessed hearing instrument, pure-tone audiometry, and registration of desired services regarding rehabilitative audiology. The questionnaire included 2

Autism, heparan sulfate and potential interventions.

Developmental disabilities are defined as disorders that result in the limitation of function due to impaired development of the nervous system; these disabilities can be present in the form of impairments in learning, language, behavior, or physical abilities. Examples of developmental disorders include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy (CP), hearing loss, blindness, intellectual disability, and learning disability. Of these disorders, ASD prevalence was 18.5 per 1000 children (1 in 54) aged 8 in 2016. Current literature suggests t

Designing for the Intersection of Aging and Disability: Application of the TechSAge Technology Intervention Model.

As people live longer with disabilities acquired early in life, the additive effects of aging create unique challenges at the intersection of aging and disability. Technology interventions can minimize barriers and create facilitators to support performance of activities integral to health and quality of life. The absence of a theoretical framework to guide such interventions, in either gerontology or rehabilitation, created gaps in the knowledge base required to meet the needs of these individuals. We proposed the TechSAge Technology Intervention Model (TechSAge-TIM) to support activity engag
