Knowledge on brain networks subserving vocalization in vocally healthy individuals under various task conditions is scarce but paramount to understand voice disorders. The aims of our study were to determine (1) the effect of social-evaluative stress on the central neural control of phonation underlying speech production; and (2) the neural signature, personality profile, and aerodynamic vocal function in relation to salivary cortisol responses. Thirteen vocally healthy females underwent an event-related sparse-sampling fMRI protocol consisting of voiced and whispered sentence productions with

Articulation disorder is associated with impaired control of respiration and speech organ movement. There are many cases of dysarthria and dysphonia in stroke patients. Dysphonia adversely affects communication and social activities, and it can interfere with everyday life. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between phonation abilities and the vowel quadrilateral in stroke patients. The subjects were stroke patients with pronunciation and phonation disorders. The resonance frequency was measured for the 4 corner vowels to measure the vowel space area (VSA) and formant centra

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a commonly developed complication after stroke and may lead to pneumonia. Several screening tests for dysphagia have been introduced, but no consensus has been reached regarding the test that best detects dysphagia or swallowing difficulties. Maximum phonation time (MPT) can measure laryngeal and pharyngeal function indirectly by providing a means of assessing vocal cord integrity. Because vocal cords play a role in sound production and also protect the airways, we considered MPT might be used to screen for penetration and aspiration into airways in stroke patients.

Negative damping and eigenmode synchronization as two different mechanisms of phonation onset are distinguished. Although both mechanisms lead to a favorable phase relationship between the flow pressure and the vocal fold motion as required for a net energy transfer into the vocal folds, the underlying mechanisms for this favorable phase relationship are different. The negative damping mechanism relies on glottal aerodynamics or acoustics to establish before onset and maintain after onset the favorable phase relationship, and therefore has minimum requirements on vocal fold geometry and biomec

An objective method for the diagnosis of functional dysphonias is presented. The mathematically motivated approach was evaluated on 71 female subjects with normal voice or functional dysphonia. Using digital high-speed recordings, the phonation onset process was recorded in real-time for 8-10 different sound pressure levels for each subject. From these recordings two parameters were mathematically estimated, reflecting the phonation onset dynamics. The growth of the vocal fold amplitudes during the phonation onset process was described by a parameter a for which its lower threshold value a(th)

This paper reports results of further experimentation on a previously developed physical model of the vocal-fold mucosa [Titze et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 3080-3084 (1995)]. The effects of vocal-fold thickness, epithelial membrane thickness, and prephonatory glottal geometry on phonation threshold pressure were studied. Phonation threshold pressures in the range of 0.13 to 0.34 kPa were observed for an 11-mm-thick vocal fold with a 70-micron-thick "epithelial" membrane for different "mucosal" fluid viscosities. Higher threshold pressure was always obtained for thinner vocal folds and thick

Pitch, as a sensation of the sound frequency, is a crucial attribute toward constructing a natural voice for communication. Producing intelligible sounds with normal pitches depend on substantive interdependencies among facial and neck muscles. Clarifying the interrelations between the pitches and the corresponding muscular activities would be helpful for evaluating the pitch-related phonating functions, which would play a significant role both in training pronunciation and in assessing dysphonia. In this study, the speech signals and the high-density surface electromyography (HD sEMG) signals

Sound generation during voiced speech remains an open research topic because the underlying process within the human larynx is hardly accessible for direct measurements. In the present study, harmonic sound generation during phonation was investigated with a model that replicates the fully coupled fluid-structure-acoustic interaction (FSAI). The FSAI was captured using a multi-modal approach by measuring the flow and acoustic source fields based on particle image velocimetry, as well as the surface velocity of the vocal folds based on laser vibrometry and high-speed imaging. Strong harmonic so

The aim of the present study was to examine whether the exercise intensity corresponding to the lactate threshold may be predicted by the Maximum Phonation Time task (MPT). Ten Greek amateur football players (age: 18.4 ± 1.0 years), performed a graded cycling exercise test to exhaustion in order to determine lactate threshold. A number of physiological variables were measured including perceived exertion, cardiopulmonary values and blood lactate. The MPT variable was correlated with all of the physiological variables. Also, a binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate whether

OBJECTIVE: Maximum phonation time (MPT) is a test to measure glottic efficiency for laryngeal pathology screening and treatment monitoring. The normative value of MPT for South East Asia population has yet to be reported. It is postulated that MPT may be affected by body mass index (BMI) despite the paucity of evidence. Therefore, this study was designed to establish the normative value of MPT for a South East Asia population and investigate its relation to BMI.

The diversity of vestibular fold (VeF) behavior during phonation, as well as the lack of insight regarding both the anatomy and muscle fiber composition hinder our understanding of their role during phonation. The concave shape of the free margin of VeF appears to be standard, but little is known regarding the variability of this shape. We, therefore, sought to determine the laryngoscopic features related to changes in the free margin of the VeFs during phonation in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Laryngeal images from 39 patients with unilateral paralysis associated with recurr

Analytical and computer simulation studies have shown that the acoustic impedance of the vocal tract as well as the viscoelastic properties of vocal fold tissues are critical for determining the dynamics and the energy transfer mechanism of vocal fold oscillation. In the present study, a linear, small-amplitude oscillation theory was revised by taking into account the propagation of a mucosal wave and the inertive reactance (inertance) of the supraglottal vocal tract as the major energy transfer mechanisms for flow-induced self-oscillation of the vocal fold. Specifically, analytical results pr

INTRODUCTION: Rhinophonia aperta may result from velopharyngeal insufficiency. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been discussed in the context of muscle strengthening. The aim of this study was to evaluate in healthy subjects whether NMES can change the velopharyngeal closure pattern during phonation and increase muscle strength.
METHOD: Eleven healthy adult volunteers (21-57 years) were included. Pressure profiles were measured by high resolution manometry (HRM): isolated sustained articulation of /a/ over 5 s (protocol 1), isolated NMES applied to soft palate above motor thres

Dysphagia after esophagectomy is a major risk factor for aspiration pneumonia, thus preoperative assessment of swallowing function is important. The maximum phonation time (MPT) is a simple indicator of phonatory function and also correlates with muscle strength associated with swallowing. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative MPT can predict postoperative aspiration pneumonia. The study included 409 consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between 2017 and 2021. Pneumonia detected by routine computed tomography on postoperative days 5-6 was defined a

This paper proposes a deep learning-based generalized empirical flow model (EFM) that can provide a fast and accurate prediction of the glottal flow during normal phonation. The approach is based on the assumption that the vibration of the vocal folds can be represented by a universal kinematics equation (UKE), which is used to generate a glottal shape library. For each shape in the library, the ground truth values of the flow rate and pressure distribution are obtained from the high-fidelity Navier-Stokes (N-S) solution. A fully connected deep neural network (DNN) is then trained to build the

In order to investigate the vibration pattern, especially the vibrational phase of tissue beneath the vocal fold mucosa, an imaging method called electroglottogram-triggered ultrasonography is proposed. The ultrasonic images of the vocal fold vibration are obtained in the coronal plane from five adult subjects during phonation. The velocity of the vocal fold tissue beneath the mucosal surface is obtained by using a motion estimation method. The results show that the vibration phase difference between tissues at different locations beneath the vocal fold mucosa results in a mechanical wave trav
